I'm thinking of using the D: partition to keep personal data in a different place from all the software, to make it easier to back up only the personal stuff. However, the User directories, at least by default, are on C:, which kind of defeats the purpose.

Is there a way to have accounts use D:\Users\ instead of C:\Users\ ?

On XP you needed to use Power Tools (or was it Power Toys  ), on Vista it's much easier.
Open two explorer windows- one with where a certain account is located and other for the target location- just right click on the name of user and drag it to the new location- release the right click and paste.
    Logout and login again- done.

Just to close the loop on this: Simply moving the entire C:\Users\username folder to D:\Users did *not* work. I tried it both as the user in question and as a separate administrator. Some of the files therein, in particular some hidden and system files, want to stay there.

Instead, I believe the proper approach is to separately move C:\Users\username\Documents, Music, Pictures, and Videos to the desired location. The AppData folder, in particular, should stay on C:\. I moved the aforementioned items and have not yet had problems.

P.S. I found some relevant guidance at http://lifehacker.com/software/ask-...eparate-partition-in-windows-vista-257297.php

For me, when I tried to drag C:\Users\username the computer hung on a dialog
box about moving 200+ files. (Where the hell did they come from? All I did was create an account! I'm a Unix guy, so I find Windows Vista very opaque.)

Anyway, to move the individual folders mentioned above, instead of dragging them or cutting and pasting I right-clicked and edited Properties to change the Location. Perhaps I could have moved the user's entire folder in that manner.
