That's exactly how I feel. I have the tools to easily do the job, but I wouldn't want to have to go through this everytime I wanted to repaste. Plus ribbon cable connectors are so delicate. I hate even looking at them. I was replacing the screen on my psp back in the day and all was going well. . .then I break the latch on the ribbon cable for the screen. Ever since then I've always looked at them with scourn.

Im looking heavily into choosing this laptop for my next purchase.
I typically sell my laptop just before the new gpu's come out so upgrading components and keeping the laptop a long time don't matter to me.
What does matter to me is if this is a 90 watt or 80 watt Max-q 2080. The Aero is likely 80 watt as gigabyte said in a recent CES interview. These are the lower power Max-q chips and perform even worse than a regular Max-q. I'm afraid this second generation of Max-q gpu's are taking advantage of the 2080 name and rather than offering 15% less performance are going to give 25-40% less performance. Which would mean that all those people that trashed Max-q when it first came out would be proved right.
So with all those heatpipes it better be a 90 watt Max-Q. Also hope the keyboard is nice to use. Curious how the Gsync will be implemented while giving good battery life. -
Wow, this comes unexpected. All the performant Acer laptops from last year (A515, A517, A715, A717, Predator Helios 300, Triton 700) were easy to open and you could directly access the heatpipes.
And now this... same annoyance as the MSI GS65... bleh...Terreos likes this. -

Sigh.. A reversed motherboard?
I guess I lost complete interest in this laptop with that info.. -
-
On a bright note...it does look to be very inexpensive for what it's offering. Maybe G7 level pricing
If the inverted board makes it easier to achieve that it may be a fair tradeoff for some. Maybe the (probably soon to follow) Triton 700 will be a more complete package. -
-
Any news on when the triton 500 (and other RTX 20xx laptops) will start going on order on Amazon?
-
Not yet , but I would also love to know the price, with the inverted MOBO it better be cheaper than the other alternatives or I’m out.

Look at the Triton 500 results...... -
The performance looks pretty good.
With that said, based on the testing that Ultrabookreview has done (link below), the 180W power charger Acer included isn't enough to supply the 2080 max q version of the laptop with the required power under load. As a result, the battery discharges even when plugged in which is terrible and degrades the battery and its life over time.
The Asus Zephyrus GX701 which Ultrabookreview also reviewed comes with an adequately sized charger of 230W for it's 2080 max q version.

180W power supply is terrible on their part, why are they going cheap here?
-
keyboard flex, flimsy lid, I guess im out. I was hoping for more of a razer blade build. Its was hard to tell from the CES pictures. Looks alot like the GS65. Wonder if they colablorated.

Notebookcheck just published their Triton 500 review with the 2080 MQ. Surprisingly, they mention that the 180W charging brick powers the laptop sufficiently.
On the other hand, Ultrabookreview says that during gaming load the battery discharges with the 180W charging brick.
My personal thought is that 180W isn't enough as every other 2080 MQ laptop ships with a 230W charger but now I'm not certain...
Thoughts?

Personally after the flipped motherboard and now the small psu I have no interest in buying from acer again. -
Does anyone know if the 2060 model has nvidia optimus and if its dual channel ram? https://smile.amazon.com/Acer-Preda...TF8&qid=1550658625&sr=8-3&keywords=triton+500

$2499.99 (16GB 512GB) is cheaper than I thought but they have a 2999.99 (32GB 1TB)Last edited: Feb 23, 2019 -
is it possible to install Optimus yourself?
-
Based on the Acer's rep answer to a question on the Amazon page for the 2060 version, they state that it does have optimus.

I'm thinking $1,800 for a 2060, 16gb ram and a 512gb SSD is pretty low compared to say the RB 15 with the same specs for $500 more at $2,300. -
RTX 2060 Triton 500 arrived 2 days ago. quick review:

For owners that actually own this laptop, how loud do the fans get when gaming? Temps?
-
-
Did you try undervolting? If so did it help with temps?
Is the 180W power supply sufficient? Some reviews say it is some don’t .
Have you run into any issues power throttling? -
-
Are the Max fans overly loud? Can’t wear headphones.
I need to be on alert when on my laptop for home and at work and hate excessively loud fans. -
-
Saw someone with the 2080 Max-Q SKU claim they had an option to able enable hybrid graphics mode ( MSHybrid") in the BIOS.
Can one of you good people confirm that it's there, and if it actually will enable Optimus for you?IKAS V likes this. -
MSHybrid mode is there but haven’t tried it yet.
Just got my Predator 500 from MicroCenter after they had $300 off the RTX 2080MQ model, they also have the RTX 2060 model for $100 discount.
Sorry for the crappy picture but only had my iPad around .Attached Files:

Got the 2060 version today with the 1TB of SSD space. It surprised me, the temps with a good undervolt are decent (between 78c and 85c depending on the cores and games but this is the range I am in after hours of gaming). I use the max overclock mode for the GPU and the plus side is that the fancurve is a bit more aggressive as well so the temps are actually lower than standard mode. No clue how to permanently enable it though, after each reboot I have to re-enable it).
The build quality is decent it seems but not a tank like my AW15R3 which actually died yesterday thanks to a short after replacing the webcam -___-. -
Yup, temps are great with undervolting , I’m also pleasantly surprised how quiet this laptop is when gaming even with the RTX 2080MQ. I have yet to play anything too demanding but with the games I did try CPU temps never cracked 80c and GPU temps temps were in the low 60’s.
I also use a laptop cooler like I do for every laptop and struggle to hear the laptop fans over the cooler fans.
I went to Microcenter like I usually do a couple times a year having gift cards to spend never thought I’d walk out of there with a Triton but with $300 off I said I’ll give it a shot and return it if I didn’t like it , so far it looks like I’m keeping it. -
Just curious, I left my adapter in the laptop after turning it off, but removed the plug from the wall socket. When I turned the laptop on this morning the battery was at 76%. Does the PSU drain the battery if it is not plugged into a wallsocket?
Never had htis with my Alienwares.
edit: might be on eof the periphals i left in, didnt this laptop support some form of charging when off?Last edited: Apr 6, 2019 -
I believe it does but not sure what sure what plug does that.

The only thing that worries me with this laptop is the longevity of the hinges. -
Unless you man handle your laptop the hinges should be fine.

The GS72VR is notorious for hinges issues, havent really seen cases for the GS65 yet, but still that worries me slightly. The hinges are so tiny, it kinda depends though, where is it mounted on, is it a plastic mounting plate in the screenlid itself or a metal mounting plate. The hinges in the laptop base itself are mounted into a magnesium frame. -
I have the 2080 version and it's actually quite awesome. I tried a Razer (it was returned; had issues and the price was just... not worth the issues of trying to get it replaced), tried the Aorus as a cheap replacement and it was... incredibly loud and prone to overheating so bad that it was stuck at 800mhz within 20m of trying to play a game and would take an hour or more to cool down enough to get back to regular speed. It was stuck at 90 degrees or hotter, even with an undervolt.
The triton I've had doesn't meet the speed the Aorus (with a 2070 non-mq hit) initially, but the Aorus couldn't even maintain that in regular use or 3dmark stress testing.
The triton is also -way- quieter than any of the above machines. Overall I'm very impressed by it.piteris2, hmscott and Brightwood like this. -
-
Performance wise the triton is just as fast as the razer for games, runs a lot cooler too. I was able to do a -.140 undervolt and my triton is staying about 65-70C with “turbo” on and with turbo off (more like a 2070 with it off) the fan never revs full speed and the machine stays quiet compared to anything else I’ve tried.
I’d say the triton or Lenovo y740 15” is the best option out there... I only ended up with the triton because of Lenovo’s inability to ship. If anything I’d say the 2060 triton is the best bang for buck out there with one of the best build qualities.
The only major negative is if you intend to open it up for after market upgrades... it would be very easy to do something wrong and kill the machine. -
I just got one of these from Best Buy, need to go pick it up from the store tomorrow. Anybody have any thoughts on replacing the stock paste with liquid metal? I have a tube of conductonaut left from my disastrous attempt to delid my old desktop.
-
Now if you're going to add more memory, add an m2 drive sure... but just to replace the stock paste? I wouldn't do it for that.
CPU on mine never even hits 80C unless I use "turbo", but there isn't a game out there that requires that unless I hook up to a 4k display and try to max everything out. Even then I haven't seen the CPU or GPU get into the 90s even after hours of use with games or photo work (26mp raw photo editing). -
-
I've just got mine and so far I'm very impressed. With turbo on and a slight overclock, I've got a score of 7908 on Time Spy which I'm really impressed with. Also got a 1tb Samsung T5 external SSD for storage.
