    Hey,

    I am wondering what would be the best upgrade for me...

    i currently have the Acer Aspire 8930G 584G32Bn - my processor is Intel core2 duo T5800 (2.0 GHz, 800MHz FSB, 2 MB L2 cache) - running Windows 7 x64 (bought this so it is a 'vanilla' (clean) install - didn't come pre-loaded on laptop

    i am wanting a performance boost (currently getting this by using a program called throttle stop)

    i know there are different Intel processors such as the Q900 and Extreme... if anyone could guide me as to the best solution for me i would really appreciate it!

    what is the best possible processor for my system? and what would you reccomend??

    thanks in advance!

    It really depends on your cooling system since the 8930G can support quad cores. I'm not sure if they gimped the cooling system for the dual core version but you should be able to use a QX9300 if you feel like paying for it. Take a look in the NBR Marketplace since many people are selling quad cores in there.

    Not all iterations of the 8930g can handle quad-core processors. This was highlighted in the main 8930g thread here. Not sure which versions do work with quad-core as it appeared to be a bit of a hit-and-miss process.

    However, I had a T5800 just like yours and upgraded to a X9100 which gave me a significant boost in performance. It took about 10 minutes to install and has given me no problems whatsoever.

    Hope this helps!

    if it helps...

    also did you have a significant temperature increase when moving upto the X9100?

    thanks

    I have recently found out that the x9100 and the T9900 are set at the same speed but the x9100 has over-clocking cap.

    which would you recommend i choose or do you recommend a different processor? or maybe is thee a quad that would fit?

    thanks... nath

    I undervolted my X9100 which actually made it run cooler than my old T6600. Chances are if your 8930G came with a dual core, especially an older dual core, it wont accept a quad core.

    If you go for an X9100 you'll notice around a 50% increase in performance right from the start. 1066Mhz FSB vs the T5800's 800Mhz, also 6MB L2 vs 2MB L2, and a full 1060MHz faster clock speed. It'll also boost the performance of your RAM due to the old processors limited FSB. Don't get an ES X9100. Look for one that has the revised E0 stepping, it tends to, in most cases, be more stable and throws out less heat.

    If you're not concerned about overclocking, you could go for the T9900, although I'm yet to find one cheaper than an X9100.

    whats the differences with the stepping... the OEM version (original intel) seems to have a higher temp or so i hear... where as the E0 (enginiering version) seems to have a revised lower temp reading... but i dont understand why the OEM is more expensive?

    what do you mean in overclocking cap on the x9100?
    its multiplier is unlock so you can set it to what you like, most cpu`s that is locked

    Please refrain from cross-posting in the future; this discussion should have been continued in the 8930G Owner's Lounge or the T5800 vs. X9100, where you have also asked these questions.

    I meant to say the T9900 is clock capped and the x9100 is uncapped... Sorry

    yes I overclocked my Nvidia 9700M GT

    @625MHz core clock
    @1576MHz shader clock
    @800MHz memory clock

    tool : EVGA PRECISION or Nvidia Performance Tool

    id like to add, i overclocked my 9600m gt to
    @650mhz core clock
    @1700mhz shader clock
    @820mhz memory clock

    my temps max out at 85 degress being stress tested. and thats with crappy thermal paste.

    the 9700m gt is basically a higher clocked 9600m gt.

    ive overclocked my 9600m gt past the stock clocks of the 9700m gt
