why would acer put pc-5300 mem (666mhz) in or on a laptop with a 533mhz fsb cpu ?
and the motherboard is a MAYALL2 which can support a 666mhz fsb cpu.

i think ive done to much reading and not answered my own questions.
    i need sleep :)

I upgraded my processor to a C2D 1.73 T5300. When im just idling in vista my temp reads at around 58 deg C for each core. I m just wondering if this is normal. Im using Core Temp 0.96.1 to monitor this, but i also have ntebook hardware control running and it reports that my processor is running at about 48-50 deg C. I dont know why there is a difference.

Well at the moment of typing this I couldn't give you an honest estimate of what it should be because I just finished playing Halo which runs my CPU temp upwards. Your core temps might be the only abnormality because mine are 46 degrees Celsius across the board. I'm using Notebook Hardware Control to monitor temps. As long as the processor temp. doesn't leave the range of 45-52 deg C while idling then your fine. :)

I can confirm that the Intel Core Duo T2700 works fine in my Aspire 3690 (i943/940GML chipset).

I just removed the old Celeron, put the Core Duo in and it booted as normal and recognised the new CPU correctly.

Performance has improved noticeably and I can now play San Andreas at 800x600 despite the lowly GMA950 graphics.

Temperatures are also better, the Celeron used to idle at about 45c, while the Core Duo idles at about 36c.

    Proof:

It's running at 997MHz due to the speedstep, when I load up a big program it rises to it's full 2.33GHz.

when you download the new Bios version and unzip it you get a read me(90% of the time) with instructions. follow these to the letter.
my bios update was within windows and was easier than the old system of dos.
always go for the higher Ver number.but check your Ver first use F2 at start-up and take a note.
here's a link to your model bios drivers.

    ftp://ftp.support.acer-euro.com/notebook/aspire_3680/bios

good luck and let us know how you get on.
we check this thread often just in case someone needs help. ;)

Alright this is good to hear. Also, are you absolutely sure that your computer has a 943GML? If so I think we can make further progress into Core 2 Duo land. :D

Yeah, it's definitely a 943GML. I think the next chips to try will be the T7xx series Core 2 Duos w/ 667MHz FSB and 4MB cache.

from what intel are saying only the GM965 chipset uses the Core™2 Duo processor T7700, T7500, T7300, T7100 with a FSB of 533/800Mhz.
but you know me, i will find out if theres a way to shortcut there info ;)

    the T range T7200,T7400,T7600 are 667fsb
if you use the intel chipset id utility it shows the chipsets your laptop can support.
if like mine it starts with 945GM/GMS/940GML EXPRES.Then your upgrade will then depend on FSB Mhz of your motherboard.as the GM/GMS/GML are your suppoted chipset within your laptop.this took intel three weeks to answer and they don't like you to know to much.
chipset ID utilitys like cpu-z will only show the chipset that is being used at the time of scan and not what you have installed.
i updated my chipset drivers and this showed that i now(after intel scan) have 945GT Express Chipset.
    what ever that is.
don't take this as correct yet im still researching and will update soon.

    Happy upgrading people :)

The T7600 uses a 667MHz FSB, so that may work if the motherboard can support it.

from what ive been reading intel update there chipsets but keep them backward compatible to a point then start again dropping the last 940xx bits.so some chipsets chips have multi cpu support but they like to keep it a secret ;)

Hello...i am new to this forum...I have been reading all about how to do a CPU swap with my acer 3680-2633...after doing so and deciding i really wanted a t7600 CPU swap I went and completely disassembled my laptop and now have 10 screws left over...but it took about 2 hours solid no breaks to do this and put it back together...I have concluded that this specific model is ready to take on a T7600 swap and I am confident enough to do so...also...if you think installing RAM on this model is nerve racking...DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS CPU SWAP!!!...I am telling you from my experience you must have a somewhat good functional memory, organizational skills, knowledge of electronic internal connections, all tools necessary, and you must pay very close attention to details!!! If you can do all that in two hours considering all the above then i'm not stopping you nor do I express to you any guarantee that this is safe and/or practical. SO, if you have the guts and/or money to do this, which i only have guts, DO IT!!! Here is a photo of what this piece looks like naked and CPU uninstalled...PHOTO...I am happy to announce that everything is working like it should even though there are 10 chassis screws not installed. no biggy...all the ribbons....cooling system...and wired connections are intact and installed properly. no changes have been made yet to the system...more to come!!! and btw there is no other way to get to the CPU than to take everything apart upto about 70-75%...point being...the motherboard has to come all the way out so you can access your CPU...PERIOD!

Wow, those T7*** processors are expensive!! Since Ive already successfully installed my T5300, Im going to wait and see who successfully installs a T7*** first before I make my move :D

And whoever said the CPU upgrade on the 3680 was hard, is a wimp. It took me about an hour from start to finish, and mostly because I was inspecting everything and doubling checking my work putting it back together. Its tricky, dont get me wrong, but nothing that cannot be done. If you are leary of it, ask a friend who knows computers (come on- everybody's got one!) to help.

    Machine
    : 3680-2682
    Manufactured May 2004
Purchased Refurbished June 2007 ($300+17 shipping from geeks.com - not bad)
Free battery from Acer, call up, be cool, ask for a larger battery. When they tell you they don't make one and offer a second 2000mah battery just explain you don't think it's worth the money but you really love the machine.

    Ram: PQI Turbo 667mhz

Tested: T2300 from Mac Mini - WORKS!
Tested: T5600 from Mac Mini - WORKS!
Tested: T2250 (1.73 Dual Core? 2mb cache) Works and staying in.

Out of the above the 2250 ran cooler. I didn't see much performance increase yet, but I mostly run VNC/RDP with this laptop. Got the CPU off ebay for $24+7 shipped. The other two chips were earmarked for other systems.

Thanks A HELL A BUNCH Guys!

As a token of thanks, iphoneringpack.com use discount code: ringtone20
Of course if you don't have an iphone I guess THANKS will have to work.

Anyone need a 1.86 celeron 440? I guess I'll dump it on ebay.

Disassembly tip: The acer 3680 uses 3 types of screws that I saw. 1 long (most of the bottom) one short (most of the internals) and one medium with threads half way. Use a Sharpie, 3 different colors to be exact. Blue for long, Red for short, Silver for oddball. Just make a slight mark at each hole. It comes off with rubbing alcohol or clorox wipe if not left on for long.

Took me 1hr with a precession screwdriver set and a magnetic phillips to pull the screws up out of the case.

WOW MUCH COOLER! I'm not burning my knee anymore.

Been using this pretty much through the night so I just want to chime in with some more observations.

    1) Bonjour printing works all the time now. I figured it was a windows issue locally on this laptop, but each reboot all three printers on the Mac server show up. When connected through the VPN the other two show up and this never happened before. 1 in 10 times it would have worked.

    2) Reboots and bootups in general are faster.
    3) Graphics issues like screen flicker don't appear to be happening anymore.
    4) GIMP runs much better
    5) Importing 988,455 records into filemaker used to be about a 5min affair, I tried it last night for giggles and it took less than a min. MUCH faster that before and this includes modifying on import the city/state/zip into separate fields.
    6) Battery power before was at best 1:20. Now it's showing after a full fresh recharge 1:55 so it was worth it for me.

One more thing, when choosing a CPU keep in mind the power requirements. I don't remember seeing this but I think we should keep to CPU's with similar power requirements to the Celerons. Would be interesting to see if the L or U coreduo's would be beneficial. They are the low voltage and ultra low voltage CPU's... 15 and 9w respectively.

After selling my T2050 that didn't work on Ebay, I purchased a core solo T1350.

I installed it in my 3680-2574 and IT WORKS!

I think the reason the core duo didn't work is because this laptop was manufactured 12/06 and has the 940GML chipset but I'm not really sure that is the chipset as I didn't see any marked chips when I had it apart.

I already have noticed better performance and the battery lasts longer with the Speedstep.

Thanks for everyone's help and I can assist anyone in disassembling and reassembling this laptop.

    mby2j,

If you want to post an Ebay link to a item you are selling, you must post it in the Buy, Sell, Trade forum and you must follow the BST rules.

    Thx
