    Hi

I am new to laptops, this is my first one to be honest.

I got this laptop as new, because it was cheap and seemed very feature packed. I wanted something to use as a backup PC for when I have my desktop stripped down and out of action.

I know a lot about Pcs I build them and upgrade on a regular basis, but like I sais laptops are a new breed .

Ok here is what I would like to know, I am running Vista X64 bits on my desktop pc with 4gb of ram. I am thinking about slamming another 2gb of ram in this laptop and installing Vista 64 bits onto it so basically all my apps ect will run on the laptop aswell as my desktp, I know I will get the noobs telling me " but why do you want to run 64 bits" same old story, I want to because its better.

Has anyone done this? what do I need? I allready have the CDs for install with my Desktop, will the Acer keys activate the 64 bit version? will blue tooth and all the other acer features work ect? I know a lot of laptops now come shipped with 64bits installed. Can the Acer apps be downloaded in 64 bit flavours?

I have some more equestions but will just start of here and see were it leads me, thanks in advance..

i may be wrong,,, but i believe that the same key that activates 32 VISTA will activate the SAME LEVEL of 64 bit VISTA... (if your key is for vista home.. then when you activate vista 64 using that same key will result in vista 64-home)

make sure you can find all the 64 bit drivers for your hardware... that is the main thing... and as for apps... the should work the same unless limited by hardware like video card or some other piece of hardware.

good luck finding 64bit acer apps,, they are doing good to keep the 32bit apps running...

that is one of the prices of going to 64 bit platform..

You don't really need them unless you use the security and encryption stuff.

They are just fancier versions of built in windows apps.

Couple more questions guys, everything seems to be running great for me so far.

Crystal Eye webcam - I can only take Pics with it? what proggy do you guy reccomend to record Video with it? I googled and some say Movie maker but it doesnt pic up my Camera.

Media Buttons - sometimes the red light comes on what is this and how come it comes on? A reboot fixes this but I have no idea what it is.

    Thanks in advance.

if i recall correctly, the RED LED indicates that it is RECORDING

if the launchmanager doesn't give the mediabuttons thier funcionality,, then you'd have to install the EMPOWERING TECH FRAMEWORK and another EMPOWERING APP (i can't recall the name of it,, but i think its self titled,,,, something like MEDIA CONTROL)

the problem you will run into there is finding 64 bit versions of the apps... i've no clue if the 32 bit vista versions will work under Vista64

In my experience the 32-bit apps should work fine using Windows-on-Windows (WoW) which is the 32bit app on 64bit OS capability built into Vista. Problems will occur if the apps make specific calls to drivers where there are differences between 32bit and 64bit, this is almost always. The way I see it if the app is using a Vista functionality and extendeding on that then should be fine, i.e power management, wifi etc. However if the app ties directly into drivers, i.e. webcams etc then this may be an issue.

The above is from my extensive work with testing Vista 32/64 on desktops, I do not pretend to be a laptop specialist ;)
