Having just bought a new wireless router to use with my new notebook I tried to stream some video from my desktop pc (plugged in via a cable to the router) only to find out it was too slow! At first I thought it was the router so have just spent hours looking for info. Then I plugged the laptop into the ethernet cable and the desktop wireless via a USB 802.11g gizmo. And the speed was infinately better. Therefore the problem must lie within the laptop. Has anyone else had similair experiences? Is this to do with needing driver or chipset updates from intel? Or a bios update from acer. On the acer site I found a 2200GB driver but it is a lot older then the one already in my laptop. Any help would be gratefully received. Thanks in advance. (BTW I could use the USB device in my laptop but that kind of defeates the prupose of buying the centrino chipset!)

Mostly you Router will be having a atheros based chipset and USB dongle might have the same chipset . This might be one of the reason for throughput improvment

But there could be many other factors too anyways i will suggest u better way to measure throuhput

Download the program Qcheck ( itz free)
    http://www.ixiacom.com/products/performance_applications/pa_display.php?skey=pa_q_check

Install on both router and notebook and measure througput from same distance First using Notebook and the USB dongle then report it here. It would help to analyse the sitauation more clearly

BTW: Hope u are using the latest drivers for your Intel 2200

Hi, thanks for the info. I have just downloaded the qcheck software but dont have the time right now to play with it. I have used FTP to test speeds though, with the onboard wireless throughput is around 80-120 KB/s (slightly too slow for most divx streaming), and with the dongle averaging a steady 400KB/s which is a significant difference. I have just updated the 2200 BG drivers and the 855 chipset drivers and am now having a problem even trying to surf the net on the laptop, some pages just wont open, and I cant even browse files on the network. But with the dongle everything is fine.

Qcheck has feature to stream test also u cant get exact figures with it
Besides that it can give all the info needed like response time , Tcp upd throughput..etc

Finally solved the problem by using the latest drivers from the intel website. Surprisingly these drivers are not on the acer website, instead the stuff on the acer website is completely out of date. Incase anyone else has had the same problem here are the links to the intel website for the latest wireless 2200 BG drivers and 855 chipset:
