I’ve been reading some of the threads on here and this is what I think!
What is the big deal about the screen resolution in the US! Here in the UK we can pitch up a 1920x1080 screen easy. They even had it on display in my local pc world! I am seriously thinking about getting the 6920, below specification! What do people think about their 6920's / 8920's.
I dont know if this is just me or is there something weird about the Acer forum. Ive just come from Sony forum and there is loads going on saying how good there sonys are! There should be some more respect going on for these Acer’s, as they are good machines! As soon as I open up the Acer forum BANG, there is a thread about Acer’s poor build quality ! Not good for anybody thinking about getting an Acer! But I let you have it the Acer 6920's are built a hell of a lot better than the Sony Vaio FW’s.
This is a matter of fact as I have just taken back the below specification FW, minus the Scorpio Black drive. This is because of the build quality and dead pixel on it.
Quality issues include: screen defect, bluray drive comes out at an angle then scrapes across the desk, palm rest gives significantly under very little pressure, only a few rubber protection pads round the screen, and finally the paint work and casing feels like it will scratch very easily. Just very poor from Sony not what I expected, and what u Yanks say, not much bang for your buck! Compared to the Acer is has so much more to offer inc the 1080P screen!
I might think about making a decent 6920's / 8920's owners thread, as there is just not much people talking about their Acers for some reason. Just a bit sad really! People should be pleased about their purchase!
The only small problem with the 6920's / 8920's is that there is some give on the keyboard, which isn’t really a big deal. What I want to know is how is the fan noise on these machines? Just that in some reviews with the bigger GPU the fan runs constantly ? Can anybody comment on this?

I have got that model you suggest, and I only hear the fan noise when playing games, normally when surfing or using MSN I don't hear it at all. The noise isn't loud either (well atleast for me it's not annoying)
Though what I don't like is that the left part of the palm-rest, left of the touchpad, gets pretty hot when playing a game, so when I play a FPS my hand gets sweaty.
Though that makes the bottom of the laptop less hot so I practically never feel any heat on my lap. And overall this is a very good laptop, very much bang for buck (especially the screen+bluray works awesome) and I would recommend it
So I don't know if it's only me with this model where the GPU fan doesn't always run, but you have to see for yourself. -
At the moment I am stuck between the Dell Studio 15 and the Acer 6920, So
about which one to get! The Dell does not come with a keyboard as nice as the Acer’s for typing on, but it is LED back lit. The Studio also comes with a Led backlit screen up to 300 candela’s.
It is good to know that the 6920 doesn’t have to much fan noise. If I was going to get the Dell because it is cheaper, I would be able to get a 22” screen to output to while I’m at home! Does anybody have any thoughts of what I can do, consisting that I am going to be a student and will need a decent unit to both type on, and watch films/music ect?
To me the Acer seems a lot more fun than the boring Dell, but you cannot get that extra screen? If somebody could helpI will also need this notebook to last three years!

Get the Acer. I work at Staples and have played around with alot of laptops including the Studio, and it just feels and looks cheap. I own a 6920 and am completely in love with the thing. Get the Acer and then look around on Ebay for a LCD. I got a almost new 19'' Westinghouse 1680x1050 for less the 40 USD.

I just got my Acer Aspire 8920-6961 this morning, and it is fantastic, I originallly wanted a black MacBook but for $400 I got way better specs and a huge 18.4" screen.
When I went to Micro Center this morning to buy my Acer they had it side by side with the 6920 which was out of stock, they are both beautiful machines. -
Seeing so many people happy with their Gemstone Blues makes me feel better too, despite the facts that i've got some problems with it.

Well, were. But the new screen (dead pixel problem, replaced) is having also a problem, a small one but still, a problem (a fingerprint like one, that's visible when viewing from some angles).
Overall, i'm pleased with it. If I'll get the change to chose again, i would still chose it. I guess. -
It's my first notebook and I feel this one is well balanced. Everything works fine on mine, except for the overheating gcard problem. Maybe you should buy a cooling fan if you plan to play demanding 3d games. But keep in mind that acer costumer service is very bad. And as cqstleush mentionned, ask for their dead pixel policies, in case you get some too.

I have a 6920-6021. Great machine, I just don't like how the fan is directed at The LCD. Kinda big, wish it were 15.4". Don't normally hear the fan unless playing games, and boy my laptop ran quit coolly playing COD4 a few minutes ago (I normally feel the heat under my left hand but I barely noticed it this time). Can play any game and do anything I throw at it except go to work for me.
-
Quite pleased with my system - if only it didn't have such a propensity to overheat.
-
is the over heating with only the 6920 model? or does the 8920 have it too?
-
Pretty sure it's just mine.

Hi Guys,
I have an Acer 6920 and have been quite dissapointed so far. It has 4GB of RAM so the first thing I did was format the HDD and install Vista x64. I downloaded all the drivers from the acer support site.
After a few weeks of having it the screen went blank, as if there is no power (its not the backlight either). The only thing I could do is to hard reset it. When it turns on again the screen remains blank/powerless. I then need to leave it 10mins to perhaps cool down? before it will turn on again!
I uninstalled the NVidia driver that they gave me and the generic driver works fine (dispite the fan underneith towards the top (screen) left always being on after about 3 mins).
I contacted Acer support and they said "We dont support x64 bit"... strange. If they dont then why provided x64 bit drivers? If they dont why sell laptops with 4GB of RAM so you cant use all of it!?? I asked these questions and got no answer for the 1st question and "There is a fix out from Vista SP 1 that enables 32bit to see the 4GB RAM".. I know there is but this is to SEE and not fully address the whole memory space... grr!!
I emailed them on their website around a week ago and still waiting reply. I contacted NVidia (very fast, and decent support) who said the NVidia card looks like its overheating!
Hopefully Acer will replace it oneday!! (fingers crossed). I am traveling for a month in two weeks, so am hoping it will hold on with the Generic driver... I dont want to risk giving it to support and not getting it back in time.. that was the reason for buying it in the first place!
The other moan I want to share is with the level of service I received from AcerDirect.co.uk. I buy a decent £1000 laptop and pay extra to get the full 1080p screen. Just after the purchase I get a call "do you want to give us £40 to ensure you have no dead pixcels?" and "we will also install all your software". I told here I was going to format the HDD so to ensure NO software is installed and no i dont want to bloody pay £40 for a quality check that they should have performed!!! Absolutly shocking.
I got the laptop with no dead pixcels (phew) and all the software installed... grrr muppets. I think that was just another con! They must just write an Image to the disk with the software so she must have been lieing.
I hope this helps some one!?
o and TehSuigi you suffering from overheating as well? Is it the same issue I am facing? Perhaps its a laptop design issue? -
I don't like the 6920g keyboard it is spongy and in Canada we are stuck with the multi lingual. I am a multi lingual person and I hate this layout.
I don't like the split spacebar.
The media controls need to be smaller.
The keyboard should be close to center.
Why does the Wi-Fi light always blink? -
David - the whole "not supporting 64-bit" line smells like BS to me, because Acer Canada sells systems that come configured with 64-bit Vista Home Premium! Call then back and escalate, escalate, escalate!
And it's not so much overheating as bad cooling design - the little mesh screen in front of the cooling fan can get clogged with dust and crud all too easily. Plus, I do push my little T5550 quite a bit.
Lewdvig - the keyboard certainly does take some getting used to. Mine has a tendency to drop the occasional letter...that, and my favourite Shift key got shrunk.
You can always force the keyboard to US using the Language settings and removing the Canadian settings. -
I use US multilingual - its the only way to get the right characters on screen when I type. Yeah my fave shift key is the left one too.
My first 3dmark06 run was 3758 using xp64 and 177.92 drivers. That is better than my M-6864FX for $200 less, with a slower CPU.
THe Acer also has a bunch of features the Gateway didn't - Bluetooth, Dolby, much better screen.
I'll live with the keyboard - but maybe I can eBay a US one. -
you should be able to get a replacement US keyboard pretty easily for that model... if not yet available, they should be available everywhere soon..
-
I hope so. That would make my day.
