    Hi!

I have not made a post on these forums in a while...

Im looking to upgrade my memory...

Does anyone know if VS1GSDS333 by corsair is compatible with Acer Aspire 5002WLMi?

That is the exact model of the laptop, but according to the manual it should use PC2700 SoDIMMs.
Of course, this could just as well mean their own "industry standard" modules. Or there could be some weird compatibility problem.

    After opening up the laptop I find NANYA 2 x 512MB 333MHz-2.5

Im thinking about upgrading the ram but want to know what is and is not compatible first.

    Thanks

Yes it does. You can use DDR 333 (PC 2700) or DDR 400 (PC 3200) of any brand in your laptop. You can only use 2 1GB sticks maximum, so check Newegg.com or your favorite e-tailer for 1GB sticks. Here is the cheapest one that I found on Newegg:

A-Data is a great company so don't feel like the cheapest ram is crappy. The CAS latency is 2.5 which is the lowest you can get nowadays. Buy two of these to have 2GB of ram.

    thanks.

Oh but I forgot to mention I upgraded the bios to 3A32.

I got it from the acer EU site since it was not available for me on the US site for some reason.

I had to do this upgrade since I am running Windows XP SP3... had some strange power/stability issues which have since then been resolved.

Anyways, just wanted to post that info for you to see just in case I need to reset the bios or anything...

no changes needed other than to replace that ram...
the better speed is probably gonna be cheaper or same cost as the 2700,,

so buy the better ram,,, may get a modest performance gain!

new bios is a good thing 95% of the time,,,

    thanks.

Do you guys know if my particular Acer limits me to CAS 3 memory in terms of DDR 400Mhz or PC 3200 ?? or can I use CAS 2.5 DDR 400Mhz or PC 3200 in this Acer notebook ?

if 2.5 doesnt cost more buy it!!it has potential speeds are better,,, and worse caee is ram would slow to CAS 3 speeds

is the worst case not that the ram being 2.5 @ 400Mhz will not allow the notebook to boot at all?

If I have nothing to loose and everything to gain from 2.5 @ 400 Mhz then I will surely buy this over 3.0 @ 400 Mhz

buy the 2.5 CAS PC3200... Memory is not locked to it's fastest advertised speed... it can slow down,,, just like pc3200 can slow down to pc2700 speeds if required... the CAS lstency speeds slow to match the highest CAS # of the slowest ram stick.... lower CAS #'s mean less delay in reading and writing to the memeory (generally speaking)

buy the CAS 2.5... you will notice a difference even if it's speed gets clocked back to 333 Mhz,, the 2.5 CAS will give you a speed bump unless mixing with a CAS 3 or higher stick of ram... then speed is limited to higher CAS in the system..

i'd personally buy 2 pieces of matched memory (same brand, speed, size and CAS speeds) ,,, i'd buy PC3200 with the lowest CAS you can find... within your budget...

then donate the old stuff to a needy friend or family member... or sell it if you can find someone buying!!!
