So let me start by saying I know nothing about computers, and don't trust myself to go off my own research. Knowing me, I'll fry my computer and tear a hole in the time-space continuum.
I have an old Sony Vaio VGN-FS742/W into which I had added a 1GB stick of RAM. Just bought an Acer 1410 this week, which came with a 2GB stick installed. But I'd love to add the 1GB stick from the Vaio into the Acer to bump it up to 3GB total.
Can anyone advise if the RAM modules are compatible?
Thanks.

According to crucial, yes they both have 200 pin sodimm, PC2-5300 DDR2,
but you make sure by checking here:

Thanks for the info. Running CPU-Z, it looks like my Vaio has 256MB and a 1GB stick. the 1GB is a PC2-4300 (266MHz) stick. The Acer has a 2GB PC2-5300 (333 MHz) stick.
I've read that running two RAM sticks of different speeds makes them both run at the speed of the slowest stick. Do you think my performance would be better by adding the 1GB from the Vaio to have 3GB RAM running at 266MHz, or just keep the 2GB already in the Acer running at the quicker 333MHz? -
Many experts recommend identical RAM from same manufacturer to get the full benefit, I am not sure how the speed loss will affect the performance, the extra 1GB RAM may compensate the speed difference. If I were you, I'll put the 1GB stick from Sony to Acer and see how it performs.
Use RAM from Sony Vaio in Acer Aspire?
