I researched your computer and you might have a 910GML which can't be upgraded to a Core 2 Duo. However, we should wait for the results of the PC Wizard. :)

Thank You for providing him with a link. I didn't think to do that when I suggested it. :)

Hmmm...a Core 2 Duo is out of the question with that Chipset, but we can check to see if a Core Solo or a Core Duo will work. :)

Thank you very much Skibums. :D. I'll be glad to help once it comes time to help with the upgrade. Also what is the code at then end of your Wife's Aspire 3680. Ex. 3680-XXXX. Mine is an Acer Aspire 3680-2633.

It's the same model as your, 3680-2633. Thanks for the help, I've done a few cpu upgrades and the wife's looks to be fairly easy. But it's nice to a have a guide.

Great then you should be all set. If you haven't all ready done so look at the front page for helpful information and links to disassembly. :).

That I will have to research myself along with, if possible, help from letmealone who knows a good amount about these different chipsets.

EDIT: gerald_tot I think you might be able to use an Intel Pentium M Processor 735 (2MB L2 cache, 1.70GHz, 400MHz FSB). Information based on this link: http://www.computerscomplete.com/Pr...spx?pid=16762&nidnavSlider=24&ngidnavSlider=1

We have to check if your bios would support that Pentium M. The only thing I can suggest is for you to test if it will work or not, but the info gathered so far looks promising. :D

If you need a good price look at this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/Intel-Pentium-M...eZWD1VQQtrksidZp1638.m118.l1247QQcmdZViewItem

Added the Link to our News Bit: http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4242

Major thanks To Theo (TeeJay44) for the PM to Chaz for the sticky which also got us a front page feature.

I did this in september of 07 to the 3680 that I used to own. Upgraded it to 2GB of DDR2 667 memory, and a core duo T2500 667Mhz bus. It accepted both with no issues, and ran amazingly compared to the celeron M it came stock with. FPS in CS:S went from 1-2FPS to 25+ FPS. Boot time, and overall system loading was extremely faster. Also, CPU-z reported that both the CPU and memory were running at 667Mhz bus speeds, so it's obvious that the motherboard supports 667mhz. Heat was actually better too, it seemed to run the fans less, and always remain cool.

Thank you for your information unknown555525. I don't think anyone has tested a chip with a 667MHz bus speed, so you might be the first. This also opens up new possibilities as far as upgrading to Core 2 Duos or Core Duos that have a bus speed of 667Mhz. . So far we have been playing it safe with the 533Mhz bus speed.

Amazing... could you with a recent Everest Ultimate or Pc Wizard check if your machine mounts a 940/943 or a 945 chipset ?

So if he can mount a 667Mhz FSB chip...does that mean we can mount higher Core 2 Duos?

Until the opposite is confirmed, i think that the 3680 of unknown555525 has a i945... dont know why, maybe they were short of 943/940 chipset boards in stock. Anyway yes, with the support of 667 fsb, in theory is open the possibility to use a T7xx0.

If he gives us the information and it comes back positive, I'll consider testing the T7200@2GHz & [email protected]. Both Socket M w/ 667Mhz FSB and appropriate voltages.

    alright Krazy :)

i saw in a spec sheet that the T7xxx's voltage goes up to 1.6v.
but on most MOBO's its under volt to 1.3v to keep the temp down below 64c.
with the under volt it mostly idles at 40c to 45c

Little off subject guys, I am in the middle of disasembling my 3680, and i was wondering after i have taken the back panels off the laptop will i be able to see the processor to be able to replace it or do i have to take out every component and cable and ribbon and COMPLETELY disasemble the laptop?

The laptop requires complete disassembly because the processor is under the heatsink, which is under the motherboard.

Thanks for that, will continue with it tonight now that I have some more small philips screwdrivers to get the tricky screws out!

Just wondering if anyone had any tips on the best/easiest way to disasemble the laptop or any do's or dont's? Ive taken apart many desktop pc's but this is my first real go at a laptop!

    Thanks

Right guys maybe you can help me, I upgraded to the t5300 last night and it didnt work for me, I switched the laptop on and it booted up (fans kicked in, HDD kicked in) but the monitor stayed off. I put the celeron back in and everything worked perfectly. Did I do something wrong or is it a simple case of the processor being incompatible?

    TroubleShooting:

    • What is the code at the end of your 3680? Ex: 3680-XXXX. Mine is a 3680-2633
    • Run PC Wizard to find your chipset
    • Check to make sure your bios is v1.3505

How do I check the code?

PC Wizard crashes every time I use it, I used Everest and it says
North Bridge Mobile Intel Calistoga-GML i940GML/i943GML

I upgraded my bios to v1.3505 before disasembly.

Only sure way is checking by yourself the chipset inside the laptop. Anyway i think that in the production of the 3680 there was a time when i940 were mounted, and the i943 came after. Mine was manufactured in march 2007, mounted in origin a Celeron M440 and the i943 as chipset. Very likely the ones with M420 are older, when the i943 was still not adopted. In this case, resell the T5300 and look for a Core Solo T1350, still a good processor with all the energy saving options not present in the Celeron.

Haha thanks for the info, but I've already looked up the specs for your laptop and it was upgradeable. :). The only thing that may be a problem is that I don't know if your laptop shares the same bios as the aspire 3680. Check your bios version please.

I'm not sure if your bios will natively allow you to upgrade your CPU so we will have to wait and see or find a bios update for you. Never fear though because I have confidence we can solve this. :D

What kind of cpu do you have? For setting the frequency I use Notebook Hardware Control.

i was using the motherboard name MYALL2 and found some good results.

so doing all this research on Bios and mother boards has given me some useful sites to help out on this thread and will get all the links and post them,
its your thread Krazy and you can see if any are of use to you.

download the bottom link and install, then use the first 94xxx

you can also find your chipset this way.
    For Microsoft Windows XP*:
Click the Start button » click Control Panel » double-click the System applet » select the Hardware tab » click the Device Manager button » expand the System devices listing.

I'm actually going to try a Core Duo T2700 (2.33GHz, 667MHz FSB, 2MB Cache) to replace my Celeron M 440 in my Aspire 3690, it should be faster than a T5600. I'm just about to order one off eBay.

I'll let you know how it goes.

The TDP of the T2700 (31w) is actually a little less than the T5600 (34w) and not much more than my current Celeron (27w).

Speedstep will also mean that it won't be running at full power all the time, so the heat may even be less.
