Yes, congrats!
In hindsight, I didn't read that X-bit link until now. On page 6 of the X-bit review, it says the ASUS A6Rp has an RX480 northbridge. The http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_ATI_chipsets page says that the RX480 supports FSB up to 1000 MHz. So your possibilities are almost limitless, depending on how much you want to spend on a CPU!

hehehehe.... im so exited with my new core 2 duo... i got this CPU for only $20 bucks in my friend.. hahahaha... JACKPOT>!!!

Hey guys, hope somebody can help a poor sole, after realising my board is a 940 board, after also buying the t5200 chip
and the help you all gave me, i had decided well if i cant upgrade the chip then at least i can upgrade ram and OS to ultimate... nooooooo, i formated the whole drive and now my 3680 dosn't boot sometimes because i formated the D2D recovery partition like a fool... i didnt know about this till it was wiped and come accross the problem at bios...
So Biggest request EVER from me to save my new laptop, can somebody please, please, upload either the recovery cd to get the partition back, or copy the recovery partition. please i am begging you all, whoever can help...
please reply on here or [email protected].
Your help like previous help is very much appreciated -
-
Vistar, i dont think that your problem in booting is due to the removed hidden partition. Maybe the problem is the new ram... if i remember, in this model there were problems when putting a second ram stick, solved by newer bios release. If you still didnt, update your bios to 1.3505 or better. Anyway, to be sure that the new ram is the problem, try to boot with only a ram stick.
About the processor... you can still go with a T1350, still better than the Celeron, running quicker and cooler with a hour more of battery life. -
No i tried without the new ram (kept the original 512MB stick in) i have the 1.3505 bios, this only has happened after i completely wiped mt hard drive (and it wiped the recovery partition too!) aparently, you would have booting trouble if the partition table was erased (which it is)... its not even booting to disc, it freezes when i try to enter bios settings, sometimes the acer logo upon bios is distorted/messed up when i press F2, its under warranty still but i has snapped a screw holder and a small piece of plastic behind the battery so may be void nowcheers acer your ace... not
-
Please will somebody help me??? i need either the MBR Partition (copied using norton ghost or similar) or a copy of the ACER 3680 Recovery disc and that will create the partition....
please i wouldnt ask if i didn't really need it... imagine your laptop never/or randomly coming on, just because of acer's Master Boot Record has been wiped.. its not nice... especially when its 2 weeks old...please help someone....
-
Since you're already here, didn't you make a recovery disc after you bought it 2 weeks ago and before you tried upgrading the OS a few days ago? How do you know just any 3680 recovery disc will work? I created an Acer Factory Default Disc on DVD a day after I got the 3680-2686. It would have taken up too many CDs. Send me a Private Message -DON"T REPLY TO THIS POST- if you want to try it.
Why can't you contact Acer tech support since they specialize in this kind of thing and it's only 2 weeks old? -
Krazy. got another link you or others could find useful
http://www.eserviceinfo.com/equipment_mfg/acer_43.html -
Well, it's about time....
I finally have a Core 2 Duo laptop...
thanks Krazy and Hoggie for the inspiration..
thanks to wac for clarifying my socket mysteries..
thanks to you all,
bigozone
i can't believe the change in CPU temps my HDD is now as hot as the outter core, and neither core are above 96f,, or 36c/33c with a hdd temp of 33c.... man this is so sweet. -
edited @ 4:20
this T5450 has been in for about 7 or 8 hours.... and has hardly stopped. The temps keep dropping, i can't wait till i get my Arctic Sliver 5. How can a cpu run @ less than body temp?? I love it.

Just make sure it's not a GL960, which is only good to 533 MHz FSB and DDR2 533. I guess the fact that your FSB is running at 667 confirms you don't have the GL960.
If you feel adventurous, you can try a T5470 or T7100! -
Enjoy -

and manufacture mfg, date: 0704 3684nwxci. maybe is that mean my chipset is i943gml. can i upgrade my laptop core2duo T5500 SL9SH? i need your help, thanks you all. -
Take of the panel where the ram is kept on the bottom of your 3680, and give us the code on the above ram slot. Then we can determine which Chipset you actually have.
If it turns out that you have a 943GML then you can pick the T5500. -
it turns out that the celeron codes IE 3xxM,4xxM,5xxM all use a different chipset.
the 3 series only needs the 940gml
the 4 series needs the i943gml to run corectly
and the 5 series has th 965 chipset which is a bonus as it has the faster FSB.
was looking into board model manufacture dates as well.and in some case's just a chipset driver update will change some from a 940 to a i943. -
i will look into panel ram, i hope that will wrote MB.AZL06.003 Main Board ZR1.SATA.943GML.UMA. so my chip set is i943gml. but T5500 has 4 model, which one will compatible with 3680. because i am worry doesn't work with my laptop. please help me friend to research core2duo T5500.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Core_2_microprocessors -
"SL9SH (B2)" That is the one that you want. Just so you know that is one that no one has actually tested yet, but it should be compatible.
-
Honest ive done loads of research on this, ask Krazy
oi krazy hows things mate ? -
hoggie can you give me the link to update driver chipset a i943 to a i945. my driver chipset version8.3.0.1009 , thanks hoggie, thanks krazyphire for this tread

i will do that now....check back later
thread's been ticking over alright, Krazy seems to look after its self now
busy though -

Hello, new member here, just want to say hi and thanks for all the helpful info in this thread (even if it is a little large, have read it all though)
I recently bought my very 1st lappie 3 days ago im in malayasia though uk is my home.
Just got it, cause it was quite cheap, and didnt really need it for much other than surfing and basic apps. I save the gaming for the beast although thats back home
Anyways I got a aspire 4315
cele 550 2G
intel 965 chipset
512 RAM blah blah blah
Now what i wanted to ask is, if cpuz reports as GM965 can this be taken as the case. because in the thread there is a lot of talk about mis-reporting. I dont really want to take it apart as its quite new, and was hoping theres a way to find out w/o doing that, although from ive read that may be impossible.
Also the bios ver is reported as 1.09, would this need to be updated to bios on 1st page to allow use of a c2d or can they just be dropped in to 965.
Also is the bios on 1st page useable with the celeron, cause i will probs get acer shop to do update and ill do chip upgrade when i get home.
Cheers -
the 965 only supports Intel® Core™2 Duo processor T7700, T7500, T7300, T7100.
but what ram do you have ?
we use pc-wizard to check all the internals. a link to the download page is on the first post of this thread.
so download and paste the results here.
Cheers

Sorry about the size, sure you probs dont need all this but thought id put it all in.
As you can see bought a 1 gig kingston stick today cause 512 on XP just dont cut it.
Cheers -
Your current bios seems to be the most recent so stick with that. Just like Hoggie said you should be able to drop one of those high-end T7XXX into your Aspire 4315. -
Sweetness thx for the help krazy.
On a different note read on this thread that 1.5 Gig memory should open x3100 avalible to max 384mb. Thing is mine still shows 128mb is this normal?
Just thought id throw that in there -
Chances are your bios is set to make the X3100 operate on a dynamic memory platform. In which case the it will increase the memory when needed, but otherwise it will cruise at 128MB.
I would recommend upgrading to at least 2G of RAM because once you upgrade the CPU your RAM will become the bottleneck for achieving max performance. -
Yeah will be doing that ASAP, its nice to have the 667 fsb and memory support. Strange thing was the 667 mem cost less than the 553 over here, go figure.
Im of to do a bit of reasearch and see if I can but in a discret grachics card, having read the severe thread on if the drivers can eek out any more performance from the x3100 im thinking it might be the way to go.
Good work krazy and hoggie.
Cheers -
-
Yeah i know but was hoping there might be a free PCI express slot, but its looking pretty unlikely. Still though cant complain I didnt even think that such big cpu jumps were possible without a different motherboard.
Well happy this laptops got a bit of future profing, as im generally used to new chip architecture new motherboard. Looks like intel have really got there acts toghether this round, can see them owning AMDs ass for about the same amount of time that AMD owned theres last round.
Sometimes wars are a good thing. -
B1indspot, I have 2 965 based acers and have upgraded both to the T5450,
hoggie is correct in a sense,, according to the intel website the T7XXX series is the only ones listed as being compatible with the 965 chipset, but from my experience a SOCKETP T5230, T5450, T5550, or T5750 should also work...
if you run into a problem with the upgrade CPU not fitting the socket PM me..
i had one laptop with the purple socket it should have, but the other had a white SOCKETM style interface (which i had to slightly modify w/ a hot thumb tack).... but now both are running CORE2DUO T5450's and are soo much cooler that that slow celeron was..
thanks to Krazy, Hoggie and wac for all the info and help.

http://download.intel.com/design/mobile/datashts/31674505.pdf
just going to take a look at the T7xxx chips
what did you do to the chip to make it fit BIG -
if your chipset supports 800 FSB would we be pushing our luck with some of the higher T7xxx's.
-
this intel link is well handy if you use a tabbed browser.
http://processorfinder.intel.com/Default.aspx
also found that some of the c2d use far less power than the celery -
cool info hoggie,,
i didn't wanna post that socket hack on the main page... now that you've read it i'd say you understand why. (lol)
i plan on going up to a T7600 when i can afford it.... but i may wait till they are on Ebay for $100, but for now anymore $$$ out of pocket is outta the question.... it's time to kick back and enjoy...
BTW my other neighbor just got DSL,, now it's on both sides of me FOR FREE..
i even loaned them a wireless router so they would have the benifits of NAT.
later,

ive got about 4 pc's to fix.god they bore me.
nice move with the router. -
Hello everyone I have joined these forums just for this thread! I own an Aspire and have scoured the net trying to find out about upgrading the CPU which lead me here. From the looks of it I should be able to do it with ease from all of your findings.
I have an Aspire 3680-2682 (celeron m 440 1.86 Ghz) and have the proper bios version v1.3505 for the T5200 or the T5300 intel processor. However, I have found that it is almost impossible to find these processors anymore except on ebay which are very hard to come by and I do not use ebay nor really trust it.
I have read a previous post pertaining to information about the T5500 or even low end T7xxx series will fit this Aspire? Is this correct? I really want to upgrade my processor as my Celeron isn't cutting it for me. So am I correct that there are newer processors that I could install without a problem on my system?
Oh yes, I remember someone asking what is left on their laptop to upgrade in this thread, I say graphics, look up the ASUS GX station. Its an express card slot powered GeForce 7900 that outputs to an external monitor. I bet if you got a video converter to USB you could funnel its video back to the laptop to really make these modded laptops play some serious games. It hasn't released yet and a release date hasn't been stated yet, but when it does it seems like it will be something worth getting! -
with a bit of searching through this thread you will find all you need to know for your upgrade.
finding the T5xxx CPU is hard as ive been searching all over the web for over three months and have still to find a good supplier of these chips.
if you manage to find one please post a link back here.
good luck,
Phil -
Hey hoggie, can you please get me a link to the 3680 disassembly guide?
-
I am currently to involved in college right now to concentrate on this upgrade so I have to wait a month till my classes let out. Anyhow, I currently have linux(Ubuntu 7.10) installed on my Aspire 3680 and pc wizard is only for windows OS, would it be safe to assume that I have the standard chipsets that have been listed for the 3680-2682? Or should I install Windows on it and run PC wizard first? I would love to assume as it will take me till May to switch to Windows. I am afraid that if I wait till May for this, all the T5200/T5300 chips will be gone!
Is there anyway to make use of the T5xxx series 64bit capabilities on the Aspire? Or does the motherboard not support it? -
on it Krazy
aspire mate. open the ram bay, there you will find a sticker.this sticker has the model number of your mother board.
and one more thing aspire do your work at collage, and no slacking ok
Upgraded Acer 3680 Celeron CPU to a T5300!
