assuming that your BIOS has support for Core2Duo CPUs,, you should be able to upgrade to a Core2Duo T5300,, and if you have a 943chipset a T5600 MIGHT work,,, we've had 2 users have T5600's work in thier laptops,,, but the memory speeds stayed at 533Mhz,,, while the CPU FSB works @ 667!!

but with a 943 a T5300 is definately supported by the Chipset... the only question is does your BIOS have microcode support for MEMROM cpus.. if so you can use a T5300 for sure.... (check the .txt file included w/ the bios flash,, most older laptops had Memrom support added years ago around june 2006)

    i believe the celeron M 550 is actually a socket P cpu

your current CPU is a SOCKET M cpu... so you can't use a celeron M 550...

the core2duo's are your best bet!!!

you sure it's not a 945??? what program are you using to get your chipset info?? is it the most current version of that software...

i use CPUz and PCwizzard... links on page 1

i came across a site on the net that sells processors and they provide specific fans alongwith the processors....at a premium....so does every processor has a specific fan designed for it....??

Not that I know of, I figure that only applies to Desktop processors because they're the most commonly upgraded.

i'm kinda confused by what you are asking... but i'll give it a go anyway!

Each desktop Socket style has it's own method for mounting the heatsink/fan.... but in dealing w/ laptop's each laptop model has it's own specific heatsink and that should not be replaced with anything except the exact same thing unless your notebook manufacturer has more than one type of heatsink available for your exact model... furthermore on laptops the fan doesn't sit on the heatsink,, it has a "pipe" that vents heat to the exhaust port of fan which forces the heat out the back of the laptop...

    hope that helps you,

Thanks for your answer, but i am confused....
if i have only the i940 chipset (Everest: i940GML) i can upgrade to a T5300, for sure???? I thought with the i940 i can only upgrade to T1350!!!!

    Mainboard: Acer Myall2

    PCWizard: Intel i943/940GML
    CPUZ: Intel i943/940GML
    Everest: i940GML

I can not find a .txt file from my bios, but it´s from 15.11.2007, so it could support it, i think???!

    BIOS:
    Hersteller : Phoenix Technologies LTD
    Version : V1.24
    Date : 11/15/2007 (mm/dd/yyyy)
    DMI Version : 2.4

    Acer Manual: 940GML!!!

So i think i have to decide between t1350 (1,86 GHz, 2MB L2 Cache) or the Celeron M450 (2,00GHz, 1MB L2 Cache)! Which would you take?

if your chipset is a 940,, then you are correct the T1350 is the only CPU other than celerons that i have seen any success reported...

wish i could tell you otherwise,, but i think your reseach is rock solid,,,

i must have a gotten a good CPU, my temps almost never hit 50c (right now the cpu cores are 14 & 10c)

so my fan almost never even comes on... and the entire laptop is cool to the touch..

The Proc you used, (C2D 2.2Ghz), is it a T7400? Or something else.

I'll defer to the experts, but my understanding is that the T1350 is the way to go, if only for Enhanced Speedstep support (i.e., better battery life than with the Celeron).

Ok, so I've read about all 62 pages. I have decided to upgrade my processor to the t5200/t5300. I've verified that i have the 943i from the RAM bay and the PC wizard program.

    I've got an aspire 3680-2633 with a celeron 520 m at 1600 mhz

I think that is all the relevant information. What makes me hesitant is that the disassembly seems quite the chore without that hard to find guide, if anyone can email it to me or seed it on bittorrent I would greatly appreciate it.

    Wikipedia says:
    Code:
    945GM Calistoga 82945GM (GMCH) ICH7-M January 2006 Core 2 Duo, Core Duo, Pentium Dual-Core, Core Solo, Celeron M 533 / 667 MHz DDR2 533 / 667 4GB Integrated GMA 950 graphics core

I just reinstalled Vista on my Aspire 3680-2682 and it gave me this little tidbit under the welcome center.
Mobile Intel 945GM Chipset Controller 0

That means I have the capibilities for the 667MHz ram with the 667MHz FSB for the processor! Also says my computer can handle up to 4GB of RAM.

I just updated my HDD to a 7200RPM SATA 3.0 Gb/s with 16MB cache and have installed 2GB of 667MHz RAM(Kingston valueram). It is flying fast just with the celeron! I can only imagine how fast it will be with a Core 2 Duo! I am now debating on if I really want to dismantle this thing when it already runs so nice and fast now. Would the processor speed increase help improve my Gaming graphics score? Its a 3.0 and I would like to get it higher. I wonder I can play some games on this thing now...

Everything is working fine without Acers drivers, so do I really need to install them?

yes a C2D cpu will make a noticable difference over celeron... especially if going up to a 667 FSB & RAM transfer... when you factor in the extra core, the increased L2 cache, the increased bus speeds, and possibly higher CPU opperating speed (depends on CPU choice) you are looking at what will be another step up in performance... as far as VISTA experience scores go,, they should go up a bit... even the intergrated graphics should benifit from the increase in FSB and RAM speeds... how much?? i have no basis to say,,, i 've had VISTA downgraded since long before my CPU upgrade!

and as far as ACER drivers... if everything works the only reason i'd change would be if the manufacturer came out w/ newer versions of the drivers or if the ACER drivers were newer versions..

    hope that helps you

After reading the thread for quite a while, I made the leap and upgraded my 3680-2862 to a Core Duo T2250. I went cheap and got the T2250, actually an engineering sample (ES), from an eBay seller for $26 shipped which is about half of most of the T2250 prices I was seeing and a lot less than the Core2 Duo prices.

The disassembly went fairly easily with the hardest part being getting the little washers back under the heatsink arms. (That and the three undocumented screws.)

Vista recognized the processor right away, though the Device Manager actually shows me as having a Celeron M 440 and a Core Duo T2250 instead of two T2250s. Vista also feels more responsive and seems to handle video playback a lot cleaner.

I haven't had it long enough to comment on CPU temp and battery life.

My personal thanks to all of you who went down this road before me.

    John

Congrats on your successful upgrade.. i'm sure you'll love it more and more over the next few weeks..

i personally am ready to upgrade again and step up to the 800Mhz FSB,,, maybe a T7300 or T7500 whatever i can find in the SocketP line that is not too expensive... might even look at the T8xxx series... they say they run COOL

    once again,,, congrats... and enjoy

Thanks bigozone for the info. I was just curious as to if what I consider bloatware applications like epower management actually amounted to much. Vista still gives me the same battery life as it has before in its estimated battery meter. I did install the Intel graphics media accelerator driver as I figure that one is the most important. I suppose I will also install the HD audio driver. No need to fix what isn't broken by installing the rest of that stuff.

Also with the celeron upgrade to the Santa Rosa T7200 there will be a lot less heat from what krazyphire has said which is enough of a reason that has made me all for the cpu upgrade once again. I was using my 3680 the other day for about 2.5 hours and the thing heated up terribly. I thought I was going to melt the darn thing. I will be ordering my T7200 soon along with some arctic silver 5 thermal compound as from I hear its pretty good at lowering cpu temps from all the reviews I have seen on line and have heard from these forums. I'll post my results back as soon as possible to add a second confirmation for the T7200 for the Aspire 3680-2682 list(as there should be no problems from all the info found here and extra research I have done myself).

    EDIT:
@anglad1608: It is not possible to upgrade integrated graphics as there is no way to properly slide in a new graphics card into a laptop. However I have been thinking that maybe there are some unused pci ports on the motherboard that you could attach one to and just build a case extension to house it. You would need to stretch the pci connection though if your motherboard has it and then make casing for it.... sounds crazy, but if I ever get board enough and had a throw away laptop I would try it myself. Without some heavy modifications I don't think its possible. I think theoretically though its the same as a pc where adding a graphics card will have it recognized and used. Its just no place to attach it?

that Empowering Tech software.... all of it is major BLOAT in my oppinion,,, and the ACER TOUR (it took up 160mb on my PC).... like i said,,,, just make your ecreovery disks before you uninstall all that ACER crap.... and also there were a lot of games (freeware type crap) that is useless unless you have a 6 y/o who will be using your laptop alot..

i personally uninstall anything i don't use or can find a better optoin for!

if you have ???s about particular programs just ask.... i'll give you MY OPPINION.... for what it's worth.

once you have your laptop up a running delete all the acer junk as soon as you can.its a memory Hog.and if you have nortans, get the removal tool and remove it.
theres plenty of free anti virus programmes out there and windows defender is not to bad as well.

ive used AVG free for two years, and I have firewall within my router so windows firewall is never on.

T5600 should be fine... you might even be able go up to the T7200 or higher if you wanted to spend the cash...

but plenty of others have used the T5600 w/ the intel 943

If I remember correctly, thats on the left side of the laptop. It seems that the case has a tight fit around the ports and needed to be gently worked free. Make sure the PC Card slot filler is removed.

(From memory) Two of the screws are located about where the LCD hinges mount to the upper case, one on each side. The third is the screw located between the Kensington lock mount and the two USB ports in the rear.

Extreme upper right side sounds like the microphone cable.
