I have the Aspire 5100 64 bit. I have tried XP, XP-64, Vista, and Vista-64. I don't like vista first off because its a memory pig, and seems to run a little slower. XP is fine, couldnt tell much difference between it and XP-64, other than the lack of support for the 64 version. Just wondering what all you out there with 64-bit processors run on your machines. What's the common preference?

I ran XP's 32bit and 64bit and Vista's 32bit and 64bit. XP 32bit was too old in my opinion so i switched to Vista64. Had a very bad experience in Vista 64bit and moved to XP x64, which i feel is the best 64bit OS (if there are good driver support). But i paid for my Vista, so i have to use it, and poof, i am with Vista 32. Compatibility problems with 64bit keeps me away from the OS.

If you have 4GB RAM, you need a 64-bit OS. At today's RAM prices 4GB is a very tempting possibility.
I've been running 64-bit Linux for years, though generally not on my notebooks. I don't know what the problem is for Windows. -
I run no 64 bit applications presently; all are x86 (32 bit). I find, however, that my performance is about 10-15% better with the 64 bit and its nice to have the additional ram recognized.
After all the problems getting be bit to run effectively and complete in laptops, its now nice to say I wouldn't switch back.
Also, I have found very little compatibility issues. -
If I could for sure get 64 bit drivers for my notebook from acer, I would just put 64 bit Vista on it... but acer is soooo slow at upgrading, they won't even NTFS... or 64 XP, or anything new...

i have to say i want to use 64-bit windows on my laptop but the software support from acer is a little lacking to say the least; in fact i dont recall and acer unit with vista 64 installed on them.

As long as there is a 64bit driver for the device, there is no need to bother wether if Acer supports/supply 64bit items or not. Google is your friend
.

i can find all the drivers i want for a my system; its just that they dont provide any software such as the power management software etc
-
Third party power management software such as RMClock will be able to handle it. They are also 64bit compatible.

Hi there!
I'm having some bad moments with XP64 too!
My Aspire 5102WLMi with 4gb RAM is crashing with some drivers. When I put any card on card reader, usually XP x64 crash and here comes the Blue Screen!
Other things like Orbicam driver and Empowering Technology has lots of bugs on XP x64 and doesn't work.
I tried to find the exact specification for all internal hardware and then google it to get the right drivers, but no lucky!
And yes...Acer is too slow to update drivers!
What do you run on your 64-bit processor?
