Is there some free software online I can use to see if my internal microphone is in working order? I know nothing at all about using a mic and I need to know (for definite reasons) if the one in my Acer 5000 works. Any step by step directions would be helpful.
    Thank you.

Easy and free: Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> Entertainment --> Sound Recorder. Go to Edit --> Audio Properties and then make sure it's your input device (it's most likely Realtek HD Audio Input), then hit the big red Record button and wail away :D

i remember i couldnt get the mic to work for a while. or that it was too soft. the option was hidden away under some menus.

if the mic is too soft i remember this is a check box to turn on some kind of "boost", that should do it. can't remember where tho.

Ah! under the Playback..its not in Record..which doesnt make sense..

Thank you very much for your replies. But I'm not sure that you understand that I have no clue here.

Do I need some program to test/use the mic with? I did the above that you wrote and there was nothing there to test a mic in "Properties". I'm looking for that big red Record button you mention. Do I need a program to test the mic?

    Thank you,

Sound Recorder was the program you were supposed to test the mic with. I've attached a picture that I guess might help. Press that button and then yell at your computer. I'm assuming you don't know where the mic hole is. I didn't know where mine was for the longest time because mine is just a hole under my LCD screen, something that's almost impossible to notice. Anyway, once you're done yelling, hit stop and play back to see if Sound Recorder has recorded anything in the mic. Be sure to Increase the Volume under the Effects Menu a couple of times if you first don't hear anything. Hope that helps more this time.

Thank you. I have found that my mic works. (Alotta feedback though.) I was checking because I plan to buy a gps program and it will have the capability to receive voice commands. Do you think that the mic on this 5002 will be good for this, or do I need an external mic?

I don't know what kinda voice commands you can give this program. Maybe "repeat instruction"? Do you have any idea?

    Thanks for your help.
