$2500 is a good price for a model with that much stuff...however, im almost POSITIVE they will release a model that's around 2 grand with lower specs...Just like with the 8100 series

Well, I'll go out on a limb and say that we'll probably see this at lower than $2499 if not right at launch then within a month. The $2499 is what they hope the retailer will sell them for but you can't hold them to it due to a little law known as anti-trust so you hope they'll use it as a guideline. I think we'll see a lower price once a few more distributor gets it in stock.

Nice review. The x1600 scores were kind of disappointing, but I'm still going to get one.

from all the new laptops i have seen being released within January, the Best one is the Acer 8200.

All other laptops were just pathetic in my mind, either to heavy, thick, poor resolution, vid card was not an X1600 and etc...

So for January the Acer 8200 is top DOG! :D

In a few month (march) you will see alot of 15.4" laptops, but the Acer 8200 sets the bar real high at this time for that market.

    :D

    Thanks,

    MysticGolem

If you don't take widescreen into consideration, the the ASUS V6Vj might be a good contender but at 15". Thin, light, powerful and sexy. Probably a few more similar models for Asus in the Lamborghini lineup.

I am loving this laptop. Has any other manufacturer come up with a 15.x" with WSXGA+ resolution. The resolution for me is pretty important and this seems to be the only option out there with the new chips.

Does anyone happen to know UK release dates? The reason I ask is I am going to Japan on the 10th Feb and really want to get it to take it with me, unless anyone thinks I will be able to pick one up in Japan?

Yo dude, Acer Already said the higher-end model costs $2500 USD

As everyone knows, Europeon countries a bloody expensive.
You cannot use Exchange rates for a final price.

    Acer USA says $2500USD
    Acer UK says 1761 GBP
with exchange rate 1761 UK to USD is 3k so what... not like Acer USA is gonna charge 3k.
You get it now? THINGS in the UK are much more expensive than North America.

    And for another example.

In USA Mcdonald combos are like $4-6 USD but in the UK its not 2-3 pounds... its also 4-6 pounds in the UK... meaning the UK is expensive... hence alot of european countrie exhibit the same results as i've shown.

BUT you can use the exchange rate to get a FIRST hand price before something is released in north america.

As we all know Europe gets new laptops before North America does, so people here like to know prices and specs ahead of time, even though we know the price and specs do change from country to country.

so yah, you get it now?

    Thanks,

    MysticGolem

Don't get too excited. I live in the UK, so I don't need you to tell me everything is more expensive here, I was simply pointing out the price of the TM 8200 in the UK and the equivalent USD value, not everyone is as stupid as you think they are.

Actually the prices are quite similair. That price includes sales tax (17.5%), take that off and you are looking at a price of about $2,570 which is about what it will sell for in the US.

Only thing I don't like about this is that they don't offer any HDD options (120gb SATA 5400 :( ) and 1 year limited warranty just isn't long enough for a notebook of this caliber. Oh well, you can't have everything...

Do you know if the acer 8200 will have 64ibit extensions or is it upgradable...? What would be the significan't difference between dual core processors and 64-bit

You can always pick up the 2 year warranty extension from Acer or one of their retailers. You can even get a 3 year warranty with accidental damage coverage for around US$200

Gateway is selliing a duo core notebook. It uses the ATI 1400 series GPU, but all other configuration options get you in the same performance range of the Acer 8204 and the Asus V6Vj.

Acer has a lower cost, lower spec duo core that been released. It the TM 4204, and selling in the $1200 to $1500 range. It uses the T2300 processor, doesn't have as much RAM and has an integrated GPU. Also, only has a WXGA resolution.

By the way... CDW has the Acer TM 8204 for sale on both their USA and Canada web sites. The US site is listing the product at $2399, while Canada has the unit for $2499. But don't be fooled. $2499 CN is not $2499 US, it's about $2150US bceause of the exchange rate. CDW Canada won't ship to the US. You'll save at least $200 if you buy it from a Canadian eTailer.

    (all prices USD)
Acer also has the Aspire 5670, available at $1500 retail at CompUSA. It's not too different to the TravelMate 8200 series, although it is definitely the lesser of the two.

    http://global.acer.com/products/notebook/as5670.htm
    http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=336978&pfp=BROWSE

It's similar to the 15.4" Gateways, and with the $1500 configuration CompUSA is selling, has 2GB of RAM and 120GB HD (unfortunately, only a T2300 CPU). The closest Gateway over $1800 and still inferior or lesser in some ways.

This laptop has great specs, I love the screen!

Nice design, although I dont particularly like the built in webcam.. any word on a cut down model without it?

It looks a little thick but I guess for those specs its as thin as they could get.

Acer has three models based on the Intel Duo processor: TM8204WLMi; TM4202WLMi; AS5672WLMi. All have webcams.

The TM4202 comes in the same package as the 8204, but has less RAM, a PATA standard HDD, and an Intel embedded GPU, and a WXGA resolution. I saw this at a local CompUSA for $1300 less a $100 rebate.

The AS5672WLMi comes in the Aspire package. It has the "bright screen" display which is only WXGA, the ATI X1400 GPU with 128MB of memory, the same HDD as the 8204, and 2 GB RAM. Saw this at the CompUSA for $1500.

Can't understand why the manufacturers insist on providing products with heavey duty graphics capability and won't provide UXGA or WUXGA resolutions. Not every purchaser of a notebook computer wants to watch DVDs or play games. I am hoping that Acer will tell me how to change the system to allow for WUXGA resolution on the TM8204. I was all set to buy the TM8104WLMi when I saw the announcement for the new series. Look like I'm going to spend about $800 more than I wanted to.

You can view all of the new product specs at Acer's web site: www.acer.com

I just placed a preorder at CDW for $2399.

Just curious, where do you find a 3 year warranty and accidential damage coverage for $200?

You could probably Google and do a search for aftermarket warranty services. Also, try the Acer web site.

Does the Acer aftermarket warranty cover accidental spills and damage, similar to Dell's CompleteCare?

I actually found the cheapest place remotely reliable to buy the warranty was at PROVANTAGE. But then again its only a couple of dollars.

There should be 2 version, one is a simple warranty extension and one adds the accidental damage coverage.

Which one adds the accidental damage? The pages does not say which one is which.
