If you plan on getting anything more powerful than a T5300, then I would say that 1GB would come in handy. :)

Yes, using PC wizard it says exactly that. I have the 940/943 chipset which probably means I have the 940.

    Doh! wasted money.

So, anybody want to trade me a T1350 for a T5300? I'm serious

MB.AY702.003 is an i943 chipset motherboard. So, you're a bit lucky. Now I am not sure whether it will support 3GB RAM or not. It is worth a try, but it didn't work for me.

As for the Core 2 Duo, it should work, but no guarantees, as a Core 2 Duo hasn't been tested on the 3690. So, try out the cheapest one, and update the BIOS to the latest version.
PC Wizard cannot differentiate b/w a 940 and 943 chipset, so it gives 940GML/i943 for both 940 and 940 motherboards. Which notebook, BIOS version and sticker code do you have ?

    Yay, 1000 posts. WOOOHOOOT !! :D

Try out a cheap T5200 or T5500, but update your BIOS to the latest version before upgrading.

I think I will choose a T5200 because it has 533 mhz bus and the other options have 667 bus. Also I will use 2 x 1 GB ram just to be on the safe side.

I read on a spec sheet that the T5300 is 533 mhz fsb also, is this correct I thought it was 667 mhz fsb

    The T5200/T5300 ------------------> 533MHz Bus Speed.

    T5500/T5600/T7200/T7400/T7600 --> 667MHz Bus Speed.

Thanks for all your help guys. I finished re-assembling the laptop yesterday and am now running a T7200 on my Aspire 3680-2682. Does anyone know if there is a better wireless card available or why the blue tooth on this model doesn't work?

I have a Sony/NEC DVD burner (only $55 on pricewatch) slated to arrive tomorrow. Then I'll upgrade the 2.5" SATA hard disk. Any idea what the upper limit on space is as I'd like to make this newly empowered lappy a dual booter or maybe virtual though 2 gig RAM is a bit thin for that. That's about all I have planned to upgrade. Gigabit ethernet would be nice but it's built in so no go there. I'd appreciate any Linux testimonials for this model anyone has or to hear about any performance tweaks you'd recommend. What's the best BIOS rev to use?

Again, thanks for all the great help! I couldn't of done this without ya!

I am expecting my 4965AGN to arrive by next week. It should work, because I think I saw a driver available for it.
Dunno, if the 5100/5300 Wifi link will work.
2GB is the max RAM supported.
I am dual booting Vista 64 and XP 32 without any problems. You basically need a good, fast HDD to dual-boot.
BIOS v1.3508 is fine, and I haven't come across any H/W bugs yet.

you may want to upgrade WIFI cards if using PCI E cards...

you may find a GIGABIT ETHERNET WIRED ADAPTER CARD for cardbus or pcmcia, depending on what slot type the laptop supports

do you recall which chipset you had??
if you had i945 then you can add to 4gigs but only 64bit os can use more than 3.2g

leave the BIOS alone now that you are upgraded and working... unless a NEWER BIOS is released... and you need the features/fixes applied by the new bios.

most didn't come with the bluetooth adapter installed... you can buy a BT adapter from a seller named OLDEGG at E-bay. that is usually why the BT doesn't work....

Hello! I'm a newcomer here... (well as far as posting)

I've looked through this entire topic x2 reading the info and figuring out what I could do with my Acer Aspire 2680-2022 it really hurt when I found no one could get better than a T1350 in theirs (the few who have the 2022 of 3680). But the help people provided via asking questions and replying with detailed help to find out board information. The information on the MB number was ESPECIALLY helpful. I was able to determine what board I had quickly after reading slowly and looking in my laptop.

Since in the past I got curious and had taken my laptop completely apart once for the sake of doing it and putting it back together to get a feel how one is built (versus putting a desktop together like I now enjoy doing). I felt comfortable installing a new cpu for this laptop and taking the information on here to heart.

Well I'll say, I am glad I did, After ordering a T1350 for 22.77 (can get it for $12.50 + $7.80 ish UPS shipping now because it just went down $2.50) at MICROSTAR INC www.starmicro.net Get site I found compared to ebay. Had no problem getting my cpu.

I successfully installed my T1350 with arctic silver 5 and its running like a dream. Celeron M was so hot all the time... I can't thank you guys enough for the incredible insight I was allowed to read here.

REALLY SHORT VERISON: I <3 this forum

I posted here a while ago for info about my aspire 3690's chipset, seemed that a core 2 duo would work.
So I bought a T5500 from a shop here in Holland for 50 Euro's but shipping from US to Holland would have been expensive too and dutch customs are very strict sometimes. The memory is also upgraded to 2x 1gb and it works fine gives a nice performance boost.

But anyway I will start with the cpu upgrade somewhere in the next 24 hours :D . Was just wondering if anyone knows the right procedure to do a cmos reset because I can't seem to find a cmos battery or cmos clear switch anywhere near the ram bays.

I do see a small contact with CMOS written next to it and someone suggested that a cmos reset could be done by shorting the contact points with a screw driver, can anyone confirm this ?

Also thanks for the advice on the mem, buying 2x 2Gb module would have been a waste of money.

OK. This is my first post to this forum, and I have read all 103 pages of this discussion. I would like to thank all of you how fearlessly you explored the hope of expandability of the handicapped Acer Notebook, and the Risk you took with your personal computing equipment. It has given me the info I have been looking for a year to "brain exchange" my Notebook.

I would like to propose that the number of the Acer Notebook (i.e. Aspire 3680-****, or TravelMate 4290-****) has little to do with the expandability of the individual Notebook. More important is the model of the motherboard. It is not cost effective for a computer company to make a different model motherboards for every model Laptop they have. So ergo, motherboards are shared by different Acer Notebook Models.

    I.E.
    I have a TravelMate 2943WMLI, using a Celeron M 430 @ 1733MHz.
After Exploring the 'guts' of the Notebooks hardware (Software diagnostics would not give me a strait answer) I found the following:

    My Motherboard is a HBL51 LA-3081P Rev. 5 made in China (2006-09-01)
It also has a motherboard number of MB.AY7002.002(713275581601)

BIOS is Acer (Pheonix) 3.50 (which I found out was the exact bios [and motherboard] used by 3 other models with Core 2 Duo.)

Now to find out what the Chipset was, I decided to goto the horses mouth (the actual chip die) and find out.
    Chipset: i943GML
    North Bridge- QG82 943GML SL9Z9-5652A201
    South Bridge- NH82801GBM L6475C77 SL8YB

so I looked here for what the i934GML supported:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_chipsets

    Chipset: 943GML Calistoga 82943GML (GMCH) ICH7-M
    Made: January 2006
Processors Supported: Celeron M, Core Solo, Pentium Dual-Core, Core Duo, Core 2 Duo
    FSB: 533 MHz
    Ram Supported: DDR2 533- 2GB Max.
Graphics: Integrated GMA 950 graphics core

And you can see from Wikipedia that the 940GML only supports Celeron M and Core Solo.

    Now here is the confusion.
    This is my Motherboard MB.AY702.002
    http://www.notebooksolutions.ca/zc/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=2648

    and this is the MB.AZL06.003
    http://www.notebooksolutions.ca/zc/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=3016

Now if mine is a 943GML and the MB.AZL06.003 is only a 940GML
    and then this:
    MB.TEB06.001 ~ i940gml with PATA port
    MB.TEB06.003 ~ i940gml with SATA port

    MB.AZL06.001 ~ i943gml with PATA port
    MB.AZL06.003 ~ i943gml with SATA port
is the understanding on this thread.

    So....... is the MB.AZL06.*** really a i943gml?
and if not, can the i940GML support duo possessors?
or does Acer not know its own Motherboard?

First of all, your motherboard does have a i943GML chipset (and a SATA port ?), and will support a Core 2 Duo, if the BIOS supports it.

Secondly, the MB.AZL06.003 does have a 943GML. The info on the site is incorrect. I have the MB.TEB06 and MB.AZL06 Motherboards, and the former has a 940GML and the latter - 943GML, confirmed.

OK, but I don't know why a website would get my Motherboard right, and another wrong?

So the only way to know for sure is to look at the actual die. (Which I did)

(and it has the SATA port)

Beats me. But I have both motherboards, TEB06.001 and the AZL06.003, and I myself confirmed the chipsets. That site is definitely incorrect.

Well, I guess it is inconsequential to my upgrading anyway.
I'm just jazzed that I can on this (80% probable)
As for the bios, I checked the Acer support and found that the:
    Aspire 3690, Aspire 5610, Aspire 5610Z, Aspire 5630, Aspire 5650, Aspire 5680
    TravelMate 2490, TravelMate 4200, TravelMate 4230, TravelMate 4260, TravelMate 4280
    http://www.acerpanam.com/synapse/fo....com&siteid=7117&words=all&keywords=&areaid=2
all share the same bios (in which the TravelMate 4280 is a Core 2 Duo system) 3.50, which is the bios i have now. Anyway I will have the t5300 within a week.

Hmm as of now it seems that the T5500 is a no go in my aspire 3690, but will try bios 3.60 now. But I think the chipset doesn't like 667 Mhz bus speed.

How important is the cmos reset, cause I don't think that a reset is done by shorting the 2 contacts cause they seem already connected, but I cannot find anything else cmos related on the pcb.

The Motherboard is generally indifferent to the change in FSB speed because in the end it will downclock the FSB to 533Mhz.

The reason the T5500 didn't work, provided that you actually have a 943GML chipset, is because you might have ended up with the T5500 Socket P version. From my wikipedia search it seems there are 3 different versions of that CPU, that seem to progress with stepping technology.

OK, another successful upgrade. I got the t5300 today, and installed it in my TravelMate 2490, i943gml chipset with motherboard MB.AY702.002., running @ 1733MHz, FSB 533MHz.
I noticed that the temperature has increased (ranging from 55C to 98C), but so far that does not worry me (63C now as I'm typing). I used Arctic Silver 5 as the cooling compound, and I expected the cpu to be a bit chilled (about 40C).
Thank you all. Couldn't have done it with out you.

Andy, thanks again. Arctic Silver 5 Compound needs at least 200hours to cure, and then the temperature should go down at least 10C. The undervolting will help as well, especially with my battery.
Thanks. I got the max down to 1.1000v. from 1.1375 with a max temp. of 75C (was 98C)

My bios are at 1.35.05, I tossed in the processor and it was just a black screen. Put the old processor back in and it worked fine. The processor was shipped with some bent pins but it still wouldnt work. Is there something I need to do other than just swap the processor?

Tried to fix the pins? If there are no pins broken, you may try to straighten them..If you decide to try that you have to be very careful not to break them.

I straightened the pins but it still didnt work, before I send it back I want to make sure im not missing anything.

I have a T5300 processor on a 943GML motherboard. The bios are at 1.3505. I swapped the processor no go, swapped in the old one and it worked. I didnt need to do anything other than make sure the BIOS are at 1.3505 or higher?

Well yeah you don't need to do anything other than that...Apparently you received a defective CPU...

I installed a t5200 processor after replacing the 5300. The laptop powers on then immediatly turns off. It cant be that I got a second bad processor, am I missing something?
I have a MB.AZL06 sticker so I have the 943 chipset. I put in the T5200 and nothing. Now im getting frustrated that it isnt working.

Thats ok. I meant check the chipset die, the chipset soldered on the mobo next to the CPU socket (also covered by the heatsink)....

I checked and next to the processor is something that has a sticker over it and it looks like the processor. I peeled off the sticker and nothing was written on it. Under the WLAN card was an intel chip and it said:
    NH82801GBM
    L7045D56
    SL8YB
