I don't know if all 5740s have the same LCD but mine is AU Optronics AUO22EC- the same that's used in Aspire 5942G and 5542G and possibly others.

well I will only have the guts to open it just before I confirm the buy, there is a good reseller in tokyo where I am right now but unfortunatly the full hd B156HW01 V.5 is out of stock. still I need to confirm if the distance of the connection is the same as the AU Optronics AUO22EC, do you know where I can check that, I mean can we trust the connector is in the same place for all 15.6 models of AU?

Don't most if not all Acer models only have a single DVI connector so that limits screen replacement resolution to below and not including 1600x900? I recall someone knowledgeable about this stating something like that.

It's called a single LVDS and limits the resolution to approximately 1400x900.

Well that's worse ain't it? meaning since it's a 16:9 panel, he can't really fit anything more than a 1366x768 in there.

Basically 1366x768 and 1280x800 are the max for the single LVDS usually.

    The only options are to:

    A) Modify your existing cable by buying a similar one and moving the wires over (only possible on one type of cable).

    B) Find a similar cable with both channels.

This is of course when you have confirmed that the signals for the second channel are properly routed to the connector. While this was the case for some models in the Acer line, it may not be the case for your particular model.

No routing to the connector would mean that you have to find the pads for the signal and route your own cables. Quite nice hobby work, which you could start with obtaining the circuit diagrams and study them.

But I see a third possibility: to find a 1440x900 (16:10) panel with single channel LVDS. They are not easy to find because the specs will usually not reveal this.

    Good luck, anyway !

Yeah but a 16:10 panel wont fit a 16:9 machine.

Heh, but we are talking about some serious hobbyist work, aren't we ? Like soldering test pads ...

With the use of a fine file, a sharp knife and super glue, you just *may* be able to refit the display. This is definitely a kind of a project that I'm looking into, although on a different machine.

I would simply buy new laptop but... it's your choice :p

Much more fun would be sacrificing one of the USB ports and installing a special layer on your screen for turning it into BIG TOUCHSCREEN! :) Available on e-bay.

Actually, no sacrifice would be needed, as there are ports available on the motherboard. I doubt though that a touch screen would feel usable with the opened computer, since the keyboard is in the way.

    ---

About buying a new computer instead: well, since a new panel costs less than a 100 USD, and a new computer of reasonable quality consts about ten times as much, I see that this is indeed a kind of an upgrade that may extend the usability of a computer of this kind with mild load on my economy.

I did my research very sloppily before I bought my Acer. I guess I fell for the looks and the feel of the package, so I never looked deeply into the possible upgrade paths. Then I changed some of its hardware, and now I have a modded beauty. Selling a modded computer is not a great idea, since people would be too anxious to buy one without a valid warranty and they would pay too little, which means that keeping the computer is the best option.

Besides; if modding computers is your hobby - I know mine is - then you do not seek the "simplest" ways. It is sometimes time consuming, or expensive, or both, but you do it for fun of it :D
