Hi guys.
Somebody can help to solve this question about VT on Acer laptops?
I recently bought a Acer 5720 laptop, but I'm very disappointed because this model BIOS don't give access to VT, and consequently 64 bit virtual machines too, and I need this feature to work.
I'm using VMWare, that I sure that works with 64bit OSes.
Please, if someone meet models specifications that have this feature enable by default I'll be thankful.

The processor should determine whether you have VT or not. I don't believe it is a feature that is turned off by the BIOS. What processor do you have?
-
Hello goof, thanks for reply buddy.
My notebook have a Core2 Duo T7300 (2.0GHz) processor, and the Intel's website says that it have VT support.
This is the link, and so click in "View laptop processor specifications":
http://www.intel.com/products/processor/core2duo/specifications.htm?iid=prod_core2duo+tab_spec
The Intel G965 chipset also have VT support, but I think Acer don't enable both DEP and VT in my 5720-6124 notebook.
Thanks so much.

Did you try this utility?
http://download3.vmware.com/software/wkst/VMware-guest64check-6.0.0-45731.exe
it should tell you whether it is disabled in the BIOS or not. I hope it is not, I'm expecting my T7400 next week and want to run x64 in VMware as well. -
Hi guy.
I tried the utility that you indicates in last post, and it says that my notebook is capable to run 64 bits Virtual Machines.
My problem is in VMWare, because this says that I need enable VT in BIOS, but my BIOS don't give me this option.
I think that only a future BIOS update can solve the problem, for me and others, and I hope in this.
Thanks for help buddy.
See you.

Hello everybody
I get this links in VMWare's site:
http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/documentLink.do?externalID=1952
http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/documentLink.do?externalID=1901
This links said that notebook BIOS may have VT enabled.
I'm waiting for Acer put VT enabled in their future BIOS releases.
Thx,

Good luck, I hear they aren't going to bother with it.
-
well I guess acer will lose costomers in the future.
-
I agree totally with you...
Not only in the future, but present too...
For me "Acer never more"...

I have a T7400 and cannot run 64bit OS in VMWare due to lack of BIOS support. -
Yes, the problem is the BIOS...
See my notebook specifications below (Centrino Santa Rosa):
Core2 Duo T7300
Chipset GM965
Intel Wireless Pro 3945 A/B/G
VGA X3100
2GB RAM DDR2 667
HD 160GB
The BIOS don't have options to enable VT and this feature is disabled by default (last BIOS version v1.34 enable Disable-bit, but VT not).

My Aspire 5920G has VT enabled (T7300). No option in BIOS, but it is enabled (Xen works).
-
-
5620 here with the 7300 core 2 duo. It has VT.
-
Here 32 bit VMs works fine with VMWare, but 64 no.
Please, make test trying run 64 bit VMs using Xen in our Aspire.
Thx

I suggest you download a trial version of XP Professional 64-bit on technet site to make test with.
The only 64 bit Linux version that I know is Ubuntu 7.10 for AMD processor, is this the version are you using?
If not, what is the version and where can I download it.

I tried Ubuntu 7.10 x64, 8.04 x64, and Debian testing (x64). They all work.
-
I hope Acer enable VT options in next BIOS releases, or give-us a option to change it.
Good luck for us (that have Acer and Core2 Duo, but not VT).
You're lucky because in your notebook VT works.

That is strange... same laptop, same CPU, same chipset.
What BIOS version are you using?
The European site seems to have the newest BIOS (3811 from my memory). I bought mine in Taiwan but flashed the European BIOS with no problem. -
Its not same laptop, I have 5720-6124
My BIOS version is the last (1.34) and i got it in European site too.
I'm waiting for solution.

Vt is just hardware asstied virtual machine it shound have nothing to do with be able to run 64 bit os if you cpu is 64 bit you be able to
what virtaul machine software you runing -
I tried VMWare, last 2 versions. Haven't tried Microsoft Virtual PC however. I can run 64bit OS, but not in a virtual machine.
-
I Have the same problem.
My notebook is running Vista Ultimate 64bits, but it can't run 64 bits guests in VMWare (version 6.0.3.80004).
I think we need send massive e-mails to Acer support, perhaps in this way they solve the problems of thousands of customers (dissatisfied and nervous).
For me, ACER NEVER MORE!!!

Hello guys,
I recent found this forum about VT on notebooks.
Sorry about my little english.
I was learned so far with this threads.
So, is there a way to know by advance wich notebook has VT support?
VT support for XEN, or VMWare has to do with not only the CPU, wich Intel´s site is a good source to see if CPU support VT. Almost news CPU does.
But Motherboard, thru BIOS has to support VT also, like "whit3h4t" said.
And for thoose guys that can successfully install XEN, or VMWare on thoose notebook with full VT support, wich soft or util do You all need to switch from one OS to another, while in virtualization mode? I mean, did You all need a second additional hardware (PC, or another notebook) to perform the task i´m asking?
Thanks in advance for the reply.

Anyone know if this has been enabled on the Acer Aspire 5720?
-

Sorry can you provide anymore info on this? Which thread?
-
Timeline's 3810 have VT enabled in the latest BIOS 1.14
-
Last year I bought Acers flagship DTR the 9813 this laptop was good for my needs in that I could bring Virtual Machines home and work on them. I have since upgraded the OS to Win 7 Ent 64, this means I can no longer run ANY VM on my laptop due to the BIOS setting for VT not being present and VT disabled as default. I have contacted Acer asking them to release a BIOS that allows me to use all the features on the laptop, after various support calls with inept customer support people.
I have decided to take Acer to the small claims court (I'm in the UK) for the price of their current flagship laptop the Aspire 8935, if Acer don't contest I get what I paid for (eventually).
I suggest that everyone do the same and force Acer (and Sony) to give us the product we purchased and not some chipset nobbled equivalent. -
I just got a reply from Acer UK to a 'which models support VT' and got pretty much a proforma reply with a few little gems such as
"For all Acer products currently shipping and planned we advise that you visit www.acer.co.uk for full information on our products, warranties and where to buy. In addition there are large amounts of information on many non Acer sites and a quick web search could well find you the information you are looking for.
Very informative that was
>We are confident that you will be satisfied with your Acer product and if
<snip> or our pre sales enquiry desk on 0870 853 1005.
Yup, tried that, can't tell me, they don't know - to paraphrase: "we're not the manufacturer, we're a support company, the manufacturer doesn't tell us anything"
So I guess I'm back looking at Toshibas (unless I can get an answer from the US bunch...) -
Well, what did you expect from Acer??
-
Hi All,
Just FYI, I purchased a 1410 - 2285.
Its a CULV Celeron SU2300. It *might* come with Intel VT enabled by default.
I say might because I had problems loading the kvm_intel modules in Fedora 12 Beta , as well as Ubuntu 9.10 i386.
After that I updated the BIOS to v *something 120.
I can now run Virtualbox with VT support, as well as load the kvm_intel modules on Ubuntu 9.10 x86_64.
So go figure -
I can confirm that VT is enabled in AS1410 SU2300 ........ did not need a BIOS update here
-
That's good to hear but my Acer 5720 needs an update, my CPU has it I've confirmed it on the Intel website. I just need to turn it ON!
-
Why can't they just enable it. What do they gain from not allowing us to enable it? Seriously, do we have a case to sue them or what?
-
other than that I would think not...It translates to added tech support that they do not want to deal with.
I wonder if my 5230(t7500) or 5517(amd58) will do VT? I replaced the Celery with t7500 in my 5230... At boot it says no microcode update found for alternate processor but other than that I can see both cores and works fast!
What Acer laptop models have Intel Virtualization Technology(ies) (VT) enabled?
