Hey, I was wondering if anyone had any info on upgrading an Acer TravelMate 2450.
It's extremely tough to find info on the web about upgrading any of the components.. I can't even find a service manual anywhere..
I want to upgrade the CPU to something more powerful than the Celery M 410 and down the road add a larger HDD.
I'm a total noob to Acers and the BIOS seems a little "controlled" by Acer. Does anyone have info on upgrading an Acer HDD? Will the BIOS not run if it doesn't see the Acer partition on the drive?
ANY info would help!
Thanks

I am not sure about the cpu
you can upgrade the hdd in any acer, if the acer partion is not there it will just disable D to D recovery which means you can't recover with the partion, but you can with the DVD's
as for a hdd, just undo the 2 screw on the bottom of the computer
undo the screw(s) holding the 'tray' with the hdd in it, the remove
unscrew the drive form the tray, and switch out with the desired drive.
reverse steps to re assemble and then put your recovery disk in... -
you can upgrade the hard drive. but you need to clone your previous harddrive or install windows again in your new hard drive. i think CPU can upgrde also but dunno what CPU match on celeron M.
look at this link i think this on will fit.

and this is your CPU spec.

im not quite sure just giving you and idea -
I currently own an Acer Travelmate 2450 (2451wlci) that also came with the Celeron M410 (1.46ghz) processor. Since Acer tech support was no help (they told me that the processor WAS NOT upgradeable) so I struck out on my own. ATI specifications for the Xpress 200M chipset, and Intel specifications for the processors, made me pretty confident that any celeron M4xx (M410, M420, M430, M440, M450) Yonah core would work. This was proven to be true when I installed a Celeron M430 (1.73ghz/533fsb) with no problems. The first generation of core duo processors are also based on the yonah core (T2050/533, T2080/533, T2250/533, T2350/533, T2450/533, T2300/667, T2400/667, T2500/667, T2600/667, T2700/667). I then proceeded to install an Intel Core Duo 2050 (1.66ghz/533fsb) also with no problems. I am currently looking for an ebay special on a T2400/667 or T2500/667 to try next.
The first thing I did when I got this laptop was create the restore cd's, yank the original harddrive, install a 60gb Seagate harddrive, and reload the OS from the restore cd's (no restore partition req'd). The only issue I have with this system is that it does not like both memory slots filled. I have tried matched pairs of DDR2 667 from crucial and was having all kinds of problems. When reduced to just one stick of memory (in either slot) all my problems went away.
Good luck. -
Follow up to previous post:
I have since upgraded to a T2450\2GHz\533fsb core duo processor, also with no problems. I've come a long way from the original 1.46 Celeron, what a difference. I'm not sure about the next level of Yonah core processors (T2300, T2400, T2500, T2600, T2700) since the fsb jumps to 667MHz and the power requirements jump from 27 watts to 31 watts. If I can get a deal on a T2300 I'll try it out and post the results here.
Happy modding! -
I was waiting for you to post an update on this. I went ahead and purchased a T2250/533/1.73 which I am hoping to receive this week. I hope I have the same luck you've had as the original celery is killing me.

I put the processor in tonight. Works great. What a difference. Now I just need to buy some ram as I still have the 256 it came with. I already know that almost nobody has got this particular laptop to run two sticks of memory so I'm going to be safe and pick up a single 1 gb stick.

I know this has no relevancy to the topic whatsoever, but I just love your screenname, I_like_boobs. I also like your avatar.
Reminds me of Sean Connery in Celebrity Jeopardy on SNL. -
I got t2300 if any one want to buy it cheap :>

Sounds like you're on the right track. I was pretty sure somebody would be able to find my results useful. I'm still trying to find a low priced T2300 or T2400 to try out next.
Mod on! -
See this thread (Its a sticky by the way) : http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=206137
You will find excellent advice and help there

hi madmtnmummey
I think u could help me! i also own a travelmate 2450 and buyed a (1.66ghz/533fsb). then i install it and turn on the power, the screen is black. it sounds like the laptop is just fine, but still the screen is black. can u help me? or anybody else? i tried updating the bios from 1.30 to 1.50 but no difference at all!
I have installed 2 x 1gb ddr2 ram, it work just fine. -
I upgraded my cpu to T5500 more then a half year ago, it is rocks!
The only problem with tha mainboard is that does not work with DDR2 667MHz sodimm, only ccepts 533MHz. :-( -
As you managed that? I do not think any more post of people who managed to use the t5500
-
Well I finally got my hands on a 1gb stick. I put it in alongside the stock 256 mb stick and all went well. I now have 1.25 gb of memory to go along with my T2250. The difference is night and day from the original configuration.

DotMaster,
I haven't check this thread in a while, but regarding your post on 3/20/08:
1) Did you try to put the old processor back in? If so, What happened? If you bought the processor used it could be faulty.
2) What processor model are you trying to use? You give the clock and fsb speeds but not the model name and number of the processor. -
Regarding taril's post on 3/20/08:
I have to echo speed netbr's post and add my own surprise with your t5500 upgrade. The power requirements of 34 watts for the t5500 are quite a bit higher than the 27 watt needs of the original celeron. Are you still trouble free? Have you had any overheat problems?
If what you report is correct, then my congratulations for such a big leap! -
Boobs,, i sent ya a PM

I recently acquired a Acer Travelmate 2450, which has a 1.46ghz celeron. I see a lot of you guys have put t2050 processors in that notebook. I have tried and tried to get that processor to work in my travelmate and nothing. I tried 533mhz and 667mhz memory together and each of them by themselves. My bios is version 1.50. I get nothing either way, I am fairly certain that the processor is working. I was wondering if anyone here at any other ideas or anything really.
Thanks -
Madmummy--I'm following in your footsteps putting a Celeron M 450 in my Acer Travelmate 2451WLCi. Any advice on how to crack open the case and find the CPU? Any other advice you can share--BIOS upgrades?
Thanks!

Figured I'd post a progress report. The T2450 processor is still going strong. I've updated my signature to reflect the TWO GIGS OF RAM! FINALLY! I have tried at least six different brands/speeds/and chip manufacturers. I've tried 533mhz, 667mhz, Hy**x, Sams**g, no-name generic, plus everything I could get my hands on from ebay for cheap (I've got a stack of spare memory now by the way) and had pretty much given up on dual sticks of ram until I saw a 2gb kit on New**g for Cruc**l part number "CT2KIT12864AA667" for TWENTY BUCKS! I could not resist one more try, especially since I paid almost $200.00 two years ago for a 2gb kit that would not work. The retailer was very gracious though and RMA'd them for me for a complete refund. It pays to deal with reputable e-tailers.
I don't know if there was a problem with the memory sockets (misaligned connector or two?), or if I finally found compatible memory, or if newer manufacturing processes have made the memory more universally compatible, but all is well now. I've also stepped up to 120gb hard drive so I think I'm pretty much maxed out, should hold me for a while unless I get my hands on another potential victim, er, umm... project I mean....
Happy modding! -
Bumping a old post. I have t2250 on the way. After reading some, sounds like pinmods work on the duo's. Problem is on intel boards the multiplier is locked at 9 or something. Lucky for us we have ati chipsets and it sounds like that the multi remains the same. I'll give it a shot and hopefully i'll get the t2250 to run at 2.1ghz, i doubt the memory will run at 667. I'll let you guys know if it works.
