Hey guys i just got travelmate 4402 because it was a great low priced gamin solution, that being said i got this lappy yesterday, and immediatly started the install of my stuff, testing games and such. This is where the problem arises. After running a game i noticed graphics tearing on most settings, and i cant get drivers updates for this card from either ati or acer. Then i noticed the tearin on the other games i had installed aswell, hf2 ut2004 eve. I tried omega drivers but they just crashed the machine and i had to reformat/recover, it would freeze up in windows. Now i would think that this is a problem with the video card, deffective, but running 3dmark05 i notice no tearing gettin 990 and no problems running dvd's. So i was thinking it might be a drivers problem since i cant even find any for this machine, maybe im on the alpha/beta drivers :p. Id would like any of your guys suggestions as i am new to the notebook market, though i know quite alot about computers.

ps I already got a mail submitted to acer tech, but not sure what kind of answer ill get from them.

    anything helps
    Thanks

    Brock

I don't believe that is a problem with your specific notebook. I have had problems with image tearing on many of my machines. Try the latest Catalyst Mobility ATi 5.9 drivers. They are avaliable at Driverheaven . ;)

Let me know if that helps!

    Hey thanks for the reply,

just so we are clear, by tearing i mean image will create weird random ripping, almost like triangle, in the graphics, even when im not moving around in the enviroment. Though no checkboard, and no tearing in 3dmarks where would think you should see them.

That being said, just to make sure we are on the right page, i did install the cat m 5.9 last night and got vgpu recover and still the same tearing.

Another thing i noticed is that the notebook gets extremely hot, i installed speedfan, since i had read your post, but i do not see a way to turn the fans up. Also the temps where really high 45-70 if i recall.

maybe it would just be easier to return and try another to see if i get the same results??

    thanks

    UPDATE

I have great news guys, i think ive found the culprit. I was messing around with the laptop a little more today, and i notice the graphics tearing ONLY when the laptop is plugged into the ac adapter.

Like i mentioned before im not to laptop savy, so is there something wrong here?

ac adapter/charging might be causing the x700 to lose power?

    dunno
    any thoughts?

I've found that having McAfee AV running while running a game sometimes makes sound/video choppy and stutter-ey. If you have an AV running, you could try to disable/close it.. just a shot in the dark :p

Or since the CPU is running at top speed, it is overheating?

It only happens when adapter is plugged in. No problems when its disconnected.

same cpu usage but with the ac plugged the computer gets very hot i cant tell if the fan is on high either, though with it not plugged in graphics are fine and temps hold pretty well and i notice the fan goes on high with high cpu usage.

doesnt sound right so ive decided to try my luck and rma and get another :p

at least ive got posts to help others in the future.

Perhaps you could download Notebook Hardware Control and tell us what the temp is when it is doing this.

It will happen if you overclock your GPU's memory too much.

no overclocking whatsoever, and the temps get really hot, 50-70
and only graphics tearing when ac is plugged in, There is some evidence to support that it only gets hot when ac is plugged in, still testing that though.
