I read that, its a shame. Oh well Acer as just losing more and more sales.

I was looking into the CPU upgrade path for i5 420m users that might want to get the i7 620m. Seems to me that motherboard would be the socket type Micro-FCPGA Socket (mPGA479M / micro PGA) Unless they are using ball grid array forms (BGA) which means they would be making different motherboards for each spec as the BGA form is soldered into the motherboard.

I highly doubt that they would be making 3 types of motherboards for the timelineX range i3, i5 and i7's. Rather than just dropping in a new CPU into the mPGA socket.

However we need a service manual to fully check this out. Or when I open up my 3820TG for the keyboard backlit mod I will then check and confirm 100% its a socket not ball grid - soldered in place...

So I haven't brought a i7 620m, not till I check and then see if its really worth the boost in performance vs a i5 430m. I know the i5's 430m turbo boost is a joke....lol

Btw there is a 3820TG in stock from the guys I brought mine. 10% discounted to 773 euros since its a warranty return with a new screen fitted from teh Acer factory.

I guess that answers your (and my) questions. I could not see the pics, but I guess you have to register first like the last one. There seems to be a lot of modding going on in China on these Acers.

@Chong4oo, great find. You saved us all of lot of time. Clear that the CPU can be upgraded in the same socket.

Here’s the link for the fixture of the known issues: Post #205

    Acer Aspire 3820TG-434G64n (TimelineX) - 13-Zoll Timeline noch Xtremer - Seite 11 - Notebookjournal.de - Forum

I havent done anything to my notebook, since I’m still arguing with my retailer, I was reassured befor I placed my order that I’d get a 6 cell, got a 9 cell, now the retailer tells me only the i3’s would ahve 6 cell batteries, so it’s the 9 cell for all hungarians who’d like i5.

Wish I didn’t ran out of time, the 450M will be available in 1-1,5 months in Hungary, and maybe with a 6 cell though I’m starting to get used to the 9 cell, still just 1.9 kilos, but how light the 6 cell could be. Maybe I’ll just get an additional 6 cell.

Some built quality issues I don’t know I should even care about, the right side of the – maybe only decorative - material located between the two speakers sticks out, when I push it back, it comes up again in a minute or two.
The retailer tells me I should send it to Acer’s rpair center, located in Slovakia, free of charge of course because of the 3 years warranty- kidding me.

    Here’s the pic:

Maybe I’d be better off fixing it myself  .

Oh dear, this is so tempting. The price is great with the 10% discount, and a US keyboard costs about 25 euros with shipping, and I'm living in the EU right now so they probably will be able to ship here.

I guess before I pull the trigger, can anyone verify two things:

    1) Is it absolutely certain that the 3810 keyboard is identical to the 3820 keyboard, both in structure and function?

    2) For German models, the OS being German is not a big deal as a clean install will fix that. However, does the BIOS load in German? For example, if my OS fails to load for whatever reason and I see an error, will it be in German or English?

    Thanks in advance!

ps: Still no news on North America? I thought Acer was supposed to give a press release yesterday?

EDIT: Compared the 3810T keyboard pic on ebay with the Fn kepmap on the review of the 3820TG here, it seems that the 3810T is missing quite a few Fn keymaps such as to toggle the touchpad and the wifi. :(

If I had to make any kind of a guess I`d say ACER are in no hurry to sell in the north american market for the following reasons:
    1. poor economic conditions in retail 2.low value of american dollar 3.low margins in retail sales ,especially in consumer electronics . Until ACER have sold a load of their newest products in more profitable markets north america will have to wait.

Hate to break it to you but American Dollar is not really at a low value anymore. It has been on a massive tear lately, index is 86+ as we speak at 2008 levels, meanwhile Euro is down to 1.22 USD form 1.50 USD...

    Hi All,

I just wanted to say thanks to all for all of the information (and laughs) I experienced on this thread. Unfortunately, ACER have done little to provide information on a release date for the TimelineX machines, in the US, so I have decided to go with the new HP Envy 14 instead.

I really wanted to get my hands on the 4820TG but became frustrated with the lack of information, out of Acer, on a US release date and also what versions of the machine they would initially release (in terms of CPU and GPU).

Good luck to those who have the new machines and good luck to those who still await their laptop....hopefully Acer provides the higher i5 and i7 chips for all of their machines soon.

I do believe Acer sell good machines and offer good value for money, I also hope they get it right with the new TimelineX's and give the Sony Z, HP Envy and MBP's of this world a run for their money (I do believe competition is a very healthy thing).

Keep up the good, informative and light-hearted posts all!

    Cheers!

Hendrickson, where did you order your 3810T backlit keyboard? Checking ebay.co.uk gives me only regular 3810 keyboards.

I pulled the trigger and ordered the 3820tg from the German site you linked. Fingers crossed for a good experience.

Three Core-I Travelmates appear on the US Acer site: the 8172, 8472 and 8572. As far as I can tell, none of them have dedicated graphics. So, there's really nothing coming to the US market.

I completely forgot about that ... your right ... I think there is one TG model in the mix, everything else will have integrated graphics if I remember correctly. I also remember that almost none of them were coming to the US, they were largely going to Canada. There is a list by model number earlier in this thread. I guess I didn't think about them because his question was specifically about the US.

I stand corrected ... the 3820TG looks interesting. It will have an English/French keyboard. I found it on the Synnex website. I guess you canadians can call and find out dates and availability. At least for canadians. :D

Our canadian friends must be feeling better ... even if the Stanley Cup will be residing in the US this year.

I edited my post above. Still not much here from Acer - ya think?

Thanks - that is finally some good news. Can anybody check these model numbers and see if its a HD 5650? Given the ability to upgrade the CPU, I would consider any 3820TG with the HD 5650. Anybody know how to read them? This one will have BT 3.0. OMG, its the 9 cell battery!!!! :D I would even buy one with a 9 cell for now and get a 6, keeping the 9 as backup.

Thanks again insider. Any way of figuring out who will be getting any of these or do we just need to wait until somebody releases it?

Thanks for the link. Yay its a Socket ;) Nice, I'm 99% certain the 3820T/TG will be the same due to all the different CPU specs.

I think I'm up to it as I'm not new to opening up my laptops. I have swapped CPU's and arctic silvered my P6831Fx here and my Dell M170 before so I think I'm up to the job.

Getting power to the keyboard on the other hand might be a bit more of a challenge for me. I'm not so good with a solder iron.... :(

Looking at the photos (Tip to Bronsky, don't translate the page in order to view the images) The bluetooth card is doing to be located at the front, so I will have too pretty much strip the machine down to get to it. And then tap into the power to run the backlit keyboard. At least then I have an on and off switch via bluetooth which I never use anyway!

I'm not the only one now ;)

I hope you got the UPS delivery, it seems DHL isn't the DHL express option. But road freight and as slow as a mail service. At least my 3820TG was picked up so its on its way down to me. I called customer services and the nice lady explained to me it will take up to 10 working days - Rats!! I guess I was fooled by the DHL logo.. I knew I should have opted for the UPS delivery option.

Oh the keyboard is from ebay.com (USA) Here's the link: Acer Aspire 3810T 3410T 4810T 4410T Keyboard US Backlit - eBay (item 390168759387 end time May-21-10 18:28:28 PDT)

Are you going to also try and power the backlights on the keyboard as I plan?

LOL been writing all day, I'm tired. My vision is going cause of this 11.6" display. :D

I'm fairly convinved that I will be going for the Envy 14 if nothing happens with the Acers in the next few weeks. That will give me the GPU I need to do my work and some portability when I need to do presentations. If I got the 3820TG I was going to consider giving my 1410T to my daughter. I guess I'll have to keep it as a portable unit if I go for the Envy.

Such is life. I don't understand how Acer could fail to send us a single model of the 3820TG/HD5650.

    Bronsky

There are some models showing up on UK sites but they only have the 5470. Would it be possible to swap the 5470 for a 5650? Was just trying to think of any alternatives to the keyboard swap.

I'm afraid not. I've just seen the laptop in photos baring all its insides and its not a pretty sight. One shared fan and shared heat pipe to cool a i5 / i7 and 5650 just isn't a wise design choice. Thats asking for trouble. It seems a few bios updates on the thermal poloices from Acer might help...But i doubt it.

Its why I opted for the 3820 TG with its dual fans and heat pipes. Plus the lower weight and smaller size ++

Get an external monitor ;) Nice 27" or something.

Unfortunately not, its embedded into the motherboard. No MXM cards here.

I do work for Acer, but not in the sales/marketing/distribution areas so unfortunately I have limited information. I wouldn't rule out the possibility of a 3820TG in the US yet, but there is always the chance one won't be.

I have to be honest ... I don't think it's in the cards. I only have another month to replace my laptop. They are getting nervous at work because I have a large project and presentation scheduled for the month of July and I keep saying no to the Dells they've ordered for the rest of the office (we have a Dell account at work). I've been holding out for the Acer due to the portability. At least I have the Envy 14 as a backup. If something happens in the meantime and Acer decides that we US fans deserve a break, I will be glad to plop my dollars down.

Those model numbers don't indicate the GPU...

This is frustrating. Asus and Acer have both crapped the bed big time. Effff them. I refuse to buy an HP after being embittered by my dv2000. What other options do I have lol.

Haha not bad for a backup plan eh?! I'd personally choose this as well if I have not gotten the timelinex.

It's because of the specs mate! A whooping 13 seconds superPI with i7 will totally own that envy! =) peace!

Yea I know. It's just that I'm torn between getting a nice laptop like the 3820TG with the 5650, or getting a less-fancy laptop and building a desktop instead.

Right now I'm looking at spending ~$700 on a decent laptop + ~$700 on desktop parts, or spending >~$1200 on a 'better' laptop. I think the former option makes more sense, as this laptop waiting game is insane.

I have until the end of June / first week of July :(.

If the 3820TG w/ 5650HD isn't out by then, I will probably "settle" for the Envy 14.

Now if I could option a bluray rom into the Envy 14.... that's a whole other ballgame. (I'm in the market for a blu ray player)

    Envy 14 w/ Bluray > 3820TG > Envy 14 w/ Dvdrw

i guess it takes about 300 pages of forum posts to "give up the ghost" so to speak :)

i also caved in and ordered a y460 with 2 year "bumper to bumper" warranty from lenovo.com for a G $ on sunday (my gf bought it for me, and i found some coupons to save about 150 bux)

there were 3 factors that made we give up waiting for the timelinex ( i WAS waiting on B's spec- il diavolo 3820- 5650/i-7/160gig ssd)

    1) sick of waiting and lack of Release information from Acer ( you guys have been super helpfull- i frickin heart this forum, but Acer slipped here imho, and did not provide enough credible information about the Timing of the Global release and config options available to secure my hard earned dollars)

    2) i found out it IS possible to replace dvd drive with a 2nd harddrive in the y460. this is SUPER helpful since my primary will be a "small" ssd around 160 gig...

    3) better build quality, (keyboard) and warranty ( i bought bumper to bumper 2 year warranty for 120 bux). this one is up for debate but i encourage you to try and type on laptops instead of making a decision based on catch-words like "backlit" or "chiclet". i personally think lenovo has the gold standard of keyboards in notebooks and like the "old school" feel.

i will check back here since i am still interested in the laptop for other folks i know, i am just ALOT less interested now then a week ago :) .

I did consider the envy 14, but i am not a big fan of HP quality or keyboards OR SUPPORT so not alot of reason for me to wait for them. battery slices/higher rez/more cpu options sound great on paper but for my needs it is not a fit (from my gaming perspective 5650 with ????*900 rez is a mismatch--not enough video card to really drive games at that rez, i am better of with a 768 display--at least i can game on the road for 2 hours at Native Rez and not deal with scaling which is fugly if u ask me).

good luck if you are committed to the timelinex! i waited for 200+ pages as well and can relate. i wish Acer releases this soon cause i know how hard the waiting is, especially if you if you need a tool now! if i see any prices out there for usa 3820tg i will post back here for sure!

EDIT: extra special thanks to Jayayess1190 for giving this thread life in the first place. Extra special thanks and "survivor" medal goes to Bronsky --you are a champ with heart, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Your level of commitment makes mandella look like a county-jail graduate !
    cheers

Since we're in love-fest mode for the moment, I'll say +1 to this. Though I bowed out of the 3820TG wait a few weeks ago in favor of the Vaio Z, I return to this thread every day, as it's drawn some of NBR's best in my opinion. It's been one of the most fun threads in the forum. And Bronsky, I think we'll all be heartbroken if you have to settle for the Envy. :( Your "patiently waiting" was the backbone of this thread. :)

I'm happy to hear about the 3820TG.

On a side note, it's unfortunate but the Canadiens played a bad series and gave up an easy win. Oh well. With that said, I'd just like to send out an early congratulations to the Blackhawks on being the new Stanley Cup Champions. ;)

now we just need a european owner to bet their 3820tg on the cup series and we are back in it!

so i guess the 3820tg went out like the sharks run at the cup..which went from #1 hope to yet another embarassing disappointment for me.

Nah, I was thinking about it, but as you say, last I used a solder was 12 years ago, and I dont have one around to begin with, really. Just getting a regular US keyboard. I ordered via DHL, I can wait 2 weeks, at least I know it's coming, and as long as it does gets here. Fingers crossed for a good experience. I've put in so much time into lurking in this thread it isn't even funny anymore. Kind of a relief to get it over with.
