    Hello,

So last week at work I had to re-image 20 Dell notebooks. I installed Windows on one of them, made an image of that drive, and then used that image to install on the other 19. Worked like a charm.

    Basically what I did was:

    1. Insert Ghost 2003 CD
    2. Boot from CD
    3. Install USB 2.0 drivers
    4. Then used Ghost to make the image and store it on the external hard drive that was hooked up

Now, we just got an Acer Aspire 5520 from Best Buy the other night, way on clearance sale. I wanted to do this same thing to make an image of the disk, but it just doesn't seem to work. If I choose to load the USB 2.0 drivers, NOTHING happens, it just sits there on that screen. If I choose to load the USB 1.1 drivers, it seems like it does everything, but then the keyboard doesn't work for me to start the programs and stuff.

Please, can anyone help me? I want to make an image of this drive just the way it is, but then install my copy of Vista Ultimate on top of it.

Does anyone know, is this really the expected behavior of the Aspire 5520? For the USB drivers to not load?

Have you thought about doing a network transfer instead of USB 2.0 or 1.1?

Go make a network boot disk for windows - www.netbootdisk.com

Then map out a shared drive on your network and throw the ghost.exe file on it. Run ghost.exe and save the image as you would typically do so.

The issue is most likely sata drivers and or configuration is not current for ghost.

    Hope this helps.

I'm sorry, after reading this several times, and reading the link you sent me, I am afraid I do not even understand what it means. But from what I gather, I need a floppy drive, which I do not have. And I don't know what I would network to?

I'm srry Glenncoco I assumed that you knew more about pc's and networking than you actually do.

What this would allow you to do is run the program from the network share, and remove the need for USB 1.1.

    -------------------------

yes you need a floppy drive and or make the floppy into a bootable CD - http://www.netbootdisk.com/bootcd.htm

To put it simply in order to do this you need the following.

    1. Two computers with enough disk space
    2. A networked environment (duh)
    3. Create a shared folder on the pc that is NOT going to be imaged - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/301281
    4. Place the ghost.exe file on the shared folder that is NOT going to be imaged

    5. Take a floppy (usb or other wise) and follow the simple step by step directions. - http://www.netbootdisk.com/building.htm

    6. Start the PC with the floppy in the drive and let it boot.

    7. Enter the User Name / Password / Computer Share in the boxes ad prompted.

    8. In dos select the drive you mapped and you will see ghost.exe in that share. From here simply run ghost.exe and image the pc like you normally would.

    ------------------------------------------

If none of this makes sense then I'm out ideas for you and I'm talking over you (sorry).

I don't have a solution for you when it comes to usb 1.1 (this is one of the reasons why I don't frequent this forum any more.... the lack of communication). it's not you it's me :p

Basically what this is doing is mapping a network drive in DOS, navigating to the .exe, and saving the image on a remote pc (say server or otherwise).
