    Hi

I had this notebook, the Acer 5051 for almost a year and I'm happy with it, but I wanna be even more happy with it. By this I mean upgrading it with 2GB of ram which is straight forward and replacing the MK-36 to a TL-50, this is where I need some assistance.

This is my first ever notebook so I'll need some guides or tips on how to open it up in order to access the CPU socket. It also looks like I need some replacement thermal pads for the chipset heatsink, does anyone know where to get these in the UK?

    Many thanks,
    David

yup it is possible but only if your MotherBoard has the S1 socket.

download CPU-Z and see what socket your computer has. If not compatable just stick with the ram upgrade.

The MK-36 is a socket s1 processor, and single core as you already know. Therefore upgrading to a dual core turion x2 TL-xx series processor is possible. However if you replace your processor it will immediately void your warranty and leave you on your own if something happens to your notebook. Upgrading the ram is much more straightforward than changing a processor and doing so will not cause your warranty to become void.

Being that this is your first notebook I would advise you that if you don't know what you are doing (as in how to access the socket where the CPU and heatsink is located) then forget it. Even if you find the service manual for the 5050 series you still have to know what you are doing. If you still want to swap CPUs then perhaps you could find a computer shop near you that knows how to do this.

It's the first one I've attempted to open up, I also own a Dell Inspiron 1300.

I'm very experienced in desktop PC service and in somewhat knowledgeable in general electronics, I reckon I have enough skill to carry out this out so I sort-of know what I'm doing, I just need to know which parts and the order of which I need to to take them out.

I would prefer to do it myself so I'll be able to play with notebooks as well as desktop PCs in the future.

Do you know where I can find the service manual? I would love to see it.

    Thanks,
    DDY

Google is always the first thing I try but this time it didn't give me any answers.
