Just reformatted and fresh installed XP, and I've noticed that the screen brightness is low, even when it's at it maximum. Is there a specific driver i need to install?

First, is this for the 6292 or the 3290?

You might be able to correct the problem by going to the Display Properties/Settings/Advanced section and seeing if you have a Color option there. Most graphics cards allow you to adjust the brightness and gamma settings further from there, so you can push it up a little more and see if it helps. Otherwise you might want to try removing and reinstalling the graphics card driver.

It's the 3290, as it says in the thread title ;)

I've installed 3 different graphics drivers, I'll have a look for some settings.

Also, the using the Fn key and F keys (such as Fn+F6, which is supposed to mute/unmute speakers) doesn't work. The Fn+Leftarrow/rightarrow works (to change screen brightness) but all other functions don't work. I've never had to install drivers for these functions on other Acers before.

All the brightness settings in the driver control panel just add more white into the screen, it doesn't actually brighten it up.

Argh playing Doom3 is really hard

In regards to the Fn keys, do you have Launch Manager installed?

You're not in some sort of power saving mode are you?

Yeah I installed launch manager and that got the Fn keys working.

As for the brightness, I tried installing the resource eating ePower acer stuff, but it already says it's maxed out. I feel certain that the screen is not a s bright as it should be, it looks really dull next to other laptops and games like Doom3 and NFS Carbon are very very dark. It also makes CS:S quite difficult.

Sorry to bump - but I still have this problem, anyone have any ideas?

It's starting to put a bit of a strain on my eyes :S particularly reading forums like this where the background is not white but a light grey.

Since the launch manager is installed, it shouldn't be a software problem. The only software issue is that ePower has a tendency to reset itself at random after a restart. Other than that it could be the inverter (supplies power to the backlight) starting to fail or the backlight itself failing. You could also check to see whether the sleep switch is sticking but this is unlikley. If its as bad as you say then it may be worth getting it looked at. Hope this helps
