I hear you on that one. At least I've ordered mine and happy with my choice. Its a good 10 days away still but it gives me time to maybe even order some more bits for it to upgrade it. And maybe the keyboard might arrive around the same time as the notebook. I'm seriously thinking about a i7 620m now. They are pretty good chips.

Nice deal indeed, shame I'm in the EU and already got my 3820TG on the way. P.S Whats better the 330m or the 5650. Is it true Sony underclocks the 330m GT due to heat?

If you have it apart, the CPU install looks very feasable. I also like the idea of being able to install new thermal paste. I think it would help control the heat a bit.

These Sonys were sold out in minutes. :D

I emailed "the acer guy" regarding the difference between the 3810 and 3820 keyboards. His reply:

"I can confirm that they are different. However, as I don't have these models in front of me I canot tell you in what way.

    Hope this helps,

    Michael"

Hopefully the differences are not structural... The pictures of the backlit keyboard mods, was that done on a 3820 or another 3810? :S

HD5650 is faster, and even more so since Sony underclocks the 330GT, if it's due to heat I don't know - but it's easy to suspect.

3dmark06 wise the sony GT330 scores around 5500 points (1280 x 1024) and the Acer HD5650 scores around 6700 points. And the difference would be even more noticeable in most games since the HD5xxxx mobile series generally performs better in games than in 3dmark vs the current nvidia mobile cards.

The silver lining on all this is that there are at least 2 HD5650 TimelineX models coming to the US/Canada. Probably be in the hands of retailers before July. The 5820TG will have good specs. I7-620M | HD5650. I don't know much about the 15.6" market but I would guess that the I7 and 5650 are less competitive in that market because of the number of notebooks with more powerful QM series CPUs and more powerful GPUs (HD5850 GDDR5). The same specs in a 13.3" is really what makes the 3820TG such a great device. The Canadians get an I3 version of the 4820TG with the HD5650 (might be a good I7-620M upgrade candidate). They will aslo get an HD5450 version of the 3820TG. I would assume that both will have an Eng/Fr keyboard.

I've done some research based on photos of the 3810T keybaord and the differences seem to be this:

3810T keyboard is glossy keys whereas the 3820T/TG is matte material. (However the 3810 keyboard I brought is non glossy plastic keys)

Comparing the size of the keyboard, flex cable plug and keys etc they are seem to me to be identical, hence why I brought it. Some differences in the FN + F keys for wireless and bluetooth etc. I don't see this as a major issue.

The backlight keyboard mod was done on a 3810T, but the idea is the same. Solder the backlight power flex cable to the bluetooth cards power or another 5v source.

The bluetooth seems a good option as we would be able to turn the power to the backlights on and off with the FN + Bluetooth key.

Another idea I have is to tap into a USB ports power and then maybe hope that if disabling that 1 USB port via device manager. It would also disable the power to the backlit keyboard.

I also suspect that the HD5650 is going to be a dream to OC. ATI really got this 5xxx series right (at least every one I've encountered). I have been particularly impressed with the Asus 1GB 5870 in my desktop. At first, the thing holding me back from buying the Sony was its limited CTO configurations and its price. The performance difference of the GT330M vs. the HD5650 is the tilting factor leaning toward the Envy 14 as my back up plan.

All that being said, a Sony Z for $1,150 is a hard deal to pass up. The Sony has everything else going for it. The 330M would do the trick for my uses and I'm sure there are Sony owners already OC'ing the crap out of that 330M. Any penalty associated with the weaker card would be made up for in decreased loading times of the Raid 0 SSD. The only other downside would be that the 330M would guarantee a shortened replacement period for the notebook. The demands of our software seem to increase at far tighter intervals all the time (of maybe it just seems that way). But a 40% off deal would more than compensate for that.

    Bronsky

@MMMW hang in there. :D BTW, next time you talk to the Acer Guy let him know that we want I7-620M/HD5650s in the US within the next 30 days. :)

    Hello folks,

Is there any word on the i7 version of the 3820/4820/5820 Aspire Timeline X stuff?

I've seen the i5 versions in the shops but was hoping to hold out for an i7.

Singapore is the only place we know that has the I7 so far. Germany is starting to allow preorders on the I7 4820TG soon. We should have the 5820TG version of the I7 by late June in the US.

Where are you seeing the I5 TimelineX in shops?

Bronsky: So the latest news is that North America will get 5650 models by July, but none of them 3820 models? I'm glad I didn't wait then.

Hendrickson: Thanks for sharing your research, I guess I can breathe easier now. My biggest worry was always functionality and whether or not it fits! It being glossy/matte, backlit or not is of secondary importance.

Here's the link I got mine from, I got the last one in stock I think: Acer Aspire 3820TG-434G64n W7HP64 - Notebooks - computeruniverse.net

Its a German model so with German QWERTZ keyboard. I brought a backlit US keyboard for it off ebay. Not sure if mine has the HSDPA Modem, but apparently the sim slot is there behind where the battery is. I don't know where to get the 9 cell battery. I prefer the 6 cell as its streamlined and lighter.

Thanks for signing the petition, I am too. More than that, it might be helpful if those reading this thread would post on the Acer Guy site or the Acer site on Facebook. Maybe it won't matter ... but then again. I will be posting on those sites asking for the I7-620M/5650 3820TG & 4820TG to be sent to the US. If enough of us raise the same request, somebody in marketing might wake up.

It might be a mistake though. I bought the returned-good model from them, they had trouble with payment and requested that I replace my order using a different payment method, I said okay and the order was cancelled. However I was unable to replace the order (the return good list doesn't show it), and lo and behold the brand new list is in stock again. Complicated eh.

Hmm so in the end you didn't get one from them? I paid via paypal. But I got a feeling they held it a few days before shipping just to be sure it wasn't a charge back scam or something.

To be honest i don't blame then. That crap happening to me on ebay. I sold a mobile phone and shipped it the next day. A day later paypal informs me the buyers account was used unauthorised....So they reservse the payment advise me not to send anything...To late for me. I lost out. No phone, no money....

I7-620M 3820TG still only available at the Poly Institute ... hard to understand what Acer is thinking. Not the path I would take to Market domination. :)

Press conference in China anounced a new device for Acer, a 7" Ipad, just what the world needs is another tablet clone. And with an ugly keyboard attached at the base.

Acer CEO teases 7-inch Android tablet, promises it for Q4 2010 -- Engadget

Nice job Gianfranco, way to market your company's products. The funny part is that Acer is promising a release in Q4 and even the author laughed at that. Looks like we're still SOL here in the states for TimelineXs.

@Robliv - you will be a celebrety in the US with your 3820TG. :D

I think may be, ACER is waiting for the new ULVs for its TimelineX to increase battery life. Otherwise no point in letting HP and others to get the market.

No, it's not that because they have already been released around the world. Many readers of this forum have already reported their experience with the computer many of us in the U.S. and Canada want. Acer is just doing a terrible job getting this to the U.S. market and it is inexplicable why they are ignoring their largest potential market. All they need to do is release a press report saying that the TimelineX models will be released on such-and-such a date. That would not be that difficult. The models are being advertized on their website. Why not give us release dates, models, prices, etc.? Get in the game Acer, or you will lose big time!

Thats the last thing the timelineX needs is a 1.07 Ghz i5-520UM CPU  ...That would completely change the notebook for the worse. Only good thing would be increased battery life. 2 hours more maybe?

My i5 430M performs well, the 450M made me curious though, which actually makes sense, because since my laptop was shipped with a small built issue (not to mention 9 cell instead of 6), I have to decide till next Thursday if I wanted to withdraw from the sale and therefore demand a full refund, then order it again, or wait like 1,5 months till the 450M modells probably arriwe (I say probably because Germany will have these modells around 3rd of June, so it'd take at least an additional month till those modells get to Hungary.)

Do You think I should ship it back and wait for the 450M? Would it make a difference? Not games wise but WinRar, or Video conversion?
I use MS Office as well, but the 430M handles it with a breeze, but would the 450M be "that" faster unpacking Rars, or converting videos?

On a side note it looks like it its possible to overclock the i5 430m's. As someone here on this chart posted a clockspeed over 3 Ghz on a i5 430m on the HM55 chipset so that means it can be overclocked ;) Wonder how?

    Smaller overclock here:

    Still a nice boost.

    Well it's been fun.

I've been posting in this thread all the way back from page 5.

    Goodbye Acer 3820TG..

    Hello HP Envy 14.

I'm also going to purchase this to complement and complete the total package:
