Ok, as the title says, I'm thinking about getting the 5742G, should I?
I've researched what I could, checked for other threads on the forum, but I'm unable to find dirt on it.. is it flawless?
ANYONE who has it, please do fill me in if this is worth getting, and what issues it has, if any.
..cause the owner's lounge didn't feed my hunger for finding flaws.
Was originally going to get the 8943G, but it's not in store, and as how I'm currently in the army, don't really have the time to wait for it to get back in stock, and they had the 5742G, so I'm thinkin' 'bout it.
anything, anyone, please mention and thanks in advance for anything that might help my decision-making.
-
bump.
nothing? is this laptop so good for what the promises are? -
Forum search doesn't work properly so you have to use Google
aspire 5742 site:forum.notebookreview.com
From what I recall there were some problems with those- it's not very popular yet quite a few people had the same problem- I think it was overheating.
Dig a bit deeper into those results- I remember that we had posts on it- just can't remember what it was that was wrong exactly.
Sorry- the best I can do
I read just too many posts... -
well, thanks anyways, nice to know what ever you may have.
on the case of heating, can't you just balance that out with a cooling pad? or is it something else than cpu etc? -
Possibly but it's not the best idea to buy a notebook that causes problems from the start. Have you considered Aspire 5820TG for example? This one causes no problems.
-
hmm, gonna check the 5820TG out, but I'd really like to get a laptop that is good for gaming in general.... and that probably wont fail when bf3 comes around.
-
Which GPU are you considering (in 5742G) is it nVidia 420M or is there a 540M version available?
-
540M version
-
There's not much difference between HD5650 and 540M although the latter is some 10% faster. When comparing benchmarks mind the fact that most notebooks with 540M are equipped with SandyBridge CPUs.
Aspire 5742G doesn't use SB so it doesn't score as high- read this review especially part where they compare gaming performance. -
was it the 420M or the 540M that had heat problems? or both lol
-
It doesn't matter- the cooling system is the same so if that is the problem it affects both cards (both have similar TDP).
Anyway- don't quote me on that- I just remember that there was a problem and I think it was the cooling.
I just wish forum search was working properly- search results are way clearer (posts previews) with forum search than with Google. -
gaaaah, the thing about cooling problems, is that some are bad, and some you can live with (like those who you can solve with a cooling pad, or just lifting the laptop up of it's surface, so that it circulates air better).
but, some of the "problems" aren't performance-affecting cooling-issues.
like, take this in to consideration, my current laptop is the 6920G :| -
What I'm saying is that's not very prudent to buy a laptop with known issues.
If you're not in a hurry maybe you should wait a bit and see how the line looks like refreshed with SB CPUs and AMD's 6550s and nVidia's 540M and then decide? -
KIND of in a hurry, not so much, but sorta want a new one soon.
got time off from army now, but I go back on Monday. :/
..but, I CAN wait.
edit: on another note. I wont be playing crysis1 or 2, so don't need a laptop to fit that role, but I'd like something that can do 30-ish fps at least, while gaming with high/max settings. (play BF:BC2 etc) -
Both HD5650 and 540M average some 30-32fps on high settings.
With some OC and minor tweaks it should be OK. -
so... I'm getting it... might end up regretting it, but what the hell, it CAN'T be as bad of a road trip as the 6920G.. so win anyhow
