Hi my laptop lost its sound along with the use of the usb ports. In the device manager everything appears well, no yellow exclamation marks.
Anybody with any ideas or advice?

Have you tried uninstalling the drivers and then reinstalling them?

Sound and USB drivers require the chipset drivers too, so i'd start by downloading the INTEL CHIPSET IDENTIFIER UTILITY from intel's website, then run the program.. findout what chipset your Motherboard contains and the go back to the intel websit and download the correct INF or DRIVER files for your chipset.

run that program to "re-install your chipset drivers".. then reboot,, if you still have the same issuses then you can download the sound drivers for your model and install them,, hopefully that will help you out.

    good luck,

I have reinstalled the operating sysytem. Still no sound. In the past I have seen some sort of error as it boots (post) ... maybe like not connected check connection....

Are there any guides dealing with disasembly. I pulled all srews that I can see from the bottom. I don't know how to remove the key board or the DVD rom.

did you install the chipset drivers when you reinstalled the OS??

i honsestly don't see how disassembly of the laptop is going to do you any good. if the sound chip which is probably built onto the motherboard has a problem you won't be able to replace it..

and the fact that you developed USB problems at the exact same time definately points to the motherboard chipset drivers...and just re-installing the OS is not going to fix those drivers especially if you are dealing with windows xp,,, i

had to install my chipset drivers twice... one time to identify the chipset and usb hardware, then reboot then had to install a second time for my sound hardware to be correctly identified.

i would try the simple easy things first,, before i went to poking around inside.

just my three cents, or whatever it's worth,

I will install the chip set drivers. I tried to use the identifier tool earlier but notebook is too old
I was thinking that if a chip was bad I might be able to look at it and tell..(discolored) The usb's are not totally dead. The light on a jump drive flickers for a second. But nothing will function from them.

P.S. Would I not just have installed the once again when I reinstalled the operating system?

there are 2 versions of the chip identifier tool

    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...&OSFullName=Windows* XP Home Edition&lang=eng

this first one is for newer chipsets::::

one is for older (pre 910 chipsets) this link below is for older chipsets

    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...&OSFullName=Windows* XP Home Edition&lang=eng

if your chipset is older that a 910 and is recoginzed by the above program then you most likley would be installing the chipset drivers by installing winXP,
but don't take it for granted that MS and XP is all knowing. like i said in a previous post,, with the 965GM chipset i had to install the chipset INF file and reboot then reinstall the chipset drivers again before the sound device was recognized as a sound device... then i had to install the actual drivers for the sound chip.

try that second link... see if it detects your chipset
then search for your chipset model driver files.

    later,
    bigozone

4000s suffered from a problem with the onboard sound. There are two ways to fix it.
    1. Try the latest bios update and install the latest audio drivers which fixes some
    2. Replace the M/B (more likley fault as the USB ports are also dodgy)
There is no point stripping the machine to see if the audio chip is discoloured as I can guarantee that even if it is dead, it won't be discoloured. They just stop working for some reason

Hi I tried your suggestionÂ…installed the chipset INF file, rebooted then installed the chipset drivers. Still nothing. I must say I had a difficult time on Intels site last night.

Any guidance on getting latest file. I have seen the newer version in the past but was never able to get it to load. There is something to be said about Acers siteÂ….

Well installed the latest bios and still no sound. So if the chip is bad, there is no replacing the chip, the whole board would have to be replaced?
