    Hi there,

    I am using an Acer Aspire 5920G with a 2.0GHz T5750 processor

Which is the best upgrade I can get?

    Is the E8400/E8500 compatible?

    Thanks,

    Michael

According to Acer, the 5920G uses Intel's GM965 mobile chipset, which supports Merom processors and the 800mhz FSB. The T7800 would be your best possible upgrade.

The e8400 and e8500 are Desktop processors with different cores and socket types and would not be compatible.

None of the processors you listed will work as they are desktop processors, the 5920g is a socket p.

If you have a look at this thread, it is the CPU compatibility guide, scroll down a bit and it will tell you what cpu's are a socket P, I'm not sure that everyone on the list would work, so have a look, see what you would like to upgrade to then post back to see if it would work.

I myself upgraded my 5920 to the T7500 without any issues, works like a charm.

    Thanks for your replies :D

    I'm thinking the T7800, 2.6GHz.

Will I see a lot of improvement in performance?

    Thanks,

    Michael

If you really have a GM965 you should be able to get a Penryn CPU. I would recommend the T8300 or the T9300. Far less power, and better performance clock per clock than the Merom.

Basing my recommendations off of upgrading my M-6862 from a T5750 to a T8300. :)

Yes indeed, forgot about that! Just make sure the one you get has the 800mhz FSB, the 1066mhz won't be supported on your chipset. The T9500 would then be the best choice :D

What's the difference between the T8700 and the T9500, cos they are both 2.6GHz.

The T9500 will give you better battery life since it uses less power, and more performance clock for clock, and the extra 2MB of on-die cache (6MB for the T9500 vs 4MB for the T7800) will increase responsiveness.

You can also save some $$ by getting the T9300 instead, that's the 2.5Ghz version, otherwise it's the same chip, 6MB cache, 800mhz FSB.

Cost/performance wise you are much better off getting the T9300 than the T9500.
