The center button between the left and right mouse buttons (which serves as a 4-way scroll button) under the touch pad on my ACER Aspire 3690 Laptop does not work. Do I need to install a particular driver for this or is there an option that I need to enable for this to work?
Many Thanks for your help.

download and install the ALPS driver....
in the TOUCHPAD.ZIP driver for my model there are both synaptics and ALPS drivers...
the synaptics driver causes the cursor to jump all over while typing...
the alps solved that problem and the SCROLL button works perfectly
edit:
if the driver for your model doesn't have an ALPS driver.. just download the touchpad.zip for the aspire 5315 and install the ALPS driver for it! -
sorry it took some time.
but do your settings look like this. does the laptop know a centre wheel is thereAttached Files:

In the hardware tab of mouse properties I have one installed hardware called 'PS/2 Compatible Mouse'.

ftp://ftp.work.acer-euro.com/notebo...s & ALPS TouchPad V10.0.15.0&V7.0.1101.17.zip
download and install the ALPS driver from inside that ZIP file -
as above

I downloaded the file and restarted my computer but the problem with the center button is not fixed and the curser is much more difficult to move around now. It keeps on getting stuck and it is much more difficult to work with the touch pad.

there are sensitivity settings available thru the little icon in the task bar... along with scroll button settings too
if you don't have the icon on the task bar... go to the control pannel and then mouse settings
EDIT
or just uninstall the ALPS driver from the add remove section of the control pannel -
and you could use the virtual scrollAttached Files:

Could you please let me know how I could change the mouse settings to optimal as the touch pad has really become a pain to work with since downloading the driver. It has become very unresponsive. Thanks a lot

?
each part has a full list of instructions. just take your time -
just install the synaptics driver and follow hoggies instructions....
-
In my mouse properties I have a General, Driver and Details tab. The screenshot seems to be different to what I have.
-
un-install the ALPS driver
install the SYNAPTICS DRIVER
then your screen should look similar to hoggies -
ok. right click icon in system tray.select pointing device properties.Device settings tab.highlight the mouse device.now select settings.
this will open the full settings screen for the pointing device. -
Sorry for being so annoying but could you please let me know where to download the SYNAPTICS DRIVER from.
-
select your model and all your drivers are there -
OK, GREAT! Thanks guys. I have now downloaded the SYNAPTICS DRIVER and now the 4 way scroll is also working. You guys are great. Thanks a lot.

Something that I have noticed with the Synaptics driver.....
If SynTPEnh is disabled at startup in msconfig than the scroll button will not work.
If you are running XP go start then run and type in msconfig and select startup and ensure that SynTPEnh is ticked. If not tick it and restart your computer.
The scroll button should then work properly.
