    Hi all.

I have an Acer 5103 with AMD Turion X2 processor.

I have been trying to recover my Windows Vista via recovery cds. The computer does the recovery without problems however on restart I see the Vista boot screen and then the computer switches off. The same happens in safe mode also.

I also have a copy of Vista Ultimate which I tried to boot off. After the loading files and boot screen here, it goes to a bsod and I have no choice but to switch off.

I have noticed since day one in fact that the laptop seems to get quite hot could this be the problem. I also had a similar problem a few months ago where Vista just gave me a BSOD and after formats and trying to boot into the recovery CDs the BSOD would also come up. This was remidied by simply taking the hard drive out and putting it back in again! However surely I shouldn't need to do this to make a recovery work?

(Forgot to mention regarding the last paragraph, I tried installing Ubuntu then just to see if anything would work, it gave me a error which said Overtemp 75 if I recall before I got to the desktop on the CD)

I was using Ubuntu previously however I have been succesful in recovering Vista in the past on the same laptop after using Ubuntu so I have a feeling Ubuntu hasn't killed the computer.

The computer is a year old this month too. Is it a problem on the hardware side or am I missing something simple (it's happened before  )

    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Cheers

if it's LESS than a YEAR OLD.. get a service case started NOW

call acer and complain of intermittent lockups... and "BEEPING" (like heat warnings beep)

then when you send it in, send with a note explaining that you were doing a FACTORY RESTORE from the Disks you made... and the PC won't reboot!

send it to them and let them do a good cleaning of the FAN if they can't find any other problems, they should atleast reload the HDD and maybe test the MAINBOARD if you stress the HEAT ISSUE enough....

    Thanks for the info bigozone.

It is just in warrenty until the 14th.

However since I posted earlier, I have tried taking the hard drive out again like when this happened the other month and Vista has surpassed the boot screen and is now on the desktop.

Could this mean that my hard drive is failing? It has been the only component taken out on these two occasions and placed back in with everything just working as I expected it to again.

I still feel a lot of heat coming from the vents also. I have only had one laptop previously and it wasn't as warm. Is there any way to check the temperatures? Is this heat normal?

    Thanks again.

    Thanks for the link JC

Core 0 and 1 at idle is staying between 55 - 60 degrees with core 0 being slightly lower then core 1. Is this normal?

send it back to ACER... get the issue on record BEFORE the warranty runs out....
it's worth a week's loss of the PC if they find and fix a problem....
as for your current temps they are quite normal... but for a HDD to reach 75c is not right... it's very bad....

    i'd backup my data first...
then download a drive testing program. THIS PAGE has links to all major drive manufacturer's diagnostic tools as well as a multitude of other drive testing software.

KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON YOUR TEMPS

and report the issue to acer via phone or EMAIL (good for your records and proof of time issue started)

and if you have any further issues send it in for repair...
if it were mine, i'd stress the heck out of it.... running it days w/o shut down, sleep or anything...

try ORTHOS stress test.. often associated with RMClock and undervolting!
    search google!

better to find the problem now and get it fixed than to wait for it to die when it's outta warranty

Warm for a X2, drive temp is outrageous !
I'd file for repair while you can, before you endup with a paperweight.

    Hi all

    Thanks again for the help.

At the minute I'm re-recovering the OS after a reformat just as a double check.

I am later going to Tech Supplies (the agents for Acer in the channel isles) and see how it goes from there. If Vista is successful in booting, I'll show them the outputs from the temperature monitor and see what happens then. I'll reply later with regards to the outcome to this.

Also would just like to let you know that during Windows Update the core temps were at one point between the region of 80-90 degreees. This was when the updates were actually being installed.

    Thanks for the continued help.

80 to 90c temps for the CPU CORE are way outta line with the normal temps you see most users posting...

i never see a temp above 70c since upgrading to a CORE2DUO cpu,, no matter what type or how many programs i have running...

i did once see temps in the 80's when the fan was not functional due to an incompatibility in APCI when running XP, but after a BIOS upgrade the issue went away and the temps never hit that high even after hours running ORTHOS.

Just to say I have been to Tech Computers and they now have it for sending off to Acer.

Hopefully it should be back next week.

well atleast the problem is documented and you should get another 90 days of warranty

(i believe that is typical for depot repairs, i know they cover the same issue till the end of the current warranty or for 90 days if the current warranty expires in less than 90 days)
