I see a nice overall boost in startup/shutdown and with applications startup, for her it really doesn't matter that much. As long as she can cruise the net, access her music, pictures and get to her email, she's happy! Hell, after 22 years married, I know she would have perfered to take the $40 I spent on the cpu and had her nails done! The upgrade was more for me (love messin with this computer stuff), you know, us guys always want more power!!! Anyway, now she has a better laptop for a ridiculous inexpensive price.

Thanks, Theo. She was acutally pretty cool about every thing, mostly because I pulled it off. I think she would love me more if I could watch a whole episode of "Dancing with the Stars" with her, but somehow I just can't!!! :(

cud u help me with the cpu upgrade pls....
is it necessary to have the same cpu multiplier, FSB speed and TDP while upgrading to the new processor....the TDP for my current processor is 27W and that for a core 2 duo is 34W....will it affect my Laptop if I install a cpu with a higher TDP....
    cheers

angad1608, read all the thread and you'll see that having a T5200 or a better Merom cpu in the 3680 works without problems, in facts right now i am writing with a 3680 containing a T5200 ! The only thing you have to check is the chipset, be sure to have the i943. The easier way is checking the stick on the ram bay under the laptop. Read fully all the thread and you'll have all the answers you need.

Congrats and thanks for the entertaining story! My wife gave me the same looks and attitude when she saw her 3680 in pieces on the kitchen table, all three times. First was the T5300 upgrade, second was looking for the 943 chip markings, and third was the T5600 upgrade. I can also add "American Idol", "Oprah's Big Give", and "Big Brother" to that list for my wife.

I'm patiently waiting for another Acer sale at Circuit City so I can buy one for my dad and upgrade it too to a C2D. It will be one of the newer styles where the CPU is also accessible via the RAM cover. They currently have a 4720 with a 1.66GHz T2330, 160GB HD, 1GB RAM, webcam, DVD burner, and Vista Home Premium for $500, but I'm hoping it will drop some more.

Alright, cheers for the reply 'letmealone', I do have a i943/940gml as stated by CPUz....but was thinking that my FSB speed is 533MHz and CPU multiplier 12x....can I put a processor with a higher speed and a higher multiplier....and will the motherboard support it ....bios is not an issue....although I will be going through all the 56 pages tonite....!!

Yes you can upgrade to better stuff (which is the definition of an upgrade :D).
My original Processor was the Celeron M [email protected] and 12x multiplier. The T5300 which I upgraded to has a 1.73GHZ clock speed, and a 13x core multiplier.

As soon as we confirm your mobo w/ your ram bay code we shall know if the mobo supports a Core 2 Duo. Which I think it can.

Hey guys, I have another question. Is the Aspire 3680-2682 motherboard 64bit capable? The new processor I will upgrade to(T7200) is 64bit compatible but would the motherboard support the use of 64bit to enable me to install a 64bit OS? Or for the laptop being what it is, is it even worth it if possible to go 64bit if it possible? Or would driver compatibility from Acer stop me from a 64bit system if the hardware can support it?

Yes the motherboard is 64-bit compatibile. There is a link on the front page which will in most cases answer all your questions. :).

is there much 64b stuff out there to justify the upgrade.
from what ive been reading 64b is like flogging a dead horse.
    Driver issues
    software issues
    but its a choice thing.
good luck with the upgrade :D
    Phil :D

a bit old but still a good read (im researching the question for you).

micr$oft are saying vista64 has better driver support than the old xp64bit so all the old troubles may have been sorted out,but don't hold your breath.

Thanks! I am just concerned that Acer drivers will not be supported on a 64bit system. I checked the first page and didn't find anything on 64bit drivers.

I have a wifi card in my 64bit desktop(Linksys WMP54G) that will not allow the installation of the only driver available for it by the manufacturer which is 32 bit. (I still don't understand why they won't support that card for 64bit as it is a fairly new piece of technology but thats besides the question here.) I guess once I install the new processor I can test the drivers with a 64bit Vista disk. If all the hardware works, my laptop can last even longer! If 64bit is supported by the drivers then I will get 4GB of ram then. (I here that 4GB on a 32bit system can cause the system to run slower as it doesn't know how to deal with the memory addressing so I planned on getting 2GB for a 32bit system) I plan to maximize the life of my Aspire by upgrading as much as possible in it as I want to keep it for as long as the hardware works.

Thanks hoggie for the help and info!

Considering the possible problems with 64bit I guess I will stick with 2GB of RAM and upgrade later if I need it. I have 2GB on my desktop and it seems to be enough.

Originally we thought this was the case, but we have found that 667 FSB is supported by some previously 533 FSB laptops. For example I could upgrade my processor to a T5600 w/ 667 FSB if I wanted to.

I have another Aspire upgrade question,
I am going to upgrade my HDD to a 7200RPM with 16MB cache and am curious if my motherboard supports 3Gbps SATA. I have found that my current Western Digital HDD is only 1.5Gbps. The price difference between a 1.5Gbps and 3Gbps 16MB cache 7200 RPM drive is $50. So I would like to know if I can safely spend that 50 or apply it to my $200 T7200 I found on Amazon.com.

    EDIT:
I almost forgot. I was browsing through the manual for this and it says that the Aspire 3680 should only have the 940GML. The manual is wrong though right because it has been found that my laptop can indeed support the core 2's(T7200)?

RipoffUK: Go for the T5230, T5450, T5550, or T5750, T7600 but pm or try to get a hold of Bigozone because he has the same laptop model as you. Bigozone upgraded to the T5450.

Aspire_3680-2862: You can safely upgrade to a 1.5Gbps 7200RPM. I would apply that money to your T7200 C2D. Right now your CPU is the bottleneck, so upgrading that should come first. Then go for the 7200RPM HDD :).

angad1608: At maximum I'm fairly certain you can upgrade to the T5200. Please give us the mobo number on your rambay so we can double check for you what Chipset you actually have.

    Thanks krazyphire,

I did some research of my own and found that SATA 3Gb/s transfer speeds appeared as far back as late 2005 early 2006 if not earlier. I figure that my laptop made in 2007 should then be equipped with the 3Gb/s speed unless they really skimped on the hardware. However since the hardware they used is 64-bit compatible and capable of 667Mhz speeds I would also assume that the SATA is the higher speed as well. I have already ordered the HDD as of a few minutes ago and paid the extra 50 dollars for the 3Gb/s speed. I know my priority is with the processor, however I will still have the money to upgrade that even though I have already ordered the new HDD and the 2GB of ram(667MHz just in case I have the rare chipset to utilize it). [edit]I choose the order of upgrades this way because I am finishing college and do not have time to swap processors within warranty periods from the seller/store. I do have time though to do these other simple upgrades though.[/edit]

I have decided to go all out on my Aspire 3680-2682 in one go as to maximize its lifespan and not worry about future upgrades. I will get the processor late May and have it installed soon after. The RAM and HDD should be in by mid May. I'll post all of my results back.

And for a final upgrade, I have purchased an APC brand universal laptop battery to extend the life of my battery. Unfortunately my Aspire came with only a 2000mah battery and lasts for about 1h 10m. The battery I purchased is rated for up to 7h of extended life so I hope to get 4-5 extra hours with it.

Thanks again krazyphire for all of your help and thank you to all the others here that have helped out! I also thank hoggie specifically as well for his research that has helped so many of us! If it wasn't for this article here I would have been stuck with a mediocre machine. But soon I will have a laptop that will be able to enjoy using for years to come!

I just stumbled upon an interesting program for download by intel. It's their own chipset identification utility! It requires Windows, so my Ubuntu Aspire isn't able to test it at the moment. This may be able to give more exact chipset numbers to help identify which cpu's your laptop can be upgraded to.

    Hoggie

i know that the people who post here know what they're doing but i'm quite new to this and only know from what i've read on this and other posts.
I know nothing about upgrading a laptop and will probably have to pay an expert to do the upgrade.
i'm trying to find out what posssible changes i can make to my laptop to make it perform better and that it will last me at least 5yrs.

i want to change the CPU.... will the latest 45nm fit?
Ram currently 1 gig with max 2 gig possible...after upgarding the cpu will i be able to add more than 2gig ram?
    HDD currently 80gb 5400rpm...would like 350gb 7200rpm...is this possible?
There is no GPU...is it possible to add one after cpu upgrade?
BTW how do i update the BIOS?

I'm hoping to source all the parts on the internet, could you send me links to the best places to look.

    Thanks

Ripoff. you will have to make sure which socket type you have.

ive just opened another 5315 with a celeron 530 and its a socket m.
my wife's was a socket P celeron 530. so you will have to open the laptop up.

the socket P mother board will support T5450, 667fsb not sure about the socket M ?

socket M its back to the good old T5300

on the first post of this thread, there's a software download for PC Wizard download that and post the motherboard results for us, if you don't want to open any covers.

Hoggie,,, i don't think it's a socketM mainboard,,, it's just a leftover socket... remember me telling you about my socket modification i had to do...

my 5315 came w/ a grey socket instead of a purple one (like most socket Ps)
but after modding the socket by placing a hole where there wasn't one, i was able to fit the socketP CPU in and boot fine... but the socketM processors wouldn't boot even after adding the missing pin hole..

i'd be willing to bet he has a Mainboard just like mine,,, ACER's mainboard manufacturer just used up thier excess socketM sockets knowing that this latop was going to use a CELERON and they saw a way to save a few pennies

    later,
    bigozone

As long as it is the most up to date it should be a drop in upgrade. I would recommend the T5600 simply because I'm not sure on the compatiblity of 3690s with the T7200, and I personally think that the 200MHz difference is negligible.

Though my assumption says that it should be able to drop one in.

    what model is your laptop?
what CPU and Chipset does it contain?? (use CPUZ to gather info, link on first page)

    been a touch busy.

ok if you can get your hands on one A T5300 will drop straight in on your motherboard.
acer parts shows your board with a T5300 in it :D

Hoggie is right the T5200 or T5300 will work with that chipset,, you might want to check for a post i found by another member that is a link to the Acer service guides.. it should be on the first page.. i hope the password still works

    will i be able to reach a t5600 or t7200....the 4mb cache i guess will be useful....yeah..??
nd wat about heat issues....the celeron m had a TDP of 27W whereas these big ones have of about 34W....

if those chips work at all (i'm unsure if they'd even post)... your chipset limits you to 533 FSB you need a 945 chipset to support 667 fsb...

if might be possible to use the T5600 if you have a true 943... it will run at 667 FSB for the CPU,, but the memory bus speed is still limited to 533 by the chipset.

look for posts in this thread around page 38 to 40 by a member named WAC...
i sold him the T5600 and it worked in his machine,,, but even w/ 667Mhz Ram his memory speeds stayed at 533

    Hi

I Have an Acer Aspire 4310.

    Here are my CPU-Z readings.

    Under CPU

    *Intel Celeron M [email protected]
    *Conroe-L
    *Socket 479 mPGA
    *65nm
    *Multiplier : x13.0
    *Bus Speed : 133.3 MHz
    *Rated FSB : 533.4 MHz

    Under Mainboard

    *Manufacturer : Acer
    *Model : Volvi
    *Chipset : i943/940GML
    *Southbridge : 82801GHM(ICH7-M/U)

After reading the entire thread it seems that T5300 Core2Duo will run on my laptop. Same multiplier, Bus Speed and FSB.

    Am I right?

    Thanks!

man, it's good to see someone here who actually does a little research before asking others to spoon feed them an answer... (it can take awhile to go thru 60 pages of good info can't it)

YES you are correct... a T5600 might work as well, but as i stated above you will only get the 667 FSB on the CPU and not on the Ram... but the T5300 will definately work with your system... matching the multipliers doesn't mean as much as not exceeding the MAX multiplier for your mainboard... i think PCWizard told me what my mainboard's max was... it's more important to match up the FSB with one that your board's chipset supports....

943 is limited to 667 FSB & 533 memory,,, (atleast that's been reported by 2 different members)
    945 is limited to 667 FSB & 667 memory..

let us know if you have any more questions??

there is a Service Guide Thread i posted,, you might want to go to ACER's website and download the service guide for your laptop before jumpping in head first....

    hope i've helped ya,
    bigozone

Hey guys, i found this thread and must say wow... BUT i have an Acer Aspire 7112-200 with i940 (i think)and Celeron M420.
CPUZ says i943/940GML und Everest says i940GML...so waht is right??
I think i could only upgrade to a Core Solo T1350, right??? What is with the Bios, i have the newest v1.24, would that be OK, or what i have still to do???

    greets from Germany...
    TB79

or would the celeron M550 be better than the T1350??? But M550 is Socket P...Perhaps the M450...
    which would you take???
