I have to get the fan part ordered soon, I can't have my computer crap out on me this week... just my luck.
I found the correct fan/heatsink assembly for 50 bucks + shipping brand new. You can't get the fan alone.
Here are some pictures of my computer. I need you guys to tell me if you foresee any troubles in my replacing this myself... There are some screws to remove and it looks like it should come right off... I'm not sure if the heatsink is attached directly to the processor or what other kind of goobly-gosh there is in there... it would be nice if it was an easy swap.
I need an answer ASAP, I need to order the part.

I can't see the whole assembly but it looks straightforward. Remember to remove the screws according to their numbering to prevent any sort of tortion forces.

So remove 3, then 2, then 1... and replace with 1, then 2, and then finally 3?
EDIT - Okay, I just ordered the fan/heatsink... had to ship from Canada for 15 bucks, should be here on Friday if all goes well (let's hope). I know it's useless, but I'm going to express my frustrations:
Those numbered screws on the triangle thing look weird... that spacer/washer thing, is it connected to the board? -

Anything else I know know about heatsinks before I remove and reinstall the new one? Are they attached to the processor in any way, or anything like that?
-
From my experience putting together desktops, I would assume that it's just some thermal compound between the heatsink and the chip, but it's just a guess.
I thought some people had taken the fan off to put arctic silver thermal compound in (rather than whatever ACER uses) but I'm not sure if they did, or that's just other acer machines. -

Hmmm... is that like some gooey stuff? Can I reuse what's on there?
-
No. You have to put new one. You might prefer getting one of the thicker ones that last longer (Arctic Ceramique for example). I dont; think you need to spend more money for the paste.

They have some of that stuff at Radioshack... I'll pick it up when I get my stuff in the mail!
Any tips for installation... I'm not experienced in computer repair in any way. -

So I should scrape off the old thermal paste and replace it with a dab of Artic Silver? Or should I just put a dab of Artic Silver over the old stuff? -

Grr I hate this! I'll be extra careful.
Stupid Acer fan thing. -
u dont really need to be extremely careful...
just dont spill the arctic silver to ur mobo... ;p
use it to all 3 chipset that u have..
make sure u dont apply to much...
its kinda troublesome to clean it... ^^ -
