A guy posted on youtuve about his 7738G that had a GTX260M in it.
I was sceptical as there is no room for a type-B card (due to capacitors and such) so I called him out on it.
Well blow me, he did it the hard-core way:

OMG the crazy guy desoldered the capacitors and rewired them...

The inductors too, then took a hacksaw to his heatsink.
It's so crazy I am thinking about doing the same to a GTX460M without the power heatsink so I dont need to haksaw my own stuff.
The soldering looks simple enough, I have an old 5935G motherboard thats dead that I am going to practise on.
The only long term downside is that i'd have to cut one of the bottom pannel screw holes off to be able to put the cover on. It's not massivly important as there are 4 screws already holding it down. -

But the 6770M is faster and fits without mods while running cooler. -
And we didn't even talk about the Quadro 2000M, which is basically GeForce GT 560M.
BTW, that hot hacksaw-on-heatpipe action is not really a good idea - heatpipes have fluid in them, for convection. Attack one with a hacksaw, and its heat transfer statistics diminish big time (close to 0). -

GTX560M = 775/1550/625 192 shaders, 24 ROPs, 192bit GDDR5
Quadro = 550/1100/900 192 shaders, 16 ROPs, 128bit DDR3
Less Rops, lower clocks, less than half the memory bandwidth.
It's not even close to a GTX460M, plus it has half the bandwidth of the 6770M while consuming almost twice the power.
What he did was cut the heatpipes, remove them and then place the copper insert of his cooler on the copper insert of the old one to keep the VRM heatsink attached. -
wow! really hard core xD nice one tho.

Hey there, the hd5850 is compatible, though mine was a Dell card.
Has to sit on the ram slots and you need to be careful with the heatsink.
Don't expect firmware updates as Acer never dreamed of this.
Either your card is dead or the vbios is not compatible. -
hello Meaker,
You are the Guru of acer aspire 7738g hardware mod.
My card is a 5870m taked from a Clevo (W870CU, W860CU, P150, P170, W880CU, X7200, X8100), can i flash the vbios Dell?
How other card i can by for my 7738g? im looking to a 6870m on ebay from an Alienware M17 with Dell vbios, is this card ok for my notebook?
many thanks

Possibly, I'm afraid you are in uncharted waters. I am the only one to have tested a 5850M, dell cards seemed to have worked in the past. The 6870M has a chance at working.
As for flashing the bios, the machine will refuse to boot without a recognised (ie working) graphics card so blind flashing is not possible.
There goes my chance for most modded 7738g
