Use both cores in dual core Cpu?

Planing on upgrading my Aspire 5100 with a dualcore cpu,is there anyway of using both cores on software that is not specially written for it?

Edit: Does the ZM-85: 2300 MHz work to? It says S1 sockel.

 

doubt a ZM-85 will work, look for a S1G1(generation1) cpu.

 

Ok,do you think the cooling can manage a TL-68 2,4Ghz?

 

If software isn't multi-threaded (capable of using more than one core), then you can't split the work.
Thankfully, more and more programs are multi-threaded. And in the cases where they're still single-threaded, having a dual-core CPU means that you can multitask better.
Specs for the Aspire 5100 are here; looks like the Turion 64 X2 TL-50 would be the best shot as it's already listed, or at least something in the same family as the TL-50.

 

May be you could get TL-60 it is a bit faster and good. And they are same generation.

 

As far as using both cores, while individual single threaded programs cannot take advantage of both cores the OS will effectively use all cores to run both your software and all the background processes that are needed on the PC. You will still benefit, greatly, from getting a dual core CPU.

 

Just bought a TL-66 on ebay,read on another forum that it should work.

What version of the Aspire 5100 do you have? Don't you already have a dual-core? Or did you just buy a faster one?

 

No I have a single core 2Ghz.I read on another forum that this would work.

 

Hmm that is strange I have the Aspire 5100 but it has dual 1.7 cores. I think there is at least two models of the 5100 but I thought both had dual cores. It's interesting.

So it´s sold with both single and dual cores.

 

I see. It say 1.6 ghz, but mine is 1.7. AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor TK-53, where as it says it's a AMD Turion™ 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-50 Also it says windows xp, but mine came with windows vista. I guess it varies quite a bit. There are some other specs that are different to.

Oh and by the way, I think the TL-66 would work good. The main issue is the cooling since it's a more powerful processor, but since the 5100 has a decent cooling system (idles @ 50C) it should be fine.

 

I got my TL-66 dual 2,3Ghz,and it´s working,but it´s running a couple of degrees warmer...I could overclock it to 2,8Ghz then I got a blusescreen..
