hi,
you can install windows 7 from a usb flash drive.
you will need an empty usb flash drive (min 4GB) and this tool to copy your ISO image to your flash drive. http://images2.store.microsoft.com/prod/clustera/framework/w7udt/1.0/en-us/Windows7-USB-DVD-tool.exe
when you have done that just change the boot device to usb from the bios.![]()

There is a review of the TimelineX 4820T up on PC PRO today!
Basically saying it's a fast machine, but awful build quality
Acer Aspire TimelineX 4820T review | Laptops | Reviews | PC Pro -
well theres alternative lenovo u460
with 8 cell battery is 1.9 kg +14 inch has a i5 450m proc its selling in singapore -
Incredible performance by the GPU.
"We had to push our Crysis benchmark all the way up to 1,600 x 1,200 resolution and High quality settings before the frame rate dipped to an unplayable level. For such a lightweight laptop, it's immensely impressive."
That was achieved with no OC'ing. That, and the full powered CPU are the main reasons somebody will buy one of these.
The flex in the lid, the crappy keyboard and the average display are known conditions. They can be minimized. The bouncy keyboard probably only needs a little bit of double sided tape.
The display benefits from updated bios/drivers and and can be improved a bit by calibration. If the lid flex bothers you, get a hard case for the 4820TG.
In all, a fairly good review with no surprises. I must say, I don't find the 4820TG anywhere near as attractive as the 3820TG. It is the CPU/GPU power, packed into such a small, portable, efficient package that is the dominant selling feature fo the 3820 (efficient includes dual cooling system). It is really the only one of the Acer TimelineX series that I am interested in and, IMO, a cut above the 4830TG in design. It makes a better platform for those components.

No I7-620M version of the 3820TG for sale.
At least there is an I5-520M. Okay - what is a "Kanchiong Spider"?

@ Bronsky and anybody worrying about the KEYBOARD.
I had the chance to go to a b&m shop today where they had the timelinex. Obviously low specs, but regarding the keyboard I have to say that there is an incredible (really) difference between the 4820 and the 3820.
The 4820 keyboard really flexes as some have said. But the 3820's is much more sturdy, MUCH more. That is a bit of an engineering wonder.
Who's going for the 3820 shouldn't worry too much about the keyboard, I pressed quite hard and ape-like (maybe a Neanderthalensis could have done better, that depends on your origins), I don't think there'll be need of any double sided tape. Also, the whole lappy is more sturdy (i don't know if it's a consequence of that or a cause).
Only thing, the keys seemed to me to be a bit small. But that goes without saying in a 13".
Regarding the screen, really, it's alright. Not a MPB obviously, but the vieweing angles are much better than those appeared in reviews, and the colours are alright. Yes, the contrast is a bit low though. Again, it may also depend on where the notebook is produced.
Oh and yes, the lid flexes. Personally, I don't care the slightest. It doesn't move when you take the laptop from the body with one hand anyway, and the flexing i guess can guarantee a longer hinges life (which, by the way, are exactly the same as the old series). The plastic of the body is sturdy as well.
Oh, and the 5820 seemed to be thicker? Is that possible? Also, it didn't impress me at all. -
Howdy,
Long time lurker, first time poster. I also have been eagerly awating the US release of the TimelineX and just noticed some listed today. (Not sure if someone already saw this). The 3820T (Acer LX.PTC02.087 Acer 13.3 I3/4GB/320/HDMI Output ) and a few others are listed at buy.com and others.
Search Google.com/shopping for "timelinex" and they will come up.
Holding out for the 3820TG, but it is good to see some initial models coming state-side.

It's a local lingo meaning too anxious, probably talking about someone who can't wait to buy something

I have been thinking long and hard about the Envy and the Acer. Here is my problem. I have a serious presentation to put together this July and wanted to have the Acer to work on it. The actual presentation will be in August and will include photos, satelite images and certain modeling/simulations. I am estimating that it will take a couple of weeks to put together the presentation and data simulations. I had scheduled this project to begin right after the July 4th holiday.
My concern about the Acer's timing related to the need to have a notebook in the office that could handle the editing and production work as well as running the models in a reasonable amount of time. Although our software is optimized for a quad I7, I think a high performance dual core I7, although slower, will still perform adequately. That is why i want an I7-620M or an I5-540M at the least. I though about bringing my I7-930/ATI5870 desktop from home to work to do all of the editing and production work, hoping that the Acer became available before August so that it could be used for the presentation. The problem was that, if the Acer was not available, I would be screwed in August. Given the discounts that we will likely see when the Envy 14 is released, I did not want to pass that up and had decided to order it on the 27th, if the Acer was nowhere to be found.
In talking to our office's computer tech, I found out that we can lease a mobile workstation with an I7QM/FX 1800 Quadro 1GB GDDR3 for a month very inexpensively. It would do the work I need done, but, lacks sufficient battery power to be a decent presentation device. I may have figured out a solution.
I have been using my Acer 1410T for the past 3 months. Clearly the Acer does not have the capability to be a mobile presentation notebook. After using the Acer at a site excavation and referencing diagrams and work plans, I came to the conclusion that it would be nice to replace the Acer with a tablet. On the same day that HP is releasing the Envy 14, it is also releasing a new tablet, the refreshed TM2T. It is a 12", I5-430UM, 540UM or I7-640UM, CPU and HD5450 GPU switchable graphics and a high quality Convertible Tablet pen/touch display. This tablet has similar specs to the new Asus UL30JT (HD5450 ~ 310M) but is smaller and may have a better CPU. Most importantly, the HDV2 in the HD5450 makes it a perfect GPU for my presentations. Gaming capability is almost non-existent but I don't typically game on my work laptops anyway. I am seriously considering replacing my Acer 1410T with the HP TM2T.
If I do that, my company can lease the workstation for July and I can take my time replacing my main notebook.
That means I can continue to wait for the Acer.
Not only that, I will have converted my field notebook to a tablet which is far more functional for my uses when I am in the field. Now, I'm waiting to see what specs HP includes in the TM2T CTO. Ideally, I am looking for an I5-540UM or I7-640UM. Life gets more interesting all the time.

I've been following the 3820TG for a bit now, but I'm curious-If Acer released one with the new ULV chips (if they ever come out), would the 5650 run circles around the, say, 520UM?
Thanks. -
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
Comparing the graphics card to a processor? And the ULV's are out, the Acer 3872, Alienware M11X, Sony Vaio Y, and a Fujitsu are all available for sale or pre-order with them. -
I meant could the 520um bottleneck the 5650. Guess I worded it a little weird.
M11X has a ship date of 7/6, looking at the others.
EDIT: Vaio Y isn't on the Sony website, 3872 gave no results (did you mean something else?) and I couldn't find anything about a Fujitsu.
I just heard Intel was delaying the chips because some Acer exec's nixed the chips in new notebooks because Calpella was so much more successful. -
So I talked to a buddy of mine, who spends his summers in Taiwan, and the rest of the year half a mile away from me in Los Angeles. I asked him if he could find the 3820TG with i5-540m or i7-620m. He said he found nothing from all the site's he's been looking at, and that they only offered it in a i5-430m. He also informed me that the only places he was able to find i7-620m were in China or Singapore. Pretty reliable info imo, cuz he is in Taiwan and knows the stores well, and frequents a bunch of Chinese-language sites/forums. So if Taiwan doesnt have a i7-620m yet, wonder what the chances are of us getting it here in the States? We're damned again for being Americans. My parents should've raised me in Vietnam lol.

Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
In the Y Owners thread in the Sony section there are reviews from site of a new Pentium U5400 powered Y, plus a Sony website in some country has it for pre-order. The 8172 (not 3872, my bad) is for sale here with the i3-330UM, the M11x has i5/i7 options, and the Lenovo U160 is for sale with the i5-520UM and i7-640UM on Lenovo.com.
Intel never delayed the ulv Arrandale's, that was just a rumor that spread around. -
I hope that HP has bought a whole bunch of those I7-640UMs. Would like to see them go into the TM2T.

"Acer @Travis: Hi, thanks for asking! The Timeline X will be available in the US and Canada in late June.
Acer is absolutely committed to the North American market and our product selection, retail availability and market share has grown dramatically here in recent years. As you already may know, Acer has a 100% indirect business model. Based on this, we tie most of our significant U.S. consumer product launches to the major U.S. retail cycles. The top U.S. retailers will roll out their new PC product offerings for the back-to-school buying season in late-June, and Timeline X will be part of that. You can expect to see a number of models with 13.3-, 14- and 15.6-inch displays and various configuration options. If Timeline X is the right product for you, we hope you’ll continue to be patient with us. And if you can’t wait, there are some fantastic deals available now on our current Acer Timeline series. "

so 18 days to go stil no pre order or ads or deatailed specs?
-
There is one 3820T being sold somewhere on preorder for June 15 delivery. You probably will not see any anouncement or preorders, they will just appear on Newegg, JR, Walmart, etc.
Bronsky
-
What do you think the price will be? What's the usual price for Timeline's/Travelmates in the US? $800? $1000? $1500?
VERY INTERESTEd! -
This is the site which has the 3820T available for pre-order:
NCIX.com - Buy Acer Aspire AS3820T-5851 Intel I3-330 4GB 320GB 13.3IN Screen Intel HD Windows 7 Prem Notebook - LX.PTC02.093 In Canada.
Nothing special, though. Well, until the TG model.
EDIT: Another one too:
http://www.microinformatique.ca/Page/prix2/prixdetailplus_e.asp?SKU=44830 -
hopefully this wont be a bust like the asus ul30jt
-
Unlike the JT, the 3820TG has already been in the hands of owners in the rest of the world who have shown what a wonderful laptop it is.
-
The JT has been sold in some areas around the world, and some owners have been reporting on it, but it has not been sold in nearly as many countries as the 3820TG. I still think it's possible that the Asus UL30JT will be released in the U.S. at about the same time as the Acer.
-
Why does everyone keep comparing the 3820tg with de ul30jt?
The ASUS has a ULV processor. Doen't that put them in a completly different category in terms of performance?
At least for me, the ULV turns me off in a second.
Correct me if i'm wrong, but even the i7-640UM is way slower than the i5-430M (the one available here in europe, for now). -
If anybody is running out of time to wait for the TimelineX models and needs something with similar specs, I would look that the Lenovo outlet. There is a Y460 I5-520M/HD5650 for sale for $712.

How much does it weight? I hate lenovo, they never list the weight.
-
around 2.2kg if not mistaken
-
The reason we compare them is because they are a similar form factor. Same dimensions; almost the same weight. Many of us are looking for a slim, lightweight laptop with decent performance. Unless you plan on doing a lot of hard core gaming, the performance difference between these two is not that great.
So, yes they are different in terms of performance for some tasks, but for many of us they are very similar when it comes to how we would use them. -
thanks a2bucks
How much of a difference in terms of performance would the best ULV have compared to the i5-430M?
I am not a hardcore gamer, so pure processor power is not that important. But i do "need" to know i have the horsepower under the hood IF i wanted
-
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
The fastest ulv is the Core i7-680UM at 1.46GHz (Turbo Boost up to 2.53GHz on a single core). It is much slower than a Core i5-430M, but for non gaming everyday tasks it is fine. -
You can now order a 3810T in Canada... it has the i3 and no dedicated graphics.
Shark Systems - LX.PTC02.093 - Acer AS3820T I3330/4G/320G/13/W7HP
&
AS3820T-5851 W7HP64B ENG/FR Intel Core i3-330UM(3M L3 cache,1.2G,DDR3 800M,18W)4 - LX.PTC02.093 LX.PTC02.093
Also, no 4820 eithier, but I have seen 2 5820T's and 1 5820TG avail for preorder... there all i3, but no idea on graphics as the site hasnt posted specs yet. -
Pricing & Upgrades
Download the matrix... and you'll see the lone 3820 and 3 5820s specs, along with a June 15 release for Canada. Dont know if something like that is avail for the States... -
That looks very promising (/sarcasm). Looks like we won't be getting i5-430m's and ATI 5650's in North America.
-
I don't think, that there will be an i7 in the tm2. It is a more cheap unit. I had to return THREE of them. And i will never get an HP again. This is why envy 14 is dead for me. If you think that an acer notebook has a bad screen: Look at a tm2 display. Worst viewing angles ever. And this is a real problem for a tablet. Maybe there will be a better display in the refresh.
-
If that is really the only 3820 that is coming to Canada (and the evidence looks to be that way at the moment with the lone pre-order option and sales matrix), then its time to look elsewhere.
-
This whole waiting game has been utterly macabre.
-
does canada follow US models vice versa?
by the way acer ethos launched in malaysia and sg
5943g with ati 5850+i7 740qm at usd 1450 i really like the build but i wish it was 17 inch
8943g also launched in sg
and does ati mobility 5850 800sp gddr3 beats 5770 400sp gddr5 (theoritical) -
^the same model number of 5943G on singapore comes with i7 720QM and HD5650 only though...
-
Pretty sure no as the 5850 DDR3 only gets 500 3dmark06 points more than HD5730 DDR3. There are no 5770 released, but I'm pretty sure the GDDR5 would be able to give it at least +2000 3dmark06 points compared to HD5730.
-
well that sucks i really want something of 5770/5750 gddr5 caliber
seeing the canadian pricelist it shows 3820t has i3 330um rather than i3 330m thats disappointing and if acer really really decides ULVs in the timelinex it will be disastrous
hey guys what about Intel Core i7 640LM does it perform like a i3 430m at least it will keep the laptop really cool any place where its selling? in ebay i didnt see -
There is no UM going into a 3820T that i know of. That price list must have confused a 3820T with an 1830T (which has the UM processor).
The big problem that I see with the LM processors in any of these units, is that, like the UM processors, they are soldered in place. I have been looking in detail at the processors and their sockets lately and it looks like only the full powered units are upgradable.
@hendrickson - I'm fairly sure we're dealing with a PGA 988 socket at this point. There is a single reference to a 989 that is still a bit confusing but I think it's wrong. -
I bought the 4820TG a few days ago and soon encountered this problem. Every time I boot the laptop and it's plugged in, the screen will go black and the system will become unresponsive to everything within a minute of logging in to Windows. I suspect it has something to do with the switchable graphics since it works just fine when unplugged (even when switching graphics), but I haven't been able to find a solution.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I tried searching this topic for any similar problems but without success.
edit:
Now it happens when unplugged as well, seems like some drivers are messed up. -
so where has this thing been released? I'm going to China in a few weeks and I might pick one up there if it's available.
-
well if lm procs can be bought separately i think it will be great for gaming
not that good for multitasking i hope when sandy bridge comes i hope to i7 620m caliber like procs in 25w tdp like p8xxx during core 2 gen
as for canadian pricelists i am not seeing any 3820tg even with 5470
does us and ca follow same specs? -
Blargh, big dissappointment.
The Travelmate 8372 only comes with a Geforce 310M videocard, and has not even a hdmi-port or any other good extra ports.
That's a big let down. -
There is a single TG model going to Canada that we know of. We don't know the GPU.
