Thanks Hoggie I have just got in the t5300 today so not sure which one to use, I am changing out my 5920g to a t7500 so no need for the t5250 1.5 it came with. Going to use the 2 gigs of pc 5300 and the 160 gb hitachi hard drive with vista premium from it though.

Ok Im getting confused now... there are people posting in this thread with laptops OTHER than a 3680, different chipsets all together, so Im losing track of whats going on...

Didnt somebody say a T7*** worked in their 3680?? Or was that for a different laptop/chipset?

I think for future reference, if you have a question about a processor upgrade on a laptop other than a Acer Aspire 3680, you need to make a new thread out in the forum.

    my fault mate sorry.
i had a T7xxx on the shelf that would not go in my aspire all the wrong spec.
but the wifes new lappy had all the right chipset, fsb and memory so i gave it a go. :D
sorry for going of track ;)

Simplistik has stated that he put a T7200 into his 3680, and it functioned correctly.

PS: Hoggie don't worry about it now that we have proven the T5300 to be a viable upgrade, as long as people post their acer laptop information this thread can become an asset to the entire acer community. Instead of a select group of laptops. :)

have seen loads of T2080's up for sale and looking on wiki they to would be a good upgrade for the celeron.
the spec between the T5300 v T2080 is not much if your just an average user.
gaming and stuff would show the T5300 as the better option.
will spend more time looking in to this :D

    Aspire 9503 question

I've spent hours pouring over the wealth of knowledge shown on these pages. Kudos to all.

Now I hate to throw in a slightly unrelated question, does anyone have an idea about upgrading the CPU in an Acer Aspire AS9503EWSMi. It came with a Celeron M 370 1.5 GHz CPU with the 915GM or possibly 915GMS chipset, (per CPUID). I'm wondering if this motherboard will accept a Pentium M 745 1,83 GHz (400 MHz FSB) or better yet a P-M 770 2.13 GHz chip (533 MHz FSB), they are all listed as Dothan chips.
Will the FSB bus speed automatically crank the speed up to 533 with a CPU with a higher speed or will the CPU speed be reduced if the FSB stays at 400?

I've assembled a dozen desktops in the past but the deepest I've delved into a laptop is replacing the memory and hard drives.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Correct... But my 3680-2682 doesn't seem to be too similar with what everyone else is showing. The pc is defenitely a 3680-2682 but the chipset is 945gm NOT 943/940. It does show up as 945/943/940gml on the utility but when opened the Chipset ID states 945gm. Hoggie's pic of his logic board barely resembles mine. I've been away on biz for the last 3 days (with said laptop) so I haven't taken it back apart. It's currently acting as an SQL server for the remainder of the week (client's server toasted-nothing big just basic SQL stuff). 667 bus works on both CPU and RAM. A T7200 from a Mac Mini fired up as did a 5600. But I'm also running a T2250 that some with the same model stated did not work, ALA 940gml chip...

Acer also used the same logic board in the 2480 (same as mine anyways) travelmate with the same plastics. So I'm actually wondering if what I have is a 2480 rebadged as a 3680 (it's refurbished so maybe)... Who knows. They have 90 different models, all with the same specs. Maybe we should be gathering Logic Board codes not model #'s.

some else has spotted the same thing i have.
you have to take the board model number. i found mine on the ram slot.
i google search and found i i should have 945gml chipset and not the i943 shown in pc wizard.

    edit.
most acer laptops have the board model number on the ram slot :D

did you get that model number of the ram slot ?
i got my mother board model all wrong until i found a sticker on the ram slot.
this turned out to be the acer code for my mother board.then i found a site that supplied acer boards with all the info i wanted about my acer :D

So i think we can resume this way: the updates to T5600 and T7200 processors (both fsb @667) worked in a non standard 3680, mounting a i945 chipset. And the update to a T2700 (fsb @667) worked in a Aspire 3690, a laptop using a motherboard different than the 3680. So actually it seems to me that the best updates confirmed to work on a standard 3680 still are:

-for the 3680 with i940 chipset (sticker on memory slot MBTEB0600x), the Core Solo T1350 with fsb @533.

-for the 3680 with i943 chipset (sticker on memory slot MBAZL0600x), the Core 2 Duo T5300 with fsb @533.

Has anyone attempted or had any success upgrading the CPU of the $348 w@L-M@rt special??

    Aspire 5135-2153 contains a celeron M 530... specs below:

Spec# CPU Speed Processor Bus Speed Mfg Tech Cache Size Package Type
    SL9VA..1.73 GHz......530......533 MHz...65 nm.......1 MB.........Micro-FCPGA

    i've tried to replace with core 2 duo models T5300 & T5600
specs on 5300 are exactly the same and the 5600 only differs in the 667 FSB

Spec# CPU Speed Processor Bus Speed Mfg Tech Cache Size Package Type
    SL9WE..1.73 GHz....T5300......533 MHz...65 nm......2 MB.........Micro-FCPGA
    SL9U3...1.83 GHz....T5600......667 MHz...65 nm......2 MB.........Micro-FCPGA

Despite having a the same cpu socket package type, my laptop's mobo socket had one pin hole right next to the PIN 1 Key pin (maybe pin#A2) (the second position on the bottom row which would be the first pin on the row due to the first pin being blocked as a keying method) well mine had 2 holes blocked or not there, i even tried modifing the socket and making a hole so the CPUs would physically fit. Even then my notebook wouldn't boot.
the powerlight would come on for a few seconds then cut off after the bios failed to detect a cpu,, but replacing the celeron 530 the pc boots right up, infact i'm using it now.

after doing some "more indepth research" at the intel site, I came across info that the GM965 chipset supports T7X00 series core 2 duo cpus but none of the pre t7x00 cpus were listed as being supported by the GM965 chipset.

i guess i'll now be searching for a SL9SF T7200 Core 2 Duo, unless some one can suggest a better upgrade option.

    any ideas??

    The 530 is a Socket 479, a.k.a. Socket P.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Celeron_microprocessors#.22Merom-L.22_.28standard-voltage.2C_65_nm.29
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_P

Your best bet may be a T7100.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Core_2_microprocessors#.22Merom-2M.22_.28standard-voltage.2C_65_nm.29
The good news for you is that the T7100 costs less than a T7200.

Or you can try other Socket 479 CPUs listed on the chart above, such as a T5250, T5550, etc. The only unknown is if your BIOS and MB will support the 667 FSB.

Sorry, i reported badly the code of the i940 motherboard, i corrected my post with the right one. Anyway i found them in a swedish page selling Acer parts, dont know if is the same reported by Hoggie. Just google the word acerparts. The correct board codes are:

    MB.TEB06.003 Main Board SATA.940GM.UMA.W/RDR
    MB.AZL06.001 Main Board SATA.943GML.UMA.W/RDR
    MB.TEB06.001 Main Board ZR1.PATA.940GM.UMA.

i found there is a big difference between laptops and it was doing my head in so .i googled every number on and in my laptop.
i also found that pc-wizard and cupid will only check what the drivers are for and not what you actually have inside the plastic box ;)

    mich, you have a i943gml chipset :D

when you update the drivers for your chipset it amazing all of a sudden you have a better chipset.
mine has gone from i943gml to 945gml driver version8.3.0.1009 to 8.3.0.1011

I am looking to do this with my acer 3680-2249. Based on all the info obtained, I can do the Core 2 Duo T5300(T5200) upgrade. Here is my question, where other than ebay can I find it. There was one on ebay but wondering if anyone knew other sites to buy this CPU. Any help would be great! Thanks in advance.

I bit the bullet and did the upgrade tonight, what a pain haha, it is up and running and seems to run fine except it runs kinda hot i think used artic sliver not that much but temps seem to run at 62c and the other core at 67c and my finger mouse thingy ha doesn't seem to be working but i have a small mouse anyways.

It booted up fine and right away everything was found, I even have two different types of ram and it noticed it fine. Thanks everyone for your help.

question my mulitiplier reads 6x0 at startup, current and minimal but on the maximal it says 13x also my core temp has gone down to 43 cel from 60 and hovers around 46 degrees. My processors both read sometimes at 100% and i don't think that is natural since my celeron never went that high.

Simply, 950 GMA is the name of the vga adapter embedded in the i945 family chipset.

after taking apart my laptop for the second time and putting it back in working order i found the markings on the chipset to be a i943 which really sucks...this to me is the only way of determining which chipset you have...btw...you don't have to take off that black piece of plastic that covers the chipset...it comes off but its not necessary...the marking are right on the heatsink in the middle...they are very very hard to see but they are there...use a large magnifying glass with a light and it should show...all these software tools don't get it right...so i guess a good upgrade would be the t5300 core 2 duo...oh well atleast i will save in upgrade cost in configuring this thing to be operating at full capacity! again...this information applies to my acer 3680-2633 laptop

Exactly. I, too, have i943GML chipset and 950GMA integrated graphics. 950 GMA (GMA=Graphics Media Accelerator) has nothing to do with the Core 2 Duo upgrade on the 3680.

    Ram: Memory-up.com (PC-5300 1gig Prices under $45)
HDD: This one is up to you if you want capacity over speed go with a 5400rpm because in my opinion the 7200rpm upgrade is negligible if you want to build a budget high-quality laptop. I recommend newegg.com

    Price Chart:

    T5300: ~$80
    Ram: 2 x 1G PC-5300 ~$80-90
    HDD: 5400rpm 160gb $82.99 vs. 7200rpm 100gb $99.99

7200rpm drives are slightly faster in boot-up and program load time, but run hotter than the 5400rpm drives.

In the end it's all up to you :)

Krazy, love you to death but totally disagree with you. I run HD Tune and my new Hitachi 7K200 7200RPM runs about 2-10F lower than my western digital hard drive that came with my 3680!! Not to mention that my boot time went from ~3 minutes until I could open IE7, to >30 seconds with the new Hitachi 7200RPM hard drive. I wish I had a digital camera still, my in-laws have mine, I would make a youtube video for evidence!! The 7k200 has MUCH FASTER boot times, very significant, super noticeable and there is NO increase in temperature at all.

Bottom line: Go for the 7200RPM hd. Go to newegg, look at all of the user reviews. The Hitachi 7k200 (100gb) had such good user reviews (I posted one as well :D) that you cannot go wrong. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145181 What everybody says about the temp being higher, uses more battery, blah blah blah. I keep my profile on "high performance", my temps are great, battery is awesome. Maybe on older technology 7200RPM hard drives, but not the 7K200. No way.

If I wouldve listened to everybody on the web, Id still by using my celeron (as everybody said it wasnt possible to upgrade, Krazy is my hero on that part  ), I wouldnt have upgraded to 2gb ram (Because everybody says I wouldnt notice a difference from 1gb to 2gb), and I'd still be waiting 3 minutes for my laptop to boot because that stupid Western Digital hard drive they put in was a total PIG!

    ~rant end~ :D :D

Like I said it is a matter of preference. I prefer, capacity over speed relative to pricing of different drives. Once the 7200rpm drives become a realistic addition to a budget laptop I'll be all for them. :)

Its ok Krazy, I still got love for ya :D Also I think the 16mb of cache in the 7K200 has something to do with it too. The WD hard drive that came with my 3680 only had 8mb cache.

im pretty sure that the 940gml chipset does not support any of the core 2 duo's...940 support only the core duos at best...i saw this bit of info in this same thread that you posted on fire14...but...do some research on it on google.com

I heard that the 940's might support Core solo. 943's support C2D (obviously or we wouldnt all be here bragging about our upgrades) :D

Who has a proven 940 around here? Somebody want to be our b!tch.. I mean guinea pig? :D

Advice for saving money on RAM: I was patient, and picked up 2 separate used 1GB PC-5300 sticks of SODIMM RAM for under $12 each incl shipping from Ebay over the last three weeks. I had to wade through all the "2x512MB" listings, and disciplined myself to let all the $10+ (before shipping) auctions go. They're both Hynix with very different labels and constructions - one pulled from a Toshiba and the other from a Compaq. But they worked, and cost much less than Micron and Kingston brands. Just make sure the seller guarantees that they are fully working before you bid.

In the end, I got 2GB of RAM for under $23 incl shipping. It makes me feel a little dumb for paying $40 for a 1GB PC-4200 module from Circuit City last August.

Good work! You did much better googling than I did, as I couldn't seem to come up with any worthwhile hits during my searches.
