When splitting a drive make sure that you have at least the amount of free space +1gb you're going to give the new drive. I've been using Partition Magic for years now and I also used it to partition my Acer laptop. There's always a slight risk that something might go wrong but when following the wizards it normally works like it should. It is recommended though that you split the drive when it's empty, that way there is no risk in losing any data.

When I got my notebook, one of the first things I did was to reorganize the disk space using Partition Magic and convert everything to NTFS (except the hidden partition). Had no problems. I kept the hidden partition on the HD but reduced its size. I'm not sure if it would still work, but since I can always reinstall everything from the Acer Recovery discs, I'm not concerned about it.

I use partition magic all the time, used it 5 minutes ago. I never backup my data or use an empty drive. I use it to partition my drive with all the data intact. It never let me down yet, so touch wood :).

    Highly recommended.

yeh its pretty safe to use. I merged my backup partition into my main one and changed from FAT32 to NTFS

The only time you need to back up your data is when you have lost it and want it back. ;)

Partition Magic is OK. Acronis True Image is arguably a better product.

My vote goes for Partition Magic too. Been using it for a long time and never had problems.

As well as create and resize paritions I assume you can delete them and allocate that space to other partitions?

My 'hidden' Media Direct partition is 78 MB with 71 MB free, so could I use PM to reduce the size of it and allocate the free space to another partition?
