If I have a aspire 5517 what models share this webcam and microphone with emachines or other acer models? looking at a 5100 cam about like the rectangle not punched in my 5517...Think it will fit? is the Mic intergated? doesnt look like it... but I've never taken apart the bezel. Think the motherboard had extra ribbon clips for the camera thou but not sure now that it is back together... http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu...ease=101319313

I don't recall seeing any place on the motherboard to plug in a webcam on my emachines e627, but there do seem to be variants of the 5517 (and e627) with webcams. If the webcam plugs into an internal usb port you might be able to solder it to one of the usb ports from the inside or to the usb lines in the mini PCI slot

Thanks JB, you helped me remember! was a little dumbfounded putting it back together as next to where the power button board goes there was an extra white 4, 5, 6 pin connector. So Im thinking yes...Now will a 5100 series webcam fit? yea no soldering for me, things have gotten to small for my taste or talent

I opened up my e627 again to take a look, there is no extra plug under the power button board :( . The exact model of mine is e627-5974

I was at Costco yesterday and checked out a 5517 they had on display. Their unit had a webcam installed and under device manager it was reported as a USB device. If you're feeling adventurous you could probably adapt a webcam from another model. I've looked at a few Acer and Gateway webcams available on ebay and they all look to be physically similar, except for the Acer units with a swivelling camera but even then I'd guess if you took the housing off the camera itself would look like any of the others.

    Good to know!
those Acer Crystal eye webcams like on the extenza 5230 are soooo nice! Wish I could upgrade to those I'll have to measure the rectangle, mic seems separate thou off to the left? weird that it would not be all one cabling...when I contacted a seller of the aspire 5100 he said mic was integrated but his pic only showed the rectangle and not the mic, plus it is not the crystal eye which is amazing in the low light department, thanks for the info!
ps. ever taken apart the bezel?

I took a closer look at some of the cams on ebay, particularly the ones that come with the cable included. It seems that the number of wires on the cables varies between 4 to 6 so trying a substitute will be more complicated than I originally thought. If you're going to try it I would suggest that you ask the seller to send you a close-up photo of the connector with the measurements so you could get an idea of whether it would fit into the plug on your computer.

I haven't taken the bezel apart on my emachines but I have taken them off several HPs. From the outside, the emachines looks no different. This is how the HP bezels came off: remove the rubber bumpers to expose the screws, remove all of the screws and then pry off the bezel -- use your fingernails and lift from the inside edge of the bezel working all the way around. I suggest you don't use any tools to pry off the bezel or you risk scratching the LCD.
