    Hi

I'm in the market for a new laptop and had my mind set on a Acer Aspire 6935G.

However today I spotted an Acer Aspire 6935 at a cheaper price which seems to have identical technical specs apart from a slower Hard Drive - 5,400rpm versus 7,200rpm.

I know that the G stands for Gemstone but from the pic available on the retailer's website its difficult to see any significant difference.

Can anyone tell me if there are any other differences between the 2 models? Or - is it purely a matter of cosmetics ? Are the cosmetic differences minor ?

Also - would there be any noticeable difference in performance between a 5,400 rpm HD and a 7,200 rpm HD if the processor and the graphics card are the same ?

I will be using the laptop for general purposes and occasional gaming.

Many thanks in advance for help !!

they are both part of the "gemstone" series, cosmetically, they should be identical
the G means its the higher-end model (might have a dedicated graphics card)

    Hi,

You provide us links to both laptops we could compare them better.

The G usually stand for a model with a dedicated graphic card which is important if you plan to do some gaming.
The 5400 vs 7200 is noticeable IMO.

Again, links to full specification would be nice.

    Hi again

Sorry for not giving links - I should have done so.

    The 6935 is here for £729.99 : http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/89031...ta-Home-Premium-Laptop-Notebook/Product.html#

    The 6935G is here for £749.99 : http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/67360...sta-Home-Premium-Laptop-Notebook/Product.html

The graphics card and the processor seem to be identical. The size of Hard Drive is also the same.

The only difference I could spot was the different HD speeds.

If there are no other differences, is the faster HD speed worth an extra £20 ?

As I'm a "silver surfer" with limited computer knowledge, advice from members of the forum who are more expert would be greatly appreciated .

I find it strange that the only difference between the two is a faster HD .

At first i thought the RAM and VRAM would be different .

One with DDR2 and the other with DDR3 maybe , but since it's not mentioned on the site and the price difference is only £ 20 i think it's very unlikely .

If it was my money i'd go for the faster HD .

    Sawaddi Krap (Hi !!)

Yes ......it does seem strange ......and I think you are right .....best to be on the safe side and pay a little more for the one with the faster HD ....the difference is so small.

To be honest the one I'd really like is yours with the 2.53GHz processor but it is £310 more expensive from the same retailer and no matter how much I try I can't justify it to myself !!

Kop khun mak krap !! (thank you very much)

PS> I lived in Thailand for about 20 years - a great country but the politics is crazy just now !!

huh i always thought that some sites just left out the G and that they're all the same model just different specs.

I got the 2.53ghz model for £850 including shipping from either comet or pc world's site but its not there no more. Im sure if you keep looking you can get one round the same price.

Wow ....£850 is a fantastic price for the 2.53 GHz one !!

What's your opinion of it .....is it really good and worth the extra cost over the 2.26GHz model ?

Well i never used the 2.26ghz one but my old laptop was 1.6ghz. Pretty useful since im encoding video every week and its quite fast. Hated vista on my last laptop but on this is smooth and fast and loving it.

Not noticing improvment with the 7200rpm from 5400rpm HDD though. Sometimes it seems to be bottlenecking when creating big file which my old one didn't but for most people that will never happen.

1900x1080 makes everything sharp but desktop icons quite small unless you change the DPI setting in vista. XP doesnt have that but i'm never using XP so its ok and its still not soo small its unusable. Need to zoom in one webpages though sometimes but firefox remembers the zoom you have each page on so its all good.

It was definity worth the extra money, not sure if it be worth £300 more specially if you don't use programs that will use that extra bit of cpu speed. For games the 2.26ghz would be enough most likely but im not really a big modern gamer. and the 1366 x 768 is good enough too since I set most of my games to 1280x720. The high resolutions won't show too much difference on a 16" screen imo.

Thanks for info .....wish I could afford the 2.53GHz model but from what you say plus the reviews I've read the 2.26GHz model will serve me well.

I will pay the extra £20 to get the faster 7,200rpm Hard Drive but most likely I will not notice a faster speed.

    Bye for now !!

    Sawadee Khrap JJ ,

i think you will be very happy with the £ 750 model .

The CPU is more then powerful enough for general purposes and the GPU is the same is mine and i can play almost all the latest games very smoothly and on high settings .

So you lived here for 20 years ? That's awesome !

I would love to live here but sadly i'm only here on vacation .

I'm half Thai myself and normally live in Belgium .

But hey , i've been here every year for the last 6 years so i cant complain :D

And yeah Thailand is heaven on earth , even with all the crazy stuff going on lately . But the worst is over now ( at least i hope so ) , and everything is getting back to normal , by Thai standards of course :D
