I'm planning on getting either both of these computers, Aspire AS5538-1096 or Aspire Timeline 5810-4784. Everything else is understandable except the part of the processor. The Aspire as5538 comes with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-core Processor L310 1.2GHz, 1 MB L2 cache. While the Aspire Timeline comes with an Intel Pentium Processor DU4199 1.3GHz, 2MB L2 cache. I mean, are intel making pentiums with dual core? Can it beat the Athlon 64 x2 1.2 dual core? Even if it costs more with the Aspire Timeline?

Here are links I found with some detailed information about these two products:

    Aspire A5538-1096

    Aspire Timeline 5810-4784

My main concern is, dual core, portability, and solid design. In better words, which is the best one?

The Aspire Timeline series is designed for long battery life through the use of Intel's CULV (Consumer Ultra Low Voltage) platform. It'd far outpace the battery life of a regular Aspire, I'd imagine.
The Intel Pentium Dual-Core SU4100 in the Timeline is basically the same as the current Core 2 Duos (not an older Pentium), but sips battery power instead of guzzling it. And since the Core 2 Duos can beat Athlon X2s clock-for-clock, it should be faster than the L310, just not by too much.

Get the Timeline if you want long battery life, or the Aspire if you want to do some gaming as well (the Radeon HD 3200 in the 5538 is better than the GMA 4500MHD in the Timeline).

Also, the price difference is probably because the one with AMD is an open box item and the Intel one is brand new.

The timeline will also be more portable/lighter than any other regular 15-inch notebook. Design is a personal taste thing. I have the 13-inch timeline and am loving it so far.

If you want, I can move this over to the What Notebook Should I Buy? forum when you're ready.

Have anyone used the 5538? Opinions?

The difference is minimal, 2 mm in width and 1.1 mm in height :D :

    5538: 380 (W) x 259 (D) x 26.4/30.8 (H) mm (14.82 x 10.1 x 1.02/1.2 inches)
    2.4 kg ( 5.3 lbs.) with 6-cell battery pack

    5810: 378 (W) x 259 (D) x 24.8/29.7 (H) mm 2.4 kg ( 5.3 lbs.) with 6-cell battery pack

I got a Aspire Timeline 48010TZ recently and I love it, the battery life is great and the "weaker" CPU I don't really notice it too much.

I paid $550 CND for it on sale and it was cheaper than the 3810 at the time.

    Great deal!
