In all honesty, what do you think of this machine:

    http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pr...8&atab=&spviewed=&newlang=EN&logon=&langid=en

Hopefully that link works, if not, here are the specs:

    Processor Type Intel Centrino 735A
    Screen Size 14.1"
RAM (Preloaded / Maximum) 1GB DDR RAM (Exp. To 2GB)
    Hard Drive 100GB 5400RPM
Optical Drives DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Drive
Graphics 128MB (Shared) Intel GMA 900
    Average Battery Life 2.5 Hours
    Product Weight 2.7 kg
Audio Type Intel High Definition Audio
    Battery Type Lithium-Ion
    Cache 1MB L2
    Fax/Modem 56K V.92
    I/O Ports 3 x USB 2.0, 1 x VGA, 1 x DC-In
Included In Box Info Not Available
Network Card 10/100 Ethernet LAN, 802.11b/g WLAN

This is a sale going on right now in Canada. At $799.99 CAD, what do you think? I was looking at the Dell XPS M1210, but I mean, when it is all said and done, that machine is close to $2000. I am looking at other alternatives, sometimes one can stumble upon hiden gems.

I work at Future Shop, this is one of our more popular 14.1" notebooks. Centrino + 1GB RAM + 100GB HD for $799.99 is always a good buy. Only a couple of things I don't like about this model: curved keyboard and matte screen .. I'm a real sucker for looks :p

Also check out the HP dv2020ca. It's on sale for $999.99 this week :) Best deal in the 14.1" notebooks category.

    Cheers !

Interesting review indeed, and the price, well can't be beat for components. BUT, will the owners of this notebook be left out to dry in the comming, technologically advancing months ahead?

And the actual build quality, does this notebook lack?

Well, no notebook is perfect. For the price of the TM2428, I think it is a pretty good deal. as for as tech advances, it will probably run Vista but without any of the fancy graphics and will probably work with one of the lower end versions of Vista. Otherwise it should prettty much be fine for the basic user who just needs to run Win XP.

I havent used this particular notebook, but I would guess it would be similar to other Acer notebooks -Decent but not the best.

If I were able to fork out, lets say up to $1200ish, what notebook would you recommend?

What are you planning to do with the laptop. Gaming? regular/work use?

If you want something which is Vista proof, then get a laptop with anything other than a GMA950. Although it can still be used to run the Aero inteface performance might not be exactly desirable. No current laptop is exactly future proof since DX10 will only be released with Vista and current graphics cards are all DX9. So..if you want something which can be atleast considered future proof then wait for Core 2 Duo laptops to appear.

    Hello,

I too am looking at purchasing this laptop. The one drawback for me is the curved keyboard. I haven't seen at as my parents will be buying it in Canada and sending it to me in Germany. Any comments... thanks :). (btw. if it had a normal straight keyboard, I wouldn't think twice about buying it ... so I just need to know if it is inconvient).

    Thanks

The curved keyboard is not too much of an inconvience. I have used it and the curve can only be felt in the edges where ae the keys are a bit angled. Other than that I found it was easy to adjust. Also the keyboard is not as curved as it seems in the pictures. But in the end it is down to personl preference I guess. If you can I would suggest trying it out before buying the laptop.
