The dealer has a demo that is offered at what appears to be a good price. $1,500CDN: 1.6 Cenrtino, SXGA screen, 512 meg ram, 60 gig hard drive. I've found a number of positive reviews on the web but I don't see the unit advertised by Acer dealers so I'm wondering if this is a model that is no longer manufactured and has been replaced by a newer model.

If you are an owner, I would appreciate your comments on the unit.

    Hi aja

Yes, this model is no longer being sold, the Travelmate 8000 modle replaced it around July. The Travelmate 800 is still a very good laptop. I own the Travelmate 802Lci. This notebook is a really good machine and is really fast. The high resolution screen is also very good (1400x1050). Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 run well in 1024x768 and medium graphics. There is also a smart card security system which is really neat. Basically when you remove the smart card, the computer locks down. It also comes with a 4 in 1 memory card reader, something I haven't found in any other notebook. It also comes with a weight saver module which replaces your CD drive when you don't want to carry it around. I know many of these features can be bought as an option. But I like how Acer simply includes it with the notebook. To be quite honest, I really think Acers give you very good bang for your buck!

The only real gripe I have about the notebook is that the bottom left hand side of the notebook gets hot (because of HD). Other than that, I have had no issues with it. I also think the best feature about the 800 series is that they have 3 year warranty standard. I don't know why they didn't carry that to the 8000 series. I have owned IBM/Dells and currently own an Apple iBook as well. The Travelmate 800 I have is really the only notebook that I have ever owned and have truly been happy with.

    Hope this helps.

I'm having difficulty establishing the retail price for the 800 units so I can determine if $1,500CDN for a demo is a good price. Can you tell me what the price was when you bought yours?

I paid $2700.00 Canadian Dollars for mine over 18 months ago. The specs are as follows:
    -Centrino (Banias) 1.5Ghz
    -512MB RAM
    -CD-DVD Combo Drive
    -40 GB HD

As for whether or not this is a good price... I really wouldn't know. That is up to you.
