    Hi :)

I recently bought an Averatec notebook and ended up being really disappointed with its performance and faults (dead pixels, faulty keyboard, faulty dvd drive etc...). Hopefully it was just a one off but it has made me nervous!

I am thinking of buying the Acer Aspire 5014WLMi as a replacement and I wondered if any of you who own Acers could give me some feedback as to whether they are a 'good' brand or not? The notebook will be used mostly for my work but I also need it to be able to play some of the good games out there well and most of all to be reliable!

    Many thanks

I've had no problems with my Acer so if the model you're looking at has what you need and want in a laptop go for it. The only areas where Acer is a bit below some other manufacturers is built materials, usually an Acer is priced a few hundred dollars below a similiar laptop from someone else since they may use a stiffer frame to hold all the components. I do notice that my Acer has a bit of flex but I always pick it up via opposite corners and I handle mine pretty carefully, other than that they put good stuff inside them and you'll probably save some money going with them vs. someone else. Screenwise I'm happy with mine and I don't have that brite screen that started getting popular soon after I got mine. Just give your's a good lookover before committing to buying it and you should be good to go. Good luck.

I had my Acer TM 4150 for a week now and its great. Nice bright screen, excellent battery life and overall very good performance for the price. Yeah the build quality is so so. The keyboard and case isnt has solid as a rock, but not weak as paper. And my dvd/cdrw drive is a bit loose. Other than that, I recommend Acer.

For most north american consumers Acer would be considered a cheap no-name brand. But that is farther from the truth, Acer is among the top 5 manufactures of computers worldwide. In Asia, Europe, and other areas Acer is probably one of the most well known brands.

I would recommend an Acer. They have great systems for a low price. Their systems are also very reliable. Regarding technical support, the quality of service would depend also where you are, support may be better off with companies like Dell or HP though.

    Hi

I'll also recommend Acer. The 5024 is a great machine in performance and it uses the same case/chassis as the 5014 I think. Build quality is good although the keyboard does depress slightly but I may just be a bit heavy handed.

You should have no problems with games whatsoever with the 5014, and you get a lot more bang for you buck as it were over other laptops of similar spec.

I haven't tested battery life as it has been plugged in most of the time and it's not as hefty as I thought it would be.

I hope I have been of some help

    Jim

Many thanks guys, I did buy the Acer, and well, it is fab. No dead pixels, no faults.... :) It is a bit bigger and heavier than I had expected, battery life ain't great, but then it is being used mostly at home so that's really not a problem at all. The keyboard does depress slightly in the middle but I'm a light typer so that's also not an issue.

And... the best bit of all... it not only plays the games I want, it plays them even better than my desktop pc. I mean it really flies eith em :)

    Thanks again
    One happy Pumpkin :D
