I bought this laptop yesterday, and im really happy with it. 3 gigs of ram, 160gb harddisk and 256/1256mb hd 2400 xt graphics.. Hovever it only came with a 1.9Ghz amd tk-57 processor. Would it be possible to exchange that with a 2.4 ghz t8300 processor, or will my laptop meltdown :?
-
It's not possible to upgrade AMD processor to Intel...
Read this thread. -
Ok i read it, but i have a athlon and not a turion.. Can i upgrade my athlon to a faster turion then?
-
Straight answer no.
the motherboard/bios might not support the new processor. And even IF it did, the cpu is soldered into the motherboard so can only be extracted with great risk and difficulty (if at all).
You're stuck with what u got. It should be sufficient for office work/web browsing. -
Theyve had luck changing:
acer 3680
aspire 5315
Aspire 5720G -
Hmm should be socket S1...and upgradable..even Turion should fit but I'm not sure if will work..
-
Oh.. Im sure its S1, and i also think that some extensa's come with a turion.. But is it dangerous to exchange for a processor with 0,5ghz higher clock speed?
-
Well according to this thread you can install in your socket S1 any socket S1 CPU..including Turion.. now the question will be the BIOS..
-
Ok, I dont know much about AMDs but after a small research on ur laptop, I think you should be able to upgrade to the following..AMD Turion 64 X2 dual-core mobile technology TL-66/TL-64/TL-60/TL-56/TL-52....Not very sure though but the acer extensa does show up with these CPUs....so upgrade the BIOS to the latest version (preferably to an upgrade available after the 10th of July, 07)....and trying getting a cheap one first since you are maybe the first one to upgrade this laptop....!! But try this at your own risk..
If u wanna go a step higher to the TL-68 and U are able to get your hands on a cheap one, look for a BIOS upgrade that was released this year..!! -
You might want to bookmark this ftp if you want to upgrade later, BIOS for extensa 5420 ftp://ftp.work.acer-euro.com/notebook/extensa_5420/bios/, the latest is from this month.
-
Well i just bought it
but here in denmark, its not acer who stands for the support.. its some supermarket, and my even my grandma could get HER MONEY REFOUND after she had destroyed her desktop by using the "brute force" power switch loads of times... And the guys there have none to relatively small tech knowledge, so i if it isn't physically damaged i guess i can get a new.. But its a great laptop, so i hope it works.. But now to my unanswered question:
Will a 2,4ghz cpu produce too much heat :? (Now its only 1.9) -
No idea, but you can undervolt the processor for less heat. Check The Undervolting Guide. Check my previous post for BIOS upgrade(if you need one) if you haven't seen it yet.
-
I did a bios upgrade just now, but i can't seem to find a single turion processor for sale in Denmark on the net :S
But thanks for the help, "acer unofficial support crew" rocks! -
you might have to check ebay for a seller who ships turion cpus worldwide..!! but i would advice u not to go above the TL-66 since your laptop does not show up with a TL-68..!!
-
-
I am not sure, because your laptop doesnt show up a TL-68, I would advise not to go for it
I just found the user guide for your laptop and I ll put up a screenshot of the specs page....
since they are identical you will not notice any difference in performance....but the TL-68 was released 6 months after the the TL-66 in Dec. 07, so cant say if your BIOS would support that....since you have so much difficulty in buying a CPU I would say go for the safest option, i.e. TL-66 if u want to max out your laptop..

Oh, i meant that i could live with the slightly slower tl-66, i should have expressed myself more clearly, sorry
-
0.1GHz will hardly make a difference....but the jump from 1.9GHz and 512Kb Cache to 2.3GHz and 1MB cache will make a difference
....check this for a list of turion and athlon mobile cpus....
and your laptop wont overheat at all....maybe upgrading to a better cpu may keep the temps down..
-
Thats way too cool
. I just hope i can find a local reseller, 'cause my dad will never -ever buy anything off ebay.. But i guess i can ask the people in a hardware store to import the cpu from somewhere, it must be possible.
-
Yeah....go for it but do have a look at the motherboard and cpu socket to assure yourself that you will be able to do the upgrade without ruining anything....!! and buy some Arctic Silver 5 and Articlean....to apply a thermal paste on the cpu and clean the heatsink which would help in making ur cpu work much cooler than usual..!!
Good Luck..!! -
@creeco you do know that this upgrade will void you warranty right?
-
Hahahaha....gone through all that to know he will be voiding his warranty..
dont worry if it doesnt work out..try it when the warranty runs out.. -
Yeah well..just in case
..and to avoid posts like "You guys screwed me up"..
...and better later then never -
They don't hire private detectives to see if you have voided your warrenty, they just look at your pc for half a minute too see if it has any physical damage.. I mean, they don't own the shop so why should they care if they loose 700$ or so..
Im 99% sure that this is the case.
Anyways, i really hope that i can find a turion tl-66 somewhere.. -
i know of a young lady who sent her laptop back with an upgraded WIFI card
they claimed the card caused a MB failure and refused to fix her PC..
so keep old CPU or any other upgrades you make,,, so if you have to ship back... your PC appears un-modified
bigO -
Great idea big-o, ill do that if anything happens
-
just wanted you to know it's good to keep those OLD parts till the warranty runs out.... and then you may need a spare part some day.. who knows
later,
