Hello, i've been looking at some threads about upgrading the 7738g that has a T6600 to a Q9000 and i have some questions, i didnt want to revive those old threads so im making a new one,
the question is probably mostly for "Meaker", since he was giving good info about itbut anyone who has upgraded one would be nice.
The question is the following, i have a 7738G which comes with a c2d T6600 2.2ghz and a GT130m (MB bios 2.12 (09/18/2009)), and im looking forward to upgrade it to a q9000, i was looking for this ones on ebay
Intel Core 2 Quad Mobile Q9000 2.00GHz/6M/1066MHz SLGEJ CPU laptop Processor
1) i saw in some posts about some version of the Q9000 not having a temp sensor or something, is the SLGEJ ok? seems to be the only one on ebay.
2) Do i need to change the heatsink when swapping the processors? do this heatsink vary from the c2d 7738g and the quad 7738g?
3) Do i need a 120w charger? i have a 90w 19v 4.7a but i think some said that it wont charge the battery with a 90w (as far as i know some 7738G even come with a 60w charger), but is the change really necessary or just recommended for some reason?
4) Do the bios support this processor? i saw some posts about bios 1.X and i somehow have 2.12 since i bought it.
5) What are the common temps for the quad on this laptop? i have 45 idle / 72 tops with the T6600.
6) My laptop is lasting up to 3hs with this T6600, i saw there is difference TDP so im assuming it obviusly wont last the same, but is just a little more hungry or will kill the battery really fast?
7) Finally i think i saw something about checking if the PSU can handle the Q9000, is that so? cuz i will only know when i take it apart in that case
Thanks!!

1) OEM versions have no issues, its the ES series.
2) Yes they vary, I would highly recommend the quad heatsink.
3) Yes you will want the 120 adaptor, it will plug in and work the same way.
4) It should, as far as I can tell both versions use the same motherboard (you can check to see if there are missing phases around the CPU socket (sit under the wireless card).
5) Can't remember lol, not high with a Q9000.
6) You will want the high capacity battery (14.8 volts).
7) It needs to be 120W
Also I would go for an ES Q9200 rather than the Q9000 which is a pretty pointless move, but an overclockable (using thottlestop) Q9200 makes a lot more sense at 3ghz.
The ultimate 7738G which requires no case mods contains:
1920x1080 screen
Q9200/QX9300 CPU
4GB DDR3 PC8500 CL5 or 8GB DDR3 PC8500 CL6
HD6770M 1GB GDDR5
256GB or 512GB SSD
Bluray optical drive
Intel 6300 or bigfoot 1103 wireless
120W power brick -
Hey, thanks for the reply.
1)
i was looking on ebay, ones like this
Intel SLGEJ Core 2 Quad Mobile Q9000 2GHz 1066MHz CPU Microprocessor Socket P | eBay
that would work fine, right?
And u recommend one like this (Altought i see this is ES series, which is not fine since as i understand, this has no TEMP sensor, right? but i cant see any not ES on ebay)
New Intel Core2 Quad Mobile Q9200 2.40GHz ES CPU | eBay
or maybe this if i cant find any q9200
Intel Core 2 Quad Mobile Q9100 2.23GHz QGMU CPU | eBay
as u can see im trying to keep it under 100usd
in case i use the standard heatstink it might be better to go with the q9000/q9100?
2) Uhm, i cant find anywhere a heatsink for 7738G, is it the one that holds the VGA+CPU and connects to the fan or is it something different? where did u bought it?
Would it work fine with this one in case i cant get hold of one or it will basically melt lol
6,7) i have a battery of 14.8v, 4.6a, 4800mah, 71w thats the original.
Looks like i will need the 120w then, what i just dont get is, did they sell the Quad 7738G with a 120w adapter? all i see in the acer specs are 70w and 90w :S
Oh, since u know a lot about this notebooki never could see or change the FAN RPM speeds on the CPU/VGA, AIDA64 reports CPU fan 100% (nothing about RPM) and no way of controling it (tried with speedfan and some others), it isnt possible to control the speed, right?

Can't control it i'm afraid.
The heatsink module, you can see the different part numbers in the FRU.
Yes quads shipped with a 120W adaptor, though there are 3rd party ones such as coolermaster that would work just fine.
QAVR is the best Q9200 IIRC, if you dont go for that then dont bother going quad, and get a faster dual core instead. -
Hi there!
May be someone knows the part number of heatsink for QUAD - I lost mine) -

Just got today HD6770m for my acer 7738g but when card is in I have only 3 beeps and nothing more.... any suggestions?
