Pretty confused by the billion sockets out there....can I get an idea of the best bang for buck/cool running currently popular CPU upgrade for this notebook? Much appreciated! Nothing super expensive, just the best bang for buck 60-80 Ebay type cpu would be good.

    T5250, T5450, T5550, T7100, T7300

the T7300 has 4mb of L2 cache while the others only have 2mb L2 cache

more people have used the T5450 than the other CPUs just because it seems to be easier to find than the other T5xxx cpus...

GOTTA BE A SOCKET P CPU....
and DO NOT BUY ENGINEERING SAMPLE CPUS... they have been abused

Sweet, thanks for the quick reply. While you here ;) - is the 5315 much of an improvement over the 4315? What other upgrades apart from more ram are a good idea for the 4315? Cheers for any help.

if you are running VISTA the best performace gain you can get is to switch to XP...

if you don't have one a GOOD DVD burner is nice to have
internal Blue Tooth moudules are a popular upgrade
and the new ATHEROS AR5008 WIFI adapter has great speed when paired w/ a Dlink 655 router

but if i were happy w/ my burner and wifi... i'd sink all my cash into a T8100 or T8300 CPU...

much better than the T5450 or any T5xxx series CPUs

Yeah, just XP. Those T8100/T8300 have a 800Mhz bus...won't that be a problem?

nope.... the i965 supports 800Mhz FSB for CPUs... but the i965 chipset limits RAM speed to 667Mhz..

trust me... we have alot of info on this...

THE ONLY PROBLEM THAT MIGHT ARISE WOULD BE BIOS SUPPORT FOR THE CPUs...

i know the 4315s support the T5xxx series.. but i have not done any research into the BIOS support for T7xxx and T8xxx cpus... so i won't promise you anything... but i'd bet that you wouldn't run into any problems...

i just can't verify it... where as i can verify T5750 and lower work because i've had reports from reliable sources...

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=275452
this guy has a T9500 cpu in a 5315 (same chipset,,, but different BIOS)... we still can't verify the heat issue and what caused it and what solved it... all he did was a clean install.... (i try to be very conservative with my reporting of what WILL work...)

Nice, well I'm bidding on a T8100 so if I win I will post back and try to be a reliable source of info on whether it works or not ;)

Kinda wondering how the 5315 is different from the 4315 aside from the screen size...

I won the T8100 - $200 NZ or about $145 USD which seemed pretty good. I'll have it in a day or two and shall endeavour to install it - it will be in a 5315 though as I went for the bigger screen in the end. Also have another 2BG of Kingston PC5300 coming for it, so total 2.5GB should be good.

What bios should I be using for the 5315 and the T8100 CPU?
