    Intel i943/940GML Chipset
    Acer Inc, PresPa1 - Motherboard

Intel CoreDuo and Core2Duo were standard from a Mac Mini and worked. Although they appeared to run no cooler than the Celeron. T2250 Intel CPU CoreDuo currently installed and running cooler. Battery is twice as long lasting.

New to the forum, read it all...........Fantastic Information.
I have a 3680-2633 I received for free. The hard drive fried out and the owner just gave it to me.
With the info on this forum (now sticky :D ) i can turn this into a sweet laptop. So a quick thanks to all especially krazyphire.

Anyways.......I am looking for a T5300 but cannot find any that are not auctions on e-bay, all the buy-it-now are over 100.00 bucks. I was wondering if any of you knew another source (in the U.S.) that sold them for cheap.

    Again......I'm excited to start my Upgrade. :D :D :D

im not very good with the power management thingy, but is there a way to force my T5300 in my Acer ASpire 3680-2682 to run at the lower voltage?

I just upgraded my 3680-2682 tonight. I didn't need to flash the BIOS, since it already had v1.3505. Start to finish took just over an hour. I bought the T5300 from Ebay for $75 shipped.

I must admit, this process is not for the faint of heart. I've opened up many laptops, and this was probably the most challenging. Aside from the bezel above the keyboard, the trickiest hidden screw to locate was HOLE9, which required unplugging the display, backlight, and WiFi connectors before I could sneak my mini screwdriver between the top case and the main board. I had problems with a few screws when putting it back together. The blue thread sealant started jamming on a few screw holes, and I had to clean the blue slivers out before the screws would go all the way back in. I probably could have avoided this if I kept track of which hole each screw came out of.

It powered up the first time, although Vista detected the CPU change and asked me to restart. I had read comments about the T5300 running much cooler than the M440, but I was more than a little skeptical. It does run noticeably cooler, and the fan doesn't pump out as much heat as before. At work, I would instrument this kind of thing, but I'm just going to enjoy this on my home laptop without worrying about numbers.

Thank you krazyphire so much for starting this thread!

Thank you so much again for your trailblazing work!

I forgot to mention, I didn't even bother adding any thermal compound. There was plenty of excess thermal compound from the Celeron M 440 left over on the heatsink. The M 440 die is rectangular (taller than wide), and it left a neat die print in the grey thermal compound. The T5300 is squarish, as wide and tall as the M 440 is tall. Simply placing the heatsink directly over the T5300 was enough to squish some of the excess thermal compound into place over the die, while making itself a larger imprint in the thermal compound.

Another observation: other posts in this thread also commented about negligible differences in die temperature among the Celeron M's, Core Duos, and Core 2 Duos. Since they're not very different across prcessors, my guess from these reports is that the CPU die temperature in the 3680 is regulated strictly by fan speed, with one setting for Power Saver and Balanced, and a higher one for High Performance. Once the CPU gets up to temperature, the BIOS does its best to keep the die tempreture at or below these setpoints, like a thermostat. That's why the fan speed is so much less on the Core Duo and Core 2 Duo CPUs than the Celeron M - there's less heat to vent for each corresponding temperature setpoint. If there was no CPU fan, or if the CPU fan speed was fixed like in the old days, then we would be able to measure significant temperature differences between the CPUs.

:) awww shucks... Thanks for the honorable mention! Im glad this thread came about, there are so many 3680 owners out there that it has benefitted. It also helped me help my friend with her laptop (Aspire 4315). Armed with the knowledge and experience of a laptop processor upgrade, I put a T5450 in her 960gl chipset

My T5300 upgrade is the best improvement I have ever made on any computer. The performance increase is profound!

I'm curious if you're getting 3+ hours on the high capacity 4000mAH battery, or the standard 2000mAH battery? My 2000mAH battery used to give me about 1 hour even on the Celeron M 440, but now it's just over 1.5 hours on the T5300. It's a good 50% improvement in run time and it runs faster to boot.

A neat feature I stumbled into with PC Wizard is to minimize it, so it shows up as a widget on the top right Vista desktop. Then I can monitor the temperatures of each core as well as watch how Vista splits up the CPU load to each core, in a more convenient form than Task Manager's screen-hungry window.

does anyone have info/knowledge about cpu upgrade on Acer Aspire 5315??
Will the Core 2 Duo T5300 work in this config?

    CPU is an Intel Celeron 530 M @ 1733
    socket is mPGA-478
FSB is 533,, CPU speed is 1733 Mhz
    Codename : Merom-L
    Revision : A1
    Technology : 0.065µ
    CPU ID : 6.6.1
    CPU IDEx : 6.16.1
    Microcode : MU066133
    Mobile : Yes

    NorthBridge : Intel GM965
    SouthBridge : 82801HEM (ICH8M-E) LPC Interface Controller

    NorthBridge Information :
Architecture : Direct Media Interface (DMI)
    Manufacturer : Intel (Acer Inc)
    Codename : Crestline
    Revision : C0
    Bus Speed : 133 MHz
FSB Frequency : 532 MHz (QDR)

Also considering this info about RAM

    Information SPD EEPROM (DIMM0) :
    Manufacturer : GoldenMars Technology
    Part Number : Unspecified
    Serial Number : AAE21A0F
    Type : DDR2-SDRAM PC2-5300 (333 MHz) - [DDR2-666]
    Format : SO-DIMM (67.6 x 3)
    Size : 1024 MB (2 ranks, 4 banks)

can i assume that it would be possible to go to a 667 FSB processor without replacing my ram? if so what 667 FSB processor would you suggest?

thanks for your help and suggestions
and thanks to krazyphire for the inspiration,, BTW congrats on the sticky

been doing some research using pc wizard.

    Socket/Slot : U2E1
    Upgrade interface : ZIF Socket
Supported Speed : 1600 MHz (or more)
    Supported Voltage : 3.3V
I used my old aspire for the test.
as you can see supported voltage 3.3
when using C2D the supported voltage is split in two 1.5v to 1.6v for each core.
thats how the better battery life and cooler running comes about.

you need to make sure of the combined voltage of the two cores is not over the supported voltage or you will get an under clock effect with the two cores.

I need to get out more ;)

I just stumbled on this page when I was researching my aspire 3680 hardware for linux. I am so excited that I can get rid of that crappy celeron! I am bidding on a T7200 from ebay and will post with my results if and when I win.

PC wizard says i943/940GML... hope it works.

I researched this when months ago when I first bought the laptop from Circuit City ($300 after MIR with printer scanner and wireless router!) and everyone was saying it couldn't be done... If people don't know, they should not offer their mis-information.. :err:

    Thanks for all your info!

A T7200 ! I am sure that all the owners of the 3680 are curious about this update and hoping it works... but it seems to me fair to remind you that up to now there arent confirmed proofs that this update is possible. The confirmed best updates are the good old T5300 and a T2600 with fsb @667, this one beyond the theorical fsb limits of the i943. Please keep us informed about your adventure.

hoggie directed me to this thread to ask about upgrading my 5920G with a Penryn class mobile processor. I'm thinking the T8100...just I knew a few months back that there currently was no confirmed BIOS that would/could support or a certainty that there would be a BIOS revision released that could. my understanding is that there is now BIOS support for Penryn mobile processors for teh 5920G. I went to the Acer-Euro site and downloaded the 3808 BIOS. I just have to investigate how to flash this BIOS (I've always hated flashing BIOS on desktops and fortunately I've been able to avoid it most of the time) on my laptop.

so anyhow, any advice or recommendations would be appreciated.

no I do not have the software necessary. I know I have the right BIOS as I downloaded it off the 5920 entry listed on the Acer-Euro FTP server. I guess I should go back there and get the software listed, eh?

being as I don't have a floppy drive (gods I hate those things!), I'm going to anticipate that it can be done via USB key now?

edit - hmmm, upon review of the Acer FTP site, I don't see any BIOS update software.

Updating is very simple, and is done directly in windows environment. No need to boot from floppies, cd or USB. You just need a program downloadable from Acer site, it does all, it even checks if the bios you are going to flash is compatible with your pc.

I uploaded the software at this link: http://www.sendspace.com/file/qbc7u9

I got it from this official link after unzipping the 3808 Vista Bios: http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_5920.html

The name is "SWinFlash2034". Unzip and run that software.

yes, that's how I usually did my BIOS flashes, with a Windows based flash utility. I must honestly say tho, while I've never had anything bricked that way, others have, which is a disappointment. I sincerely hope that laptops soon follow the way premium motherboards have gone and build a flash utility into the BIOS itself that will access external storage like a USB key to get the new BIOS revision. :D

oh yes, been there done that krazyphire. I was just saying how much I would like Acer to institute the BIOS based flash program like some of Asus' motherboards.

as easy as it is, doing anything in Windows or any OS for that matter, that's as sensitive as this is, is dangerous. few things being interrupted would brick a system like Windows locking up on you while flashing your BIOS would.

Well Congrats to all.....Another successful upgrade to a T5300. Everything works perfectly, performance is spectacular compared to that celeron. Thanks to everyone for help. YOU ALL ROCK. I am now proud to have a 3680!!!!!!

I wonder if you could upgrade the wireless card to a wireless N...just an after thought.

    I LOVE MY NEW LAPTOP.......

A little of topic, but: http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/?p=308 Upgrade to 802.11 wireless a/b/g for $30.

EDIT: I have a few more tricks that I want to try my 3680

    • Add Bluetooh
    • Upgrade Harddrive to 7400RPM
    • Upgrade Wireless to a/b/g
    • Try adding a Centrino Duo Processor

I want to see how much I can get out of it before I get a Next-gen laptop. :)

Adding the 7200RPM is going to be a real treat, Krazyphire. The performance increase you see will definately surprise you! The T5300 upgrade made a big difference, but the 7200RPM HD upgrade made a huge difference.
