I've updated with Intel's latest drivers for Intel Wireless Pro 8945 ABG network connection. Still getting ping return of 200 ms compared to 0 ms for rest of devices on LAN.

Also please note that you will not have the same MS ping on wireless vs. wired, just isn't gonna happen.

since i don't have an INTEL WIFI card i can't guide you thru the steps...

my Atheros WIFI has settings that say "POWER SAVE MODE" and i turned that OFF since i never use my laptop on battery alone.

my advice is to look at the different settings and see if any seem to deal with power saving or power managment.. and try different settings

like SSX said you will never get a WIFI ping as low as the ping of a wired connection... that's just the way it is,, but 200ms is way too high IMO

I have an Acer 8920G on the same LAN, also wireless, and it responds to Pings in 0-1 ms

i guess i'll have to ping my router then ping my DSL modem... and see how much i loose between the 2,,, i've never had a desire to know until now!

but even that first WIFI hop i expect to take 1ms just to do the WPA test.

Yeah you're right the Ping to my router is usually <1ms, and all other devices are 1-3 ms, except for the Acer 7720 with Intel Wireless Pro 3945 ABG which pings at 200 ms.

The response from Acer Support is it must be software because I can surf the net with the 7720.

    LOL

it's either a POWER MANAGEMENT SETTING in windows thru the control pannel's POWER SETTINGS,,,, a setting of the INTEL DEVICE DRIVER which will have to be changed in the properties section of the dev mgr..... or if you have that EMPOWERING TECH software installed,, the setting could be changeable thru the E-POWER SETTINGS,, or the E-NET settings...

i guess nobody has this problem, or nobody has noticed....
so you may have to search around and see if you can come up with a solution.

i tend to think it's a software setting that is effecting the hardware... but your hardware is functioning JUST SLOWLY!

Well I looked up the Intel Wireless 4965 AGN (the one in my Aspire 8920 and installed in higher end Aspire 7720) and it's only $30, so I ordered one. Downloaded the latest drivers from Intel. Should be installed in a couple of days.

That should solve my hardware problems on home LAN. Now if I could only figure out how to get file sharing working between two Vista laptops over wireless connection, which is my original problem.

There are few threads regarding file sharing here. Try searching on Google, and some NBR threads might come up....

If you haven't figured how to file share between 2 vista computers heres how:

Open up windows explorer, and right click the drive/folder you want to share, then click the sharing tab, then click the share button, then click the share button again near the bottom of the box. Once this is done it will take you back, you can then set your permissions under advanced sharing.

You will then need to go to the network and sharing centre on both the computers, in the sharing and discovery box, make sure network discovery is turned on, then you will also need to make sure file sharing is on. Hopefully you can now file share between 2 computers. There is also an option for password protected sharing, if you turn this on, you will need to know the user login details for the computer you are trying to access.

I think you should be able to file share now, don't think i've left anything out!!!!!

    Thanks bangert,

I fidured it should be that simple too, but it doesn't work on Home Premium.

I'm wondering if upgrading to Ulimate would improve peer-to-peer networking ?

P.S. I changed the network card with no change in ping response, nor did it fix the browsing Public folder problem.
