    Hi Guys

I just updated my Acer Aspire 5735 notebook from 3gb DDR2 to 4gb DDR2. The bios now detects 4gb total as does Vista's System Page (Control Panel/System in Ultimate 64bit)

However when i go to task manager/performance my total physical memory shows up as 3000MB and the Physical Memory Usage graph seems to reflect this 3gb total.

Is there something I need to do to get vista to detect and utilise the 4gb total?

    Thanks in advance

Have you tried running a diagnostic program like memtest86+ to ensure that the RAM module is functioning properly and free of defects?

I think there is an issue with the RAMS. Run the RAM tool under vista or memtest. It might also be a bug and you will need to do a fresh install.

    This is mine.

    P.S. BOG was faster.

Ok I can test the RAM but i probably should of mentioned I've been running the system with the new 2gb stick in it for a week now with absolutely no stability problems obviously it hasn't been as stressed as a memory test would put it under so I can give that a go.

It might be a bug. Vista sees as 4 GB but taskmanager does not. Fresh install will fix it or update of the chipset inf, etc. Go to help->about in task manager. What does it say as physical memory available?

    Hi Guys

Really appreciate your quick replies! I just ran the vista ram testing tool (only on basic because of time restrictions) and it ran 2 passes with no fault found.

Wishmaker I just went to that section and it says 3,072,060KB interesting!

Fresh install would rule out software issues (hopefully) but obviously I'm trying to leave that to last as it's a pretty big job :(

I have 4,192,552 KB so, something is fishy there...

Wishmaker, Do you know if there is anyway I can confirm how much ram the onboard video has allocated to it? There is no way for me to change it in the bios and it indicates 64mb but obviously it's worth checking. Unfortunately the bios is so limited there isn't really anything I can alter in there.

You should not worry about that on 64bit. Tell me one thing. Did you toy with the boot options? You know, there is a way to limit the memory on a 64bit OS and it will give something like you have, eventhough you have 4 GB installed.

oh ok i feared the onboard video was hogging 1gb of my ram :) Yeah i know the setting you are talking about in msconfig (came across it when googling for a solution) that limit memory tickbox is definately unchecked.

Do you mean dxdiag? Msconfig is for start up programs and such; it has nothing to do with graphics.

Yeah I meant msconfig in the boot/advanced options section there's a checkbox for "maximum memory"

If it is unchecked then a reinstall is a must ;). Make sure you have the latest BIOS and chipset drivers. Just in case.

    Hi Mate

I've just done a bit more exploring and tried memtest in dos mode and it only showed up 3000mb available as well! It's starting to look like a bios/chipset problem here. I've just started a new thread asking if anyone knows if this particular model is limited for some reason.

    Thanks again for your assistance.

I've currently got version 1.07 by the looks of it. I can't seem to find any bios to download at all for my model 5735-733G32Mn laptop on acers site :(

Your system came with 3gb of system memory and Vista Home Premium 32bit, right? Did you clean install Ultimate 64bit before or after you upgraded the memory? What specs are the memory you upgraded to? According to the Intel website, the GM45 express chipset can support up to 8gb.

    1.1 Intel® PM45 Express Chipset Feature Support
    1.1.1 Processor
    • Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processors and Intel® Core™ 2 Extreme processors
    • 667-MHz, 800-MHz and 1066-MHz FSB
    • Source synchronous double-pumped (2x) address
    • Source synchronous quad-pumped (4x) data
    • Support for Dynamic FSB Frequency Switching
    • Other key features are:
    — Support for Intel® Trusted Execution Technology (Intel® TXT) commands and
    signaling

    the GMCH’s memory address space
    — 12-deep, in-order queue to pipeline FSB commands
    — AGTL+ bus driver with integrated AGTL termination resistors
    1.1.2 System Memory

    • No support for ECC
    • No support for 1N operation

I found on the US site that the 5735 is available with 4gb from the factory with Home Premium 64bit. So I don't think Acer has limited the max memory on this model. I think you may have to do a clean install of your OS.
