I have a 9520 and it has a Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Adapter attached to a miniPCIe port.
I want to go N and instead of using my PCMCIA i wanted to go internal.
So my question is what do I have to look out for?
I have read this
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=152876&highlight=upgrade+mini+pci+express
I was thinking about this GN-WI06N-RH
If anyone else has experience here I would like to know, even when it is not with the seldomly bought 9520. It appears to be a simple operation so people please let me know if this is not.

to reap the full benifits of N-draft's HIGHER transfer speeds and STRONGER signals,,, you need 3 antennas.... you could easily add an INTERNAL antenna or you could go the route i plan on going and add an EXTERNAL ANTENNA
you may want to check into the ATHEROS AR5008,,, when it is paired with a N-class router that uses the ATHEROS chipset (some new DLINKs for example) the combination will out perform other WIFI cards. -
Thanks for the reply. I am not that excited about pulling my laptop apart, in fact I would be an idiot to do that as I do not have the experience.
Can you give me an example of an adapter that uses the ATHEROS AR5008 chipsets as I am planning on getting a D-link DIR-655.
So is it correct that with only 2 antennas I will only get the 2.4ghz. The third is for 5.0GHZ?
Other than do what you did is there some other way of doing this with the third antenna. For example as I have no experience here, I would attach the third antenna and then just stuff it in there somewhere (whereever it fits). -
i believe the DIR-655 is ATHEROS BASED... DIR-655 specs
the ATHEROS AR5008 is the MODEL # of the Atheros mini-PCI wifi card that is N-draft... AR50083NX specs
and you should be able to just stuff the 3rd antenna inside "where ever you have room" just besure to cover the exposed metal contacts on the ANTENNA with some electrical tape or something to prevent accidental shorting of something if it were to move around... -
Ok bought it. Lets see if I can get it in, and then if I can get it to work.

Well I bought the AR50083NX. I live in Germany, but got it through an Ebay seller in HongKong who sent it from Shenzen China. I think it fell off the back of a Foxconn truck as it was stamped with Apple Inc.
But I got it.
On my laptop there is a small door underneath which hides the RAM chips and this card. It was as simple as unscrewing two screws, and pulling out the old card. And then slipping the new card in.
I used the existing ACER antennas (2x) for two of the three connections and then the third anntenna i got it to go in the laptop by winding it around where there was space. I will not be using 5ghz at the moment anyway so I cannot test the thrid antenna.
To my surprise Vista recognised the new card and did the whole install driver routine.
Then and this is the best part, ePower Management, now does not have an on.off radio button for Wlan, meaning that I have freed myself from that proprietary piece of software that annoys me to no end.
If I could do the same with bluetooth I would be happy. -
glad it worked out for you....
i've not beeb using the ePower managment or any Empowering Tech software.
the only acer software i have loaded is the LAUNCH MANAGER
newest VISTA DRIVER
http://www.station-drivers.com is a good site for new drivers!
